Nah I know alot about things and have seen things done faster than they did.

If I really thought it couldn't be done and haven't seen it done I'd keep my mouth closed.

BTW you work for RR Mgmt?? Last I heard you worked for an engineering firm's mailroom?

Before resorting to attacking one's career maybe one should look at their own career.

Well, in fact IINM they did not have to bustitute the whole system as the Port Washington line was still running, also I believe they suspended some services.

Also, I never said the bustitution would be completely up and running in 5 hours, but rather they could have gotten something running in 5 hours. Sorry if you didn't understand that.

Buses were never really practical in this situation. We are talking about 300 ten car trains (3000) cars x 100 peeps/car (300,000 people)

We are talking about 6000 buses. I'm not sure there are that many spare buses and drivers available on Long Island.

Some talked about busing "around the affected area" but before you ask this, ask youself "Where *are* the trains?" Yup, they were all WEST of Jamaica station and not available for use. So while some buses may have been able to transport people to Queens Village or Valley Stream, there would be no trains waiting for them there.

It was completely useless to even think of buses, and the only possibility was to use TRAINS. To do that they would have to throw the switches from the ground and signal trains through by hand. What they did was just as good, spiking switches so that there could be NO SWITCHING ERRORS, and then flagging the trains through.

It knocked the efficiency out of the railroad, but in the end was indded the only possible solution.

I just showed you that you would have needed 6000 buses to transport 300,000 people. That is simply the math: one seat per ass.

Now suppose they did use them to flex around the affected tower, from Jamaica to Queens or Valley. If each bus made 3 runs per hour, and we ran them over a period of two hours, you would still need 1000 buses.

But there would be no trains to meet them at Queens or Valley, since all of the equipment would still be in Manhattan, LIC or Brooklyn.

Yes, Yes, there would be a few trains east of HALL, but the logistics still do not work out. Trains could arrive at Jamaica every three minutes. But can you get that many people into the buses before the station sinks into the mud under the weight of the people? Having 3000 people a minute walking down those steps and looking for buses.

Dewd, sometimes bustitute is NOT an option. Period.

No you said: "I know that it is utter nonsense to think that the LIRR could have:

2) gotten the bustitution up and running in less than 5 hours"

1. My apologies I took the sentence literally, but yes I should have known what you meant.

2. I think they could have gotten something up and running in 'less than 5 hours', but they didn't and I think they could have gotten something up and running (not completely) in less than 3 hours

maybe I am being too idealistic

DING DING DING DING! We have a winner! In an ideal world thousands of buses would appear out of thin air and magically drive to where they need to be in less than three hours. And that's without even getting drivers involved. I'm glad you now see where you went wrong. The world is not ideal, and buses do not appear out of thin air, they can not drive to where they need to be in no time at all, and the necessary manpower can not be reassigned and/or called in from home and mobilized in less than three hours!

Take Pride,
