An example of bad LI pizza is "Borrelli's" by the Nassau Coliseum.

Exactly! That's the kind of stuff they try and pass off as "NY Pizza" in places like California.

You were right about the "Amish" in Sarasota, they are really Mennonites.

That's what I figured. Mennonites are pretty Orthodox in religion, but unlike the Amish, they can drive cars, use electricity, machinery, etc, which is taboo for Amish. They don't drink either.
Maasbach's Restaurant, over by the Fresh Pond Rd station in Ridgewood by 68th Ave used to be run by Mennonites. They didn't serve alcohol in there. The food was sort of like a diner would be.

Actually I've never had any pizza in California that called itself "NY Pizza" or anything similar that I can recall. I have seen many of them around, but I don't eat there because I never liked the NY pizza that I ate in NY. And I really don't understand why this rule seemingly applies only to pizza, but there's lots I don't understand so I can live with it.

I have had excellent Indonesian food in Amsterdam too. There is NOTHING that I have found like it anywhere here.

AWESOME! I thought I was the only one with Amsterdam-originated Indonesian cravings and the dearth of offerings of it in America.

They should give special visas to Indonesian people who promise to start quality restaurants in the US. Obama spent some of his childhood in Indonesia. He would know. I think I'm gonna lobby for it. That's the kind of immigration reform that I can believe in.

I can't understand it because it doesn't make any sense. How can restaurants make Ethiopian food of all things that is decent in DC, NYC, and LA but they only place in the world capable of making Chicago style pizza is Chicago? The same goes for NY pizza.

An Ethiopian immigrant wanting to open a restaurant will do so whether he landed in NY or in Chattanooga and all things being equal, the quality will be the same.
OTOH, somebody who hasn't operated a pizzeria in NY will have no clue how to make good NY-style pizza.

We may think that the Ethiopian food that we eat is good but only an actual Ethiopian will know the truth just like only an actual New Yorker will know if some "NY-style" pizza in LA or elsewhere is good.

I know what is good or bad NY pizza or Italian food because I've lived in those places and know how the real stuff is supposed to taste like. However what I may think is excellent Ethiopian food might make an actual Ethiopian throw up.

But as I've already said, ex-NYC pizzeria owners have opened pizzerias all over the country. Chris maintains that those still aren't the same as NY pizza.

And unlike pizza, I don't think that I've ever seen an Ethiopian restaurant that wasn't owned by an Ethiopian. They probably have some that don't serve authentic food, but I've never seen one. Some are better than others, but they are all authentic Ethiopian food.

On that same note, strangely the closest soul food restaurant to me along with one of the next closest are both owned by Mexicans. It makes sense though since the cooks at nearly every restaurant in LA are Mexican (or other Hispanic) no matter what type of food they serve. A guy that I used to work with would argue whether that was because Mexicans are great cooks (him) or whether they worked for cheap (me). Maybe a little of both. ;)

Carls are particularly dirty, as are White Castle, Jack in the Box, BK, and most of them. McDOnald's IS the cleanest, Wendy's probably second.

IT's not that easy to even find good pizza IN NY, especially on Long Island, and outside the city. Many Long Island and NYC locations aren't even that great.

Many restaurants in the NY Metro area are run by Greeks. We don't have the "Mexicans working everywhere" sort of phenomena that you have in LA. For example, I noticed that most fast food workers in LA are Mexican adults. Most of NY's fast food restaurants are teenager workers.

Speaking of "Mexicans" working in evry restaurants, we have a funny phenomena in Brooklyn and Queens, and that is "Chinese Mexican Restaurants"....they turned up about 10 years ago, and the restaurant looks like your typical Chinese take out when you walk in, is run by Chinese, and the Menu even looks like your typical Chinese Menu, but is "MExican".

Exactly correct. I can't explain it, but that is exactly what I am saying too. Again, there are many BAD pizza places in the NY area too, and that is something that Easy doesn't seem to get. He thinks that "if it looks like NY pizza", it is "NY pizza", and it's something that is hard to explain. Counterfeit NY Pizza has absolutely no taste, and is tomato sauce on bad thin crust with the wrong cheese. We have many of those on Long Island, and there are even many within the city, and that crap is what I have had outside of NY too, in places such as LA. The best LA pizza (trying to look like NY pizza) was about as good as mediocre Long Island pizza.

You're right; I've never been to Detroit. I didn't say it doesn't exist, just that I haven't found it.

Nancy's Pizza, which has been rated the best (I've never tried it), has two outlets in Atlanta, but they've received negative reviews online from Chicagoans.

I'm surprised Lou Malnati's hasn't opened an outlet in Las Vegas.

I've found Chicagoans to be similar to NY'ers in that they insist that good Chicago deep dish pizza can only be found in the Chicago area. There must be some home-cooking factor that causes additional endorphins to be released making food taste better when eaten in your home city.

The criticisms against the Atlanta Nancy's included vegetables that were still frozen and plasticky cheese, so I think it goes beyond location. "Chicago style" pizza I've had in Providence has way too much baking soda in the crust and it tastes like a bowl-shaped animal cracker. And then there's "Uno Chicago Grill"... :(

I don't doubt that there's good Chicago pizza in Detroit. There probably is in Cleveland and Toledo, too.

Chicago's situation is VERY similar to NY. People call it "Chicago Pizza" just because it's "deep dish" pizza in a Chicago style. But it's not, and while it may be "good", it's NOT the same thing.
It's the same with NY pizza. I am not saying that there isn't good "Neopolitan" pizza (which is what NY pizza is a style of) outside of NY, it just isn't the same as good "NY Pizza". As I said, there is plenty inferior pizza IN the NY area itself.

Of course there is certainly bad Chicago pizza out there. Maybe more bad than good. But there are some foods that some locals will swear you can only get the good stuff where it's known. NY and Chicago pizza, Philly cheesesteak, maybe Buffalo wings. I haven't checked, but I would guess that many of the bad Yelp reviews for Chicago pizza in other parts of the country - including Detroit, Toledo and Cleveland - are written by people from Chicago saying that it's not authentic or as good as home.

NY and Chicago pizza, correct. Philly cheesesteak, correct. Buffalo Wings, not so much....that is pretty common everywhere.

That is not to say you can't get a good Philly cheesesteak or NY pizza or deep dish pizza outside of NY or Chicago, but most of the time, it doesn't come close to the real thing.

You can add Cajun/Creole cooking from New Orleans too, and Cuban sandwiches from Miami. I have tried it elsewhere, but it never comes close.
There are also various styles of BBQ that usually you can't get outside of those areas of the midwest too. Memphis for example has a style of BBQing that you can only get there. Others may try and copy, but it never comes close. There are other styles of BBQ too that are tried to be copied elsewhere from other locations too.

Googling leads me to 1993. I don't remember myself, exactly, that seems right to me, at least moreso than 1990.

Could be, that's why I said originally 1992, but then thinking back, Dan Cortese was doing the BK commercials as early as 1990 or earlier, so it made me think it could have been earlier.

Hey, it's no different than ordering a "burrito with black bean". I am also partial to Chinese chicken with string bean. Usually they give me more than one bean though, regardless of what the menu says.... :)

Of course there is certainly bad Chicago pizza out there. Maybe more bad than good.

There's even more bad Chicago pizza in Chicago than there is good. There are really only a handful of places that make good deep-dish pizza, and almost all of them that aren't Pizzeria Uno were started by people who used to work at Pizzeria Uno.

But there are some foods that some locals will swear you can only get the good stuff where it's known. NY and Chicago pizza, Philly cheesesteak, maybe Buffalo wings.

With the exception of seafood or produce, it can't be true because people move around. It might be harder to find, but it can be found somewhere. Missouri frozen custard in Las Vegas (heck, almost anything in Las Vegas) for example.

I haven't checked, but I would guess that many of the bad Yelp reviews for Chicago pizza in other parts of the country - including Detroit, Toledo and Cleveland - are written by people from Chicago saying that it's not authentic or as good as home.

I was using those cities as examples because they're rust belt cities where the culture is similar to Chicago and there are probably a fair number ex-Chicagoans around. The only online reviews I read by Chicagoans were some other random non-Yelp sites, and they specifically cited things that were wrong with the food itself (fake cheese, still-frozen toppings) and not authenticity problems.
