The cars that went early (R21/22, R27) weren't really any worse than their SMEE contemporaries, they were just not included in the massive GOH programs of the late 1980's. All the cars, even the ones in service today, suffered terribly from deferred maintenance which required either a major rebuild or retirement by the time they reached middle age. |
