What you’re saying is true on Long Island but is not true for all New York towns. Even on Long Island, the exception to that is Shelter Island. There is a village on Shelter Island but pretty much everyone refers to the whole thing as Shelter Island. The point being is that there are towns which are basically treated not as a township but as a single entity. This is relevant because the discussion went to why the former Newtown is treated as part of the former Flushing by the post office. And there actually was a Village of Flushing, but the other villages and hamlets that used to exist in the Town of Flushing also have “Flushing, NY” ZIP codes. The 3 cities, 9 towns, and 12 villages that Greater New York replaced in 1898 are represented by the stars on the flag of the NYPD. |
