i think it's because brooklyn was developed with a grid pattern of straight streets. with exceptions of course but mainly straight streets. on basically flat land. most of it wasnt descended from old established towns. from fields, farms and plains direct to developed streets which eventually all merged amd all land was filled in.

queens was different, with its variegated topography, established towns and villages, old country paths and waterfront settlements. the sense of the old towns lingers.
