Railfans and Asperger's Syndrome - find out for yourself

We've all heard the claim that some hard-core railfans have Asperger's Syndrome. Whether that's true or not, you now can find out for yourself with this online 100-question test.

Interesting. I scored a 77 now, 65 then and got this response:

"You seem to have some Aspie or ADHD-traits but well below average for Aspies"

I think the results were skewered by a handful of questions which I responded strongly to.

Hmm, with a 107 'then' and an 88 now, I guess I could be called a recovering aspie. Interesting in that it points out certain things which I likely could work on to ensure that what traits I do exhibit become less noticeable. I'm sure a few folks have noticed I have a tendancy toward long, highly detailed posts on subjects which catch my fancy, I believe RonInBS even called me on it. I don't see anything wrong with exhibiting some asperger's-like traits, it mostly seems to be a psychological qualification of what most people would simply term a nerd.

Uh oh....I'm in big trouble. I haven't a clue what ASPIE is but do I get a prize???????????? I scored 137. 'You have many ASPIE traits.'
I got chewed out today publicly by big boss because I enquired and stopped a precision machining process carried out by laborer who has difficulties in measurements when I discovered that the alignment process was NOT being used. 30/10,000 ths of an inch may seem very small but IF you delete alignment pin and just run a carbide cutting head into a template, eventually the template becomes distorted and one day, when you drop carbody upon modified trucks, the pins don't align. "Inspector, you're lucky to have a job because I gave it to you." Did he ever! I have bleeding hemmorhoids. When I or my floor supervisor do this work for MNRR, we will use the alignment pin...the circular hole in the template may be distorted BUT the two threaded holes for the proper process remain untouched. There will be NO costly mistakes made by us. 'Peta..you guyz from TA.' Sup P/Os me for fun...similar background but he was TA bus mechanic. OK...I'm ASPIE...am i going to die? CI peter

I don't belive a word of it myself (and I have a few credentials). If you are obsessively interested in football, getting hold of money, appearance, clothes, or babies, then you are 'normal'. If you are interested in things that other people are not interested in then you are threatening, and if you are unfortunate enough to bump into a psychologist who finds this threatening, then they will try to come up with a new disorder that will get them fame and fortune.

Every human on this planet has aspects about them that make them obsessive and can make them tedious and irritating to other people, we just differ in our specialist interests.

I haven't the time to take the test at the moment - I'll do it later - but after reading Thinking in Pictures, the autobiography of Temple Grandin, an autistic woman who has become a successful academic and consultant in the field of animal-handling systems, both my wife and I came separately to the conclusion that I may be mildly autistic (which is what Asperger's implies). I'm not bothered one way or the other - I've had a reasonably happy and successful life and I'm still going strong at 61, so what the hell?

Incidentally last Christmas I ordered a book from Amazon as a present for a relative, and Amazon sent totally the wrong book. What came was an Asperger's Dictionary, designed to help Asperger's sufferers understand figures of speech - explaining that 'like a bat out of hell' means 'very fast', and so on. I sent it back to Amazon but glanced at it briefly first.

If by 'mild autism' you mean that you like to devote time and effort to the things you care about, then thats human.

As a little anecdote, my partne likes art, so one day I took her to Dulwich Picture Gallery, which in terms of the art 'experience' seems to be one of the best galleries in the world because of the complete lack of security, railings, ropes, or anything.

To cut a long story short, this was heaven for her, apparently, being able to get really close to a Canaletto and touch it (she didn't, but relished the opportunity) was a moving experience.

As for me? Art? Well its nice pictures that you hang on the wall. But if the gallery had been full of original sketches of metro maps of the world, with some Beck originals thrown in, our roles would have been reversed. In the 'politics' of the world in which we live, she would be 'educated' and 'sensitive' whereas I would have a mild 'psychological defect'.

Having just taken the test, Max, I felt that it *did* test the right kinds of traits. It didn't particularly specify what subjects a person might be obsessive about, and whether they were majority or mino=rity interests. Most people have one or two odd-ball interests. For example, my grandfather grew only dahlias in his garden - outside the dahlia season, the garden was just bare earth!

But this drifting a bit OT (8-)

Well, you did know what this was testing for, and so you would have answered it in that frame of mind, and questions such as:

Do you have excellent long-term memory in subjects that interest you?

Are true for all people, its such a standard finding in psychology that you can use it as a demonstration in lectures (e.g. soap opera plots).

Don't forget that this is why horoscopes are so convincing. People are flexible enough in how they see themselves to adapt their perception to the vaguely worded horoscope rather than actually scrutinse the content and specificity.

Try some roleplay, imagine you are an art critic or a football fan, and try filling out the form. Don't forget that with questions such as:

"Are you very logical and get surprised or impatient when others aren't? "

that there is more than one logic that can be applied to the world.

I would love to see the scoring key for this questionnaire. Like most pop psychology, it looks as though it would wilt under scrutiny.

A quick google search gave me

www.colorquiz.com

and on the screen appeared eight colours (sorry, I'm British) with instructions to click on them, nothing else. Nothing to go on, so I picked out my favourite Underground Lines in a rough order of enjoying a journey on them:

Metropolitan
Northern
Bakerloo
Piccadilly
Central
Circle
Jubilee
[Not an Underground Line Colour]
(or something like that to the best of my memory)

Then the same colours appeared again, and I was told to pick out the ones that made me feel the best, and that this was not a memory test. Well, I don't really have favourite colours, it depends on the mood and the situation. I like a nice red sunset, but I wouldn't want to paint my office that colour. I had already picked out the Underground lines in a rough order of enjoying them, so I picked the same again.

Here is my assessment:

"Physical illness, over-tension, or emotional distress have taken a severe toll. His self-esteem has been reduced and he now needs peaceful conditions and considerate treatment to permit recovery."

So, am I a nervous wreck, or do I have aspergers because I am obsessed with urban rail transport, or does travelling on these Underground lines really turn you into a nervous wreck if you do it for too long in this order? Try it for yourselves, how about applying the colours to NYC!

Perhaps I had better have some neurolinguistic programming.

Wow, there is more than one page. Good job my dad is a psychiatrist.

The tenacity and strength of will necessary to contend with existing difficulties has become weakened. Feels overtaxed, worn out, and getting nowhere, but continues to stand his ground. He feels this adverse situation as an actual tangible pressure which is intolerable to him and from which he wants to escape, but he feels unable to make the necessary decision.

Feels cut off and unhappy because of the difficulty in achieving the essential degree of cooperation and harmony which he desires.

Willing to become emotionally involved, but demanding and particular in his choice of a partner and in his relations with those close to him. Needs reassurance and is careful to avoid open conflict since this might reduce his prospects of realizing his hopes.

Has an imperative need for some bond or fusion with another which will prove sensually fulfilling, but which will not conflict with his convictions or sense of fitness.

The tensions induced by trying to cope with conditions which are really beyond his capabilities, or reserves of strength, have led to considerable anxiety and a sense of personal (but unadmitted) inadequacy. He attempts to escape into a substitute world in which things are more nearly as he desires them to be.

Yes, we all are, but don't be in such a hurry. :)

No, Asperger's merely means that you're obsessed. And people who focus on one thing at a time are considered "mentally deficient" because they're not easily distracted when the media needs to divert your attention from the significant to "American Idol" while bad things happen. Asperger's means you're not "broadbanded" and have the attention span of a two year old. Just another of those "I'm better than you are" things that people like to do. Like "ADD" and other pseudo-diseases.

Chalk it up to failure to be properly "normed" when you were in school. :)

Not a thing wrong with it. It's just a matter of learning how to manage the unpleasant sides of it, which it sounds like you've done well.

I clicked two sets of colours at random, and got something different.

Of course, subtle shades are hard to show on computer monitors in any case, maybe if mine was set up correctly I would have been well-adjested.

Seriously though, I think that anyone who has ever been turned down for a job on the basis of a personality questionnaire has grounds for legal action on the following basis:

There is little or no evidence that certain personality scores are associated with success at particular jobs.

Therefore, anyone turned down is being discriminated against illegally: certain personality profiles are being denied access to jobs without evidence that they would perform badly at the jobs.

Any lawyers watching? I would be happy to be an expert witness!

Asperger's is more than just obsessiveness about this or that hobby. Lots of people show that trait. Obsessiveness is just one of many symptoms that have to occur together for a person to be considered as having Asperger's.

If it WEREN'T for Aspergers, we wouldn't have scientists, mathematicians, Albert Einstein, Edward Teller and a raft of other TRUE geniuses and the benefits thereof. As Bill Murray so adequately put it in the film "Stripes", "Sure we're mongrels and misfits but we'll be one lean fighting machine."

Only hypochrondriacs require their own telethon. :)

I came separately to the conclusion that I may be mildly autistic (which is what Asperger's implies).

Sort of...austism and Asperger's are both called "autism spectrum disorders," but there are some differences between autism and Asperger's. The biggest difference is that people with Asperger's aren't necessarily withdrawn like autistics can tend to be. People with Asperger's may be really clumsy at socializing, but that doesn't mean they don't like interacting with other people.

Exactly. If a person with Asperger's learns to manage the downsides, he or she (usually he) can be free to enjoy the upsides, and the rest of us can benefit from the unusual talents that come along with Asperger's.

Here ya go: ASPERGER's DISORDER (DSM IV Diagnostic Criteria)

I think it's really important to make note of Criterion C, which reads
The disturbance must cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. [Emphasis mine]
So we're talking about a matter of degrees, in addition to all the other symptoms.
