Change on B103 |
|
Posted by MATHA531 on Mon Feb 27 22:38:22 2012 Interesting change put in on B103 (yes there were signs). Starting today, they changed the route on the buses headed to downtown Brooklyn getting off the Prospect Expressway and driving down 7th Avenue to 9th Street then across on 9th Street to 5th Avenue and 5th Avenue to Flatbush past the Barclay Centre on Flatbush to make the left turn onto Livingston. There was no congestion to speak of on 7th or 5th, a bit on Flatbush. Originally the route stayed on the Prospect Expressway to 4th Avenue and used 3rd Avenue to Flatbush and the quick two left turns onto Livingston. That route sometimes could get congested and when it did, they used 4th Avenue.....seemed to me to be a bit longer than the old way this morning. Not complaining mind you. They must know what they're doing. Or do they? |

Other than bypassing the Park Slope neighborhood, it's a local bus with some widely spaced stops.I think there should be more B103-like routes in the system. Widely spaced stops with good connections. I wouldn't be against adding a stop somewhere in Park Slope (only 1 though) and then at Atlantic Term. |

Question is, is the B103 living up to its purpose, which I believe is to give BM1-4 branch riders an opportunity to get to Downtown Brooklyn fast by changing at Church / E 7th?Either way, the B103 runs pretty often right now to all of a sudden have half of its line cut. Were these periodic service increases justified? |

Local, but it does use hand me down Orions from the express routes though, many still have their padded seats! But that won't be for much longer, as more new LF CNGs come to SC they will eventually be retired. |

Most of the ridership is between the Junction and Caransie, B103 has a LOT of short turns at the Junction. The service increase on that part of the route is justified. Its crazy as imagine if the TA never took over Command and all those people had to ride the B6! |

Much of it are the school kids who have chosen not to attend Canarsie and South Shore and are bussed across the borough o what they think are better schools. Once you get to the junction, half the buses are short turned and for the most part, there are seats to be had (although many of these kids continue on to some school near Coney Island Avenue, I don't know what school it is). I wouldn't say the branch from the junction to downtown is empty but there are almost always ample seats to be had (which is important as it is a long long ride...I think, also the opening of Target at the junction has had something to do with the increaser in ridership and the addition of much more Saturday service and Sunday service. |

I would add only one stop too---at 9 Street, plus Atlantic Terminal. What other B103-like routes could be possible though that don't already have a viable subway alternative? The B103 works because the MTA tapped a previously untapped market. |

I would say that the addition of B103 service, starting with midday service, is what attracted people to it. The MTA probably never anticipated that the ridership would explode though. |

How about a B103 branch (different route number of course) to the BM1, 3, and 4 branches for starters? The B103 is successful because it both connects two areas that would otherwise be unconnected (Downtown Bklyn with Canarsie) and fills in gaps in local service along the way (Avenues M and H).So maybe something from Manhattan Beach (North shore) then via Knapp St (entirety), then to, say, Kings Plaza, and non-stop to Rockaway Pkwy L Station. Can be adjusted as you wish but just thinking out loud. |

And this is one main reason why the MTA should learn how to market new services andwhile reducing service on the least (and I mean LEAST) profitable routes. If the MTA was as bold as NICE, they would eventually learn from the mistakes of cutting service. I am not saying cutting a route which serves only one or two passengers per trip, I am taking about reducing frequencies on most routes and eliminating routes which cause a large gap of bus service in an affected area. |

If there is a need for B 103 routes, then I would say that should one of the purposes that an SBS route should be used for. Since building subway lines are too expensive and too NIMBY supportive, SBS/BRT would be the best option. In the case of Brooklyn a crosstown B 103 or SBS like route is needed to connect Southwest Brooklyn with Southeast Brooklyn or even to JFK Airport. |

I would not use the boldness of NICE to compare it with MTA, MTA's problem is that budget prevents Operation planning from modifying the system. It only modifies when there is a public outcry and/or a major impact that involves a local polition is involved (for example Ridgewood Terminal or a city demand to a development project or it can be a feeder to a subway line.Let s be real, the decline in bus ridership and the increase of subway ridership is evidence. If modifications were made in the Brooklyn system, I guarantee you that service would improve. There are studies put out last year that the outerboros are showing job growth and that bus and subway system does not assist in that growth. So utilized that info and build more interboro (Brooklyn - Queens/Bronx - Queens) crosstown routes. Use SBS or Express bus routes that also are interboro routes. Again south Brooklyn is in need of this. Just my 2 cents |

But instead of or in addition to SBS how about an old-fashioned express - widely spaced (mile or more) stops across the borough. Like a stop in Bay Ridge, a stop in Dyker Heights, a stop in Bensonhurst, a stop in Midwood, a stop in Flatbush, etc. and then have a series of those. |

They were very unreliable for the first 6 years or so, then they got slightly better at least reliability wise. The ride quality was always poor, the rear half of the bus was always hot & had a natural gas odor. I for one would pass them up 95% of the time, the weather had to be poor or I really needed to be someplace for me to ride them. I was extremely happy when they were retired from service. |

I mention in another post on this same topic what I believe should happen with Express buses, there is a need for crosstown express or SBS routes. Here is an example of what I think should happen An express or SBS route from Bay Ridge - 4 Av/95 St to JFK Airport via 4 Av, 65 ST, Av P, Kings Hwy, Av K, Flatlands Av, Fountain Av, Linden Blvd, Counduit Blvd*, Lefferts Blvd*, Lefferts Blvd - Airtrain Station. *Working on a way to create a station or stop to the Racino. This is a route I think will get a plus by many people in south Brooklyn area, an experimental route for future routes. To me that is what SBS, Express, and B 103 like routes should be. |

Rode the 10a.m. from Williams Avenue to Tillary Street today beginning to end. Weekday midday. I was surprised at the numbers with 8 buses per hour - many standees from about Ralph to Nostrand, though they probably could have sat if they needed to. Once we were passed Nostrand, headed to Downtown, we were down to a few and I was one of 7 that was aboard for the highway / non-stop stretch.Maybe it should be half-hourly to Downtown during the day. You'd probably be able to cut a third of the buses and I don't think you'd lose many riders as the ones who appreciate the service would just start looking at the schedule. |

In addition I don't see why they use 9th St and 5th Avenue - what's wrong with the B67 route via 7th and Flatbush? It just gave two extra turns which both took a while - we were 4 minutes late at the end at Tillary, but I would say we would have been right on time if we just used 7th and Flatbush. |

You are aware, aren't you, that every other bus short turns at the junction and really during mid day only 4 buses an hour goes all the way downtown....it picks up somewhat during peak hours but of course during peak hours, traffic is much heavier. I also wonder if it would make more sense on the trip from downtown to stay on the Prospect Expressway and make a left at Beverley to Coney Island Avenue..(I am sure they can get special permission from the city to go the one block from Church to Beverley (or is Beverly) Road....as it is now that detour via McDonald Avenue to Church adds about 10 minutes to the route from downtown. |
