Used an electric and gas chainsaw (fumes..cough, cough, cough). 4. Ridden a motorcycle, even as a passenger. Never. 5. Fired a pistol or shotgun. Do cap pistols count ? 6. Roller skated/bladed. Yes, roller skated as a kid. A time consuming task to put those suckers on and don't forget the skate key. 7. Attended an NFL or NHL game. As for football, not once. But attended a football game where my brother was playing for Erasmus Hall HS (1961-62). Only hockey game I attended was NY Islander vs. Czechoslovakia at the Nassau Coloseum. 8. Ridden Amtrak. My dad took me to the Empire State Building when I was very young. I didn't get to climb the stairs inside the Statue of Liberty until I went with a school group - 7th or 8th grade IIRC. I did go to the WTC a couple of times - once alone and another time to take friends who were visiting from out of town.I absolutely refuse to even take visitors to the Statue of Liberty ever since they closed the stairs to the top. I consider it a rip-off. They say admission is free but you have to pay for the ferry ride to get there - since the ferry is the ONLY WAY there then it effectively has an admission charge and since access to the crown is blocked and the ferry ride is the same cost (or more) you are getting less for more. Therefore I have been very active on the net telling all potential tourists to avoid it as the rip-off that it now is. |

Bigger than what you expect it to be.Sushi is good stuff. You can go to the grocery store and try some with cooked, imitation, crab meat if it's the raw fish part that turns you off. Then if you like it, try the real stuff. |

I don't see what the big deal would be about paying a few bucks. My problem is with the fact that you get less. Prior to 9/11 you were able to climb to the top of the statue whereas that access is no longer permitted yet access to the island still costs the same. It is a rip-off as long as people are not allowed to climb to the top. I can see and photograph the statue from the FREE Staten Island Ferry. Ever since the access to the crown has been restricted the number of visitors to that ripoff have been cut almost in half - obviously many people feel about it the same way I do. |

But they did not reduce the price - so you are getting less and paying the same (or even more now). That is my definition of rip-off. They also state that there is no cost to enter the island - that is technically true but since the ferry is the only way to get there then that is the real cost, which has not been reduced. It is absolutely disgraceful that other monuments have reopened while the parks department is using bogus excuses to keep the statue closed. |

Best is March to mid-June: cool weather, rain is rare, not too crowded, and the days are long. In fact, the whole canyon country (Southern Utah + Grand Canyon) is worth at least a 1-week visit at that time of year. |

May of 2007 I was all set to go hike down and go camping in the Grand Canyon with some friends. We had reserved a campsite back in July of 2006 (you have to make your resrvations a year in advance), planned our itinerary, gotten our permit, booked our flights, etc. In February of 2007 I went to the doctor to let him check on some sciatica that was bothering me and it turned out to be a benign spinal tumor that had to be removed. So that was that for the Canyon. My wife and I will try to get there next April, sans backpacks.I never thought of using a chainsaw as a must-do in my life. The opportunity simply never presented itself. I do like to go camping, although I haven't gone since the surgery, and usually have a bow saw an an axe for cutting firewood. Maybe I'll buy a gas-powered saw for the next trip. It'll be easier on my surgically-repaired back. As far as Bingo goes, it's something that my wife said she used to do with her mother & aunt when she was a kid. She always talks about how much money her mother used to win (I guess she was very lucky), and how much fun it was. One day I'll humor her and suggest we should go. |

The last time I was in Tijuana with a friend, the first thing I heard upon passing through the turnstiles into Mexico was the cab driver yelling to me in English: "Hey, you want me to take you to see the girls? You wanna get some action?"The first thing we encountered upon entering Nuevo Laredo were young men saying "You want doctor? Dentist? Pharmacy? Optician?" From what I gather, many American who don't have health insurance cross into Mexico for cheap medical care. Given the squalor of Nuevo Laredo I cannot even begin to imagine what the quality of the care must be like. There also were couple of drink hustlers outside of bars (Beer? Pina colada?") I'd sooner have drunk out of a clogged toilet in a homeless shelter during an amoebic dysentery epidemic. My LIRR/NYCT blog My LIRR/NYCT blog |
