When I use the word "commuter" I am refering to the average working Joe who goes from eastern LI toward the city M-F with his monthly commutation ticket and who goes the other way in the PM rush. This is the majority of LIRR ridership, the frequent riders. Very few of these are going to/from east of Speonk (and east of Ronkonkoma for that matter).A person spending a weekend or a few days in a far eastern destination (for my purposes east of Speonk) is not the everyday rider (commuter) I am refering to, rather is a casual rider. People who spend a summer weekend/holiday out there is a discretionary rider, not a commuter. |

Yes, but again, these are jam packed full length trains. (Often 8 cars of full double deckers) that run to Montauk on Friday summers and the busiest weekends being Labor day and Memorial day....Fridays.It's the majority of the Montauk branch's ridership. And it's hardly discrecionary when it's the last weekend of your summer rental that you paid tens of thousands of dollars for (and often over hundred). The season ends on Labor day weekend. |

What it does not *appear* to investigate is trespasser deaths or MVCs at grade crossings unless there are other interesting (to them) facts that require their attention for the safety of the public. I have checked the NTSB website and as far as railroads are concerned: "The Safety Board investigates many railroad accidents, including freight train collisions and derailments; however, it places special emphasis on train accidents that involve the traveling public, such as passenger train and rail rapid transit accidents. The Board’s criteria for investigating a railroad accident include accidents involving a fatality or substantial damage. As a result of railroad accident investigations, the Board issues safety recommendations to agencies such as the FRA, the FTA, the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak), state regulatory agencies, rapid transit agencies, trade associations, and common carriers. Safety studies in the rail mode have examined areas such as the transportation of hazardous materials and rapid transit systems." NTSB decides what they will investigate. Employee deaths appear to be among these as evidenced by the list of separate reports cited to you. Trespassers and grade crossings appear to be of less interest to them unless there are other circumstances involved i.e. a school bus or issues of highway alignments, MERTA taking out 15 cars at once, and major damage to the train. Things like that. LION is still waiting.

Oh well, one of the kids can drive to Speonk and fetch him. They all got cell phones now, andthey can arrange that.
