"Depending on when the Option I R-160A/Dash 1's begin to arrive at East New York, it's a guess that the MK R-42's on the J/Z will be around into the summer and fall of 2010. The 9943-9974 group will have CBTC which might make acceptance a tad longer to achieve, at least at first."

If that's the case, the R42's from ENY may be the last 60' SMEE cars
to retire.

I flipped burgers from May-August of 1985. Unless you've done that job, you really have no idea of the chaos created when the bun guy sets up Big Macs while the bin chief (analagous to a dispatcher) called for burgers and the grill guys (me and Jimmy R) set up burgers, as directed.

And don't ANYBODY tell me that lives weren't on the line! We had to keep those thin meat patties on the grill another 5 minutes. I'd say they were pure carbon by the time we served 'em!

Also agreed. Quite a number of Post WW2 cars had short carreers- not only the R21/22, 27/30, but look at Dave's site- many R12s were already in work service by the late 1960s, when they were only 20-something years old.

And of course, there's the Pre-WW2 Multi-Sections- 24 years (1937-1961). The R32s in fact aren't even gone quite yet...their total service will have been one of the longer ones in subway/elevated history. Only the Standards will have lasted longer, and also,, arguably, the BUs that became Qs...

George, thanks for that summary.

With Jamaica Yard getting 780 R160 cars in total, there might be a chance of seeing an R-46 on the F from time to time, even with Jamaica's R160 fleet complete.

During rush hours, the E and F need 71 trainsets altogether, which leaves only 7 spare sets (only 9% of the R160 fleet), which seems not enough even if the R160's as brand-new cars are doing well...

The cars that went early (R21/22, R27) weren't really any worse than their SMEE contemporaries, they were just not included in the massive GOH programs of the late 1980's. All the cars, even the ones in service today, suffered terribly from deferred maintenance which required either a major rebuild or retirement by the time they reached middle age.

I agree with you 100%. The R21/22/27s were no worse off, but they went to the torch, while many of their contemporaries (R26, R32, et all) went to GOH.

But for reasons right or wrong, it's a fact that the 21/22/27s died early. The 32s have lasted a LONG time.

There were 10 R-17s with factory installed A/C but it didn't work very well and the A/C units were subsequently replaced with fans. Also the H & M class K cars some of which were single units also had A/C which did work well.
