Heh. Well, it was LIVONIA at the time, ZOO LOTS ... the rot'n'roll "revival" was South Ferry of course ... but it was a "north end" express at least - if you didn't walk to the RIGHT station though, you'd ROT as "honk-honk" blew past ya. I'm sure 1/9 riders got a dose of "are we THERE yet? I gotta go NOW!" stuff and thought the 1/9 was BS. :)When I lived at 231, I could get to midtown faster WALKING from 231 to 211th and Isham and just rot on the A train. It *was* faster than the 1 train. The "TruExpress" almost made up the difference, but this Bronx Boy *loved* da IND compared to the "Potato express." Heh. |

ONCE upon a time, those intervals WERE the schedule. Until the MTA realized that they ALSO got the IRT out of the deal and cured THAT chit with timers. :(Seriously, when *I* was a kid in the 50's, Van Courtlandt trains were "2 every 3 minutes" ... and VCP *turned them around* with only a two-stub terminal "WITH crossovers AND interference" ... (yahds) ... GEE. What HAPPENED to 90 second intervals? Oh yeah, MTA and their D'Amatos and other LIBERAL GOP Rockefellers. :) |

With some of the reactions, I don't even want to say what my score is. Suffuce it to say; my wife is studying psychology, and she figured I have it years ago.Of course; I too take trains, and every day. I'm getting one in about an hour, in fact. Unlike that other kid (and wasn't there a different one, about the same age, years ago?) I waited for the T/O exam to be open to the public. I was always into the subway; but never into doing anything really bad, like stealing. For me, I was just different, and often not understood by people, especially with intereste like trains. For some reason I was never interested in operating. Never even watched them operate or noticed the controls or whatever. I was more into watching the tunnels/tracks ahead (By the time I was 10, I could have easily found my way in walking from Newkirk to Fordham, or Newkirk to 148. I just remember the "pfff" noise at some stations (which I know know as the "pop" of the GE controller in full service). And I knew that they had to punch at some locations, and that the aspects on those double-signals would change from one thing to the other. I was also interested in which line went where, and which equipment ran where. This particularly spiked when I grew up, and you had the major Manny B changes, and tons of new equipment coming in, and then, I discovered the ERA. I am not into trains nearly as much as many on the board, or the ERA. I am generally intense in my interests, but they are spread out. Everything from cartoons (I have a Scooby site under this aol account), to Christian doctrine (which I participate in and have sites on on my other screen name). And now I've discovered Wikipedia. I knew about that for a while, as it often comes up in searches; but I recently just noticed that anyone could edit it. So I'm having a ball adding info to that. (Just look up "Pseudosphere" (a geometrical concept) or "Hangly Man", or the one I just did the other day, "Tweetie Pie". I also added some info to "M Train" and some other subway lines. Thanks; whoever had already posted the link to my Line History page there!☺) Selkirk, you shouldn't scoff so hard. These things generally take time to be dicovered, as we are constantly learning new things. Remember; they though a round earth not in the center of the universe was "wooden horse poop" (or whatever you call it) as well. It is not a ploy to gain special favors or excuses, or whatever, though some may be pleading that for McCallum (sp?). I myself don't know what they should do about him. |

Then either you walk extremely fast or the A train used to travel at least 15 mph faster on average (not top speed -- average speed including stops) than it does now.More likely, it felt faster. Which is fine, but think also about how it feels to be unable to board the train further down the line because there aren't enough locals, or about how it feels to waste a minute at each local stop while the conductor fights to get the doors closed because the people on the train don't quite fit. Except there it's also reality, not just feeling. |

I have a friend who has been indentified as "an undiagnosed Asperger's Syndrome" sufferer. The fixation on single events in his life is a "trademark" of his. He has massive social skills problems (he does not understand how to relate to women (it has been remarked by others that he would do very well in 1890 with his attitudes), and constatly remarks that "I'm still under the yoke of that tyrant." The tyrant he blames for not becoming a motorman has been dead for nine years, yet he still cannot realize his "dream". |

Your friend might have a very prononuced case of Asperger's Syndrome from what you are describing. Not everyone with Asperger's Syndrome have a fixation of a single event that they bring up constantly. Like many other conditions, Asperger's Syndrome is a little different in each case. Some Aspies may only be mildly weak with their social skills, but might have a fixation on train timetables just to give you an example.#3 West End Jeff |

First, my apologies ... my "scoffing" wasn't intended the way it appeared to go. I'm not fond of "psychology" and those who "practice" it. Goes back to the days when I was in school in the 50's and got sent to see numerous "shrinks" owing to "behavior problems" in school. And the IQ tests, and the "association tests" and all sorts of weird diagnoses. What the shrinks never bothered to check was my EYES. Once I got glasses, I could see and didn't have to ask friends if what I thought I was seeing on the blackboard was correct or not being able to function because I couldn't quite make out what was going on. Vision never even occurred to any of them, each had their "pet disease" and by gum, *I* had it. :(I scoff at "A.D.D." since the primary purpose seems to be peddling ritalin. And I suppose I also scoff at "victim culture" ... but my point is that Aspergers' isn't all that terribly serious a "disease" and in fact it's a blessing for many - unique outlooks, unique abilities. My concern is people believing somehow that because of this, they're something less than they were before in their own eyes. I'm mainly concerned that folks are going to believe all this ... and lower their own value as a result. |

I always have been a "speedwalker" ... but my experiences with the A over the 1 were based on a real clock ... a couple of minutes saved at least doing it my way. Bear in mind also that from that far up, it's a 35-45 minute trip as compared to how long when you start out downtown? There were also more frequent trains back then, even on the local track. Between the B/AA and CC, it wasn't so bad given the relatively light ridership on CPW ... |
