Maybe it's done that way in Pigskuckle where you live because the quality of medicine is so poor? The hospitals in NY where my dad and brother did surgery had an anesthesiologist supervising several CRNAs. Typically both the MD and CRNA speak with the patient, and the CRNA does the job. The MD is called in only when it's a difficult case or the CRNA or surgeon requests assistance. |

Federal law, as well as the guidelines of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, requires that anesthesia must be administered by:1) An anesthesiologist; or 2) A doctor of medicine or osteopathy (other than an anesthesiologist); or 3) A dentist, oral surgeon, or podiatrist who is qualified to administer anesthesia under State law; or 4) A certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), who, unless exempted, is under the supervision of the operating practitioner or of an anesthesiologist who is immediately available if needed; or 5) An anesthesiologist's assistant who is under the supervision of an anesthesiologist who is immediately available if needed. Only one of these professionals is required in the OR, not two. |

New York State has a Department of Health that sets standards that exceed the lowest standards of federalista. And because of that little thing called "lawyers" (I'm sure you've heard of them) hospitals (not your drive-in stop and shop abortion clinics) will ensure that there's fewer chances of things going wrong. Imagine that? Exceeding the minimum standards out of an abundance of caution?In Texas, they'd probably be shot for doing that. Here in New York, it makes us feel safer. |
