Like many things that psychiatrists and clinical psychologists come up with, this isn't a proper syndrome (like a cold), it is a collection of behaviours that when they exist in a particular combination become noticeable in particular circumstances.Because of this, the label is misused and over-generalised, so that people who display some of the 'symptoms' suddenly find that they are misdiagnosed as 'mild aspergers' by friends and family (an oxymoron, how can someone be mildly clinically impaired in social or occupational functioning? Not quite enough friends, not promoted fast enough?). |

Nah, the "year and a day" of Yank tort law is long gone - this was the early 1970's and IBM. But after that episode, I learned to walk out on interviews where they even entertained such. Same for "drug tests" ... see any track marks? Are my eyes bloodshot? Did I make a "foo pas" in judgement or otherwise indicate "suspicious behavior?" If the answer is no, then "NEXT!"As I near "senior citizen status," I never cease to be amused at the faddish things generally accepted as "wisdom." Heh. I don't think I qualify for the "disease" based on the tests, but I *am* "diagnosed" as "dyslexic" from childhood (and therefore a menace on rubber tires but TRACKS normally make the correct turn where required so long as you know your aspects and indications) ... I dunno ... I never was "wired right" but sure had an interesting and enjoyable life in the media, in electronics and now in computers. Somehow, whatever others think is wrong with me has been a plus and aside from republicans and democrats, I seem to get along with most everybody ELSE. Heh.And REMEMBER, *all* of us like trains! OBVIOUSLY there's a far NATTIER disease out there than Assburgers ... would you like flies with taht? :) |

Merriam-Webster defines it as "a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality." We use the word "syndrome" when we don't know what the cause of the symptoms is, or even if all the symptoms have the same cause. This is different from a disease, which is a condition whose symptoms we know to share a common cause. A historical expample is AIDS, or Accquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It got its name in the late 1970s, before we knew that the symptoms of AIDS were caused by HIV infection. Not knowing why the symptoms of immune deficiency, etc. showed up together, the condition was named a syndrome. Today, we know the cause of AIDS, and that it's symptoms share a common cause. So today, AIDS can't really be considered a syndrome, but a disease. Mark |

Not quite what I was getting at. There are lots of clusters of behaviours and personality traits out there. The ones that get named receive designations only because of the politics of the society in which the people live. But as we all know, labels don't necessarily make things real. Why should Aspergers' have a label, and not other clusters?Anyway, lets up the precision of language slightly: Aspergers' is not a proper syndrome (like AIDS), it is a collection of behaviours that have been identified as a syndrome by psychologists with particular prejudices. |

Again I think it is a matter of degrees. If the personality traits are mild, they don't constitute either a syndrome or a disease. When they become debilitating, then it becomes the proper domain of mental health professionals. And if a set of debilitating symptoms occur together often enough, then they may properly be called a syndrome.I emphasize "debilitating" for a reason. If the condition is not debilitating, then you're right, there is no reason to use words like "syndrome" or any real label at all. But there are cases where these symptoms are debilitating to the point where the where the help of mental health professionals is needed. Such cases are real and must be distinguished from cases where such personality traits are not debilitating. Also, I want to stress again the difference between a syndrome and a disease. To call a condition a disease means you are attributing all its symptoms to a common cause, and usually that you can identify this cause. To call a condition a syndrome is not so bold a claim. You're merely claiming that such-and-such symptoms have been seen together in a number of patients, but you are not claiming to know the cause, nor that the symptoms have a common cause. By this definition, AIDS was a syndrome, but has "graduated" to disease status. Meanwhile, debilitating cases of Asperger's remain a syndrome. Mark |

Just based on the scores, a lot of us definitely don't have it, a lot of others have tendancies, but they are mild enough not to be considered as having Asperger's, and then a few others scored high enough that they might very well have it.The test put me in the middle group, which I can agree with, since I have some of the tendancies, but not in the debilitating ways that would, in my opinion, I would need in order to qualify myself as having any sort of medical condition. AM and PM rush, they'd have the 1 train alternate between the "toonerville trolley which made all stops" and a train that stopped southbound from 242 hitting 238, 231, 225, 200, 168, 137th and then went local fdrom there. Same uptown as a PM train. In the 50's and earlier, the CENTER TRACK was used and the "BWAY THRU EXP" (check old rollsigns, they were there on the 27's back to the 15's at least) and they left VCP witht he FIRST SB stop being Dyckman, then 168, 145, 137 and all stops. Same tradition. Evey OTHER train out of VCP in the AM and north in the PM was a "THRU EXP" ... and they were ALSO turning every OTHER 1 train at 137, MARKED as north terminal. 1 out of 2. IMAGINE the frequency of headway from the 60's on back. :(But now we got the EmTeeYay, more interested in political brown-nose points instead of RUNNING a damned railroad. :( |

And what were headways like at each stop?I know from experience that, at local stops south of 96, if headways grow beyond the scheduled 3 minutes in the AM rush, the C/R has to fight to get the doors closed at each stop. North of 96 I think crowding is similar (a bit less at each stop, but more consecutive stops without an escape valve). Short-turning could be done, but I don't think running express south of 137 would be manageable without a major increase in total service through the area. |
