It makes perfect sense.

One of the biggest selling points of the NFL are that ALL of its games are an EVENT.
It's great marketing.

To answer your question look no further to Winnipeg that sold out EVERY game, for a metropolitan population of 750,000. Quebec City would love a hockey team since it has a population size similar to Winnipeg and the NHL was discussing perhaps a 2nd team in the Montreal area.

Wang has made it clear that he wants to go to any place with a Modern / New Facility so Quebec City with its new area would be an ideal choice, Kansas City is Wangs current alternative, seattle is probably going to be where the Coyotes will go as it will create a rivalry with neighborly Vancouver. Las Vegas has also come up numerous times as a possible NHL location since neither the MLB, NBA, NFL or NHL has a team there and it could be a huge gamble and an even bigger payoff for the NHL to plant a flag in the desert. October, April and May would be very difficult but if they can make it work in Florida, Vegas shouldn't be a problem/

I partialy disagree---and will say that it has to do with the product put out on the ice. The real trouble for the Islanders is that they are in perhaps the strongest division in the NHL---the other teams are the Rangers, Flyers, Devils, and Penguins.

Also, unless the Nets improves, I would think they'd need another team there to pull in the revenue. Who's going to want to go to a Nets game if they still suck?

I doubt Nassau will spend tax dollars for a stadium, so it doesn't look like the Islanders are staying there. But if fans don't want to go to Brooklyn, would they rather see them go to Canada instead?

I'd hate to seem them go, as they are a uniquely Long Island team. In Brooklyn, they are just ANOTHER NYC team. The Devils are also a NY metro team. How many locations have three hockey teams? Hockey isn't even hugely popular to support so many teams. At least as it is now, it's a "Long Island" team. To have the Rangers in Manhattan, and the Islanders a stone throw away in Brooklyn, with the Devils also so nearby is almost absurd.

The recent measure where voters were given the choice to support or deny the funding of the new arena and they voted no. So what makes you think they'll change on that stance?

So by that thinking, it's Nassau or elsewhere (non NY). Imo, if I cared about the Islanders, even Brooklyn would be better than Canada or some place else if they can't stay in Nassau.

Ok, but unless the owner builds the new arena from his own pockets, I still doubt Nassau is going to approve any plans that requires a few hundred million dollars from taxpayers to fund it. This is the same Nassau that flipped off the MTA over 10s of millions they owed to the MTA to run LIB, which lead to NICE.

So I have my doubts about the Islanders coming to terms to get that new stadium in Nassau.

So let's say hypothetically IF the Islanders were to leave Nassau would you rathey they:
A) move to Brooklyn (though inconvenient, is a train ride away or even a drive thru a very congested Flatbush Av).
B) move outside NY State and possibly to Canada.

The only thing that makes the islanders unique is that it's auniquely long island team. As a new york city team it won't do as well. It's already lost a lot of interest

Islanders haven't been relevant for years finishing either last or near the bottom in the standings. Maybe if they were doing good, and the Rangers or Devils were doing poorly, then there could be some more interest in keeping the Islanders here.

Also what makes you so sure the majority of Islanders fans would be so against taking the train vs driving? What's the harm in letting the Islanders play in Brooklyn for a year and see if it works out or not? If it fails then let Canada take them. Charles Wang owns the team, so it is his call on what to do with them.

?????

And that's the point, it's Charles Wang's team. How is it any worse for me to say it wouldn't work well in Brooklyn than for you to say "let them go there it's Charle's Wang's call". It's his call either way, so that's not any more of a reason against my position than it's for your position.

And I agree with the article. The Islanders have an eroded fan base as it is, because of how they play, they won't be increasing it in Brooklyn in the current state any more than if they stayed where they are....in fact they would probably lose more than they gain with that move, as why would a "ranger fan" become an Islander fan, just because they are "in Brooklyn"....especially with the way they have been playing?

If they are fans they'll get used to it. Look at all the CT and Westchester residents who take the train to Yankee Stadium.

What baseball team would they be following if not for the Yankees? IN NYC there's two others, all nearby.

What is so funny is that the contract between the NHL and the Islanders states that they must play on Long Island. "Long Island" was not defined in the contract to be "Nassau and Suffolk Counties" which is what most people consider to be Long Island. As a result they can move to Brooklyn and still not violate their NHL contract.

How convenient that they are finding asbestos in the Coliseum now and the Islanders could use that fact to get out of playing games their, citing "unsafe work environment".
