Hey, I'm imagining you chasing the chain snatcher.

But even in the 50's my family says growing up on Eldert and Knickerbocker they felt like it was lower Ridgewood and shopped on Myrtle.

People never embraced Bushwick until gentrification. Heck, people in East Williamsburg call that area Bushwick.

I still don't get what you are saying. All of 11772 is Patchouge, A very small part of it happens to be an incorporated village within Patchouge itself. Patchogue that is not the village wraps around it on three sides (the fourth side is the water Why should the small part that's the Village have a separate post office? The same is true of Bellport/Bellport Village, Babylon/Babylon village. They are all "Babylon". A small part within the zip code is an incorporated village.

The borders of “11772” and the “Village of Patchogue” are not coterminous. This is true for every single village save one on Long Island.

Yes, they don't share the same borders. The incorporated part of Patchogue is a small part with Patchogue. It's all "Patchogue". You don't address an envelope "Patchogue Village, NY 11772". A part of Patchogue, a small part, us a village. I still don't get what you are getting at though. This isn't the same as "Flushing, NY for Ridgewood, or "Jamaica, NY" for Richmond Hill.
For it to be the same, instead of saying "Patchogue, NY 11772", you would have to say "Brookhaven, NY 11772", as Patchogue is n the Town of Brookhaven, which is not done.

The towns haven’t existed for over 120 years. But they used to and the “postal cities” largely correspond to them with that one exception. I want to know why. “114xx” almost perfectly corresponds to the old Town of Jamaica and 111xx to the City of Long Island City.

And there are towns (outside of Long Island) that are small and do not have multiple hamlets and villages inside.

It's confusing to say "towns" in NY, as NY uses Townships to group villages and unincorporated hamlets.

There also towns that are coterminous with villages like Scarsdale. So the fact that a town might function like a township on Long Island in 2021 says nothing about towns in western Queens County before 1898.

As SP says, the term is "town."

In upstate, with the exception of cities, in general every bit of land is part of a Town. Some land is also part of a Village.

Example: the Town of Hunter includes land that is also in the Village of Hunter or the Village of Tannersville. But most of the land in the Town of Hunter is not part of any other government entity below the County level.

People who live in the Village of Tannersville pay taxes to the Village as well as to the Town and the County.

There are towns that are sufficiently small that there is only one named place within the town, and so that is also the post office name.

Grand Island, NY in Erie County is one such example.

Yes, but I don't know what Al was referring to. Many people say "a town like Sayville", or fill in a blank, when they mean a location, and really mean a Hamlet, not a Town. A Town is a distinct entity, that comprises many hamlets and villages, the town of Islip, the Town of Babylon, the Town of Oyster Bay, and so forth. And to further confuse things, these towns often have hamlets or villages with the same name within them.....Islip the xip code, the hamlet of Brookhaven, the hamlet of riverhead, and so forth....not to be confused with the vast multi hamlet Town of the same names

What you’re saying is true on Long Island but is not true for all New York towns. Even on Long Island, the exception to that is Shelter Island. There is a village on Shelter Island but pretty much everyone refers to the whole thing as Shelter Island.

The point being is that there are towns which are basically treated not as a township but as a single entity. This is relevant because the discussion went to why the former Newtown is treated as part of the former Flushing by the post office. And there actually was a Village of Flushing, but the other villages and hamlets that used to exist in the Town of Flushing also have “Flushing, NY” ZIP codes.

The 3 cities, 9 towns, and 12 villages that Greater New York replaced in 1898 are represented by the stars on the flag of the NYPD.

A Town is a distinct entity, that comprises many hamlets and villages

True on LI but not necessarily true upstate.

Many upstate towns don't comprise many hamlets and villages, or even more than one. The Town of Halcott in Greene County comprises a single hamlet (more like a cluster of houses than a hamlet - I don't think it really has stores), and has a total population of 248.

OK, I certainly agree with that. "Town" has a specific legal meaning. It has a government, and its residents pay real estate taxes to it. Same for an actual "Village" or "City" but obviously many people use the word for places that are none of the above.

i think it's because brooklyn was developed with a grid pattern of straight streets. with exceptions of course but mainly straight streets. on basically flat land. most of it wasnt descended from old established towns. from fields, farms and plains direct to developed streets which eventually all merged amd all land was filled in.

queens was different, with its variegated topography, established towns and villages, old country paths and waterfront settlements. the sense of the old towns lingers.

PW PD predates NCPD and is actually a police district sanctioned by the State Legislature. Lots of the areas in NC have their own PD providing patrol services, particularly ones with money. They will also contract with NCPD for many services.

Correct. Ridgewood, being the abormality in queens actually us half and half. The parts that retained their old Brooklyn numbers generally don't....1832 Whatever Street. On the other side of Forest Ave, they jump from the Brooklyn numbers system to the Queens number system jump from 2032 Whatever At to 60-16 Whatever Street. Odd stuff.
Further.ore, much of Ridgewood retained their old original street names, and others went to the Queens number streets
...sometimes intermixed street to street!! Very odd.
