What "majority position" do you refer to . . . ?

Sounds like you're out of your league. You should do a study of left-wing politics and come back to the discussion. (On OTChat, preferably.)

I suppose that it's pretty pointless to try and explain anything

Why don't you give it a shot for the first time in this discussion, instead of regurgitating talking points?

you've already demonstrated that you're way off on the lunatic right when you tried to justify locking up innocent people based on your misinterpretation of some archaic rules of war that certainly don't apply when dealing with accused criminals

What are you referring to?

And on a completely unrelated note, I want the fucking <font> tag back, dammit

This really does look bad for the LIRR yard. An industrial area is becoming very residential. Also, with ESA, the need for Hunterspoint Ave will come into question, and with that into question, the need for the LIC yard eventually too. This really does look bad for the LIRR yard. An industrial area is becoming very residential.

It actually gets better for LIRR if they reach the threshold where the yard's air rights are lucrative enough to develop. The danger is when they're not, as they're still not.

There's less starts in the last few quarters, but eventually as the cycle turns, MTA would be well advised to start thinking of numbers and terms ahead of that.

Also, with ESA, the need for Hunterspoint Ave will come into question, and with that into question, the need for the LIC yard eventually too.

Two issues:

1. Remember that ESA involves reconfiguration of HAROLD and creation of Sunnyside station. Also recall that HPA is falling apart. For that reason alone, I can see Sunnyside becoming the terminal for present HPA and LIC trains.

2. Unfortunately ESA doesn't afford LIRR's DE/DM30-hauled trains direct access to the new ESA terminal in New York; they can't fit in the tunnel. So they will have to be short turned shy of where most people are going. Depending on ESA changes in LIRR service patterns, that could mean Jamaica.

This may also spell doom for the LIRR Montauk branch west of Fresh Pond, but that is still far off.

Already happened, pretty much. One round trip weekdays that isn't even guaranteed to run via Fresh Pond.

The rest of the Montauk Branch in Queens east of Bushwick Junction (Fresh Pond's old station site) is needed for Freight, and very well used, because of the Bushwick Branch's junction at Fresh Pond station's location. Also of course, the Hell Gate interchange at Fresh Pond Yard. But west of Fresh Pond's old station location, the line may one day be in Question once Hunterspoint Ave isn't needed anymore, and without the yard at LIC. A lot of diesel deadheading still uses the Montauk Branch, but the need for that will dwindle if Hunterespoint Ave isn't needed anymore as a terminal with the dawn of Sunnyside and Grand Central.

Unfortunately ESA doesn't afford LIRR's DE/DM30-hauled trains direct access to the new ESA terminal in New York

Yes, the forward thinking MTA and LIRR went with diesel equipment that would never be able to fit into the existing 63rd St tunnel. They SO botched up that diesel order in the 1990's that it's almost unthinkable.

The third rail never was in the location of where the new platforms are, but how hard could that have been? It would have made for a nice flexibility to be able to send M7's there from the mainline. Although, I don't know why they would need to.

I don't know about that. Unless they turn all of them at Jamaica, the diesels have to turn somewhere. Even if they closed Hunterspoint for the sake of the new Sunnyside, the diesels will still need to turn somewhere.

Add to that Sunnyside won't be as useful for Hunterspoint riders. No ESA trains will stop there so they would still need to use the 7 for GCT. Transfer to the 7 is a local stop or a long walk to QBP.

Obviously not many of us are fans of that move.

But the fault probably goes with the designers of the 63 St Tunnel - one of the MTA's very first projects. Apparently they either forgot about non-electrified territory, or they assumed that LIRR would essentially complete electrification. The latter never happened, and still shows no signs of even happening.

Additionally, the C3s wouldn't clear, even if the DM30s had somehow been put, despite all technical difficulties, into an M1/3/7-like profile.

Perhaps the LIRR should have gone with Shoreliners instead of C3s? That would have saved the cost of building high platforms in the diesel territory as well as cleared the 63rd Street tunnel . . . (but then one has to worry about the locomotive profile)

The problem isn't the diesel equipment, it's the bilevels they decided to buy, which are too tall for the 63rd St tunnel, a tunnel that was there long before the 1990's when they ordered that equipment. While perhaps the designers of the 63rd St tunnel should have made it bigger, that's not the real problem, as back then all the equipment would have fit through anyway.

They won't need Hunterspoint Ave as the whole reason for the Hunterspoint Ave station is for it's connection to the East Side via the 7 line and Grand Central, many people then transferring to the Lexington Ave line. With ESA, they have direct Grand Central access, so the need for the 7 line will be much less. A simple transfer at Jamaica will get them to Grand Central where they will then be able to transfer to the Lexington line there.....cutting out the 7 line completely.
Hunterspoint Ave will be a ghost town once ESA opens.

You don't want the diesel riders to connect to a train coming from another branch. That would be worse than Hunterspoint and two subway stops.

Don't play games. "Selective quoting" is a common leftist tactic. Problem is, you can't backfill anything from a previous post (which we can all access) that would change any context.

Not entirely true. You forgot about Russia and Japan?

This thread is kind of a reach anyway as a railyard is but a minor prop in a discussion that has little to do with trains and all to do with peoples' philosophies about where they dwell and their surroundings.

your pal,
Fred

First they passed a stimulus bill which was way too small

$700 billion, the largest such "stimulus" in the history of the world, is "too small"?? Where is the money supposed to come from anyhow?

and then a climate change bill which didn't crack down on polluters in any meaningful sense

You are quite ignorant about the whole "climate change" thing too, I see. That's got nothing to do with pollution, but a scam dreamt up in Bonn, Germany and pushed on the world by the United Nations. Carbon dioxide is not pollution.

Obama is apparently either too cowardly or too corrupt to prosecute Bush & Company

. . . or maybe "Bush & Company" did nothing wrong after all? Get that European Union-inspired propaganda out of your head.

conservative policies have proven to be utter failures

What "conservative policies"? Like it or not, the policies that Bush implemented that turned out to be failures are the liberal-ward ones—none of the "conservative" ones that he claimed would be implemented got implemented (save some tax cuts).

it doesn't take much more than basic common sense to reinstate Glass-Steagall and bring back the 90% top marginal tax rate (policies that were successful in America's past)

90-percent top marginal tax rate was one initial cause of industrial flight to begin with. You don't realize how the left-leaning policies have eroded the USA, maybe? That's a good start. (Besides, there's nowhere to gather such tax revenue from anymore.)

institute a public health plan or single payer (policies that are successful in every other modern democracy)

There are no "modern democracies" other than in the English-speaking world. The European Union is not a democracy. These "plans", furthermore, are not successful but sinking under their own weight.

and ban torture, prosecute those who ordered it, did it, and covered for it

Nobody was "tortured", so I don't know what you're going on about.

reaffirm that anyone accused of wrongdoing is entitled to a fair trial

"Anyone"? I suppose you still don't know the difference between war and civil crime. Why don't you worry about the European Union, who has actually banned habeas corpus, and instituted anti-blasphemy laws (you can't criticize or even mock the EU), plus instituted "hate crime" laws so draconian that even making a joke that contains a hint of bigotry or racism can land you 1 to 3 years in prison?

Everything you say reads like some of the worst leftist blogs out there. Are you not able to think for yourself?

Russia and Japan were also recovering from the war.

Or did you forget that Hitler attacked and burnt much of western Russia to the ground.

Or did you forget that we bombed Japan. Most big targets were taken out before we turned our attention to Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

So were we. So was Britain.
