Thanks for the link by the way! Forgetting the problems these new residents will have on the LIRR, I have to say, I like the architecture of the new condo...bringing in features of the old powerhouse. Nicely done!

Trust me, the LIC yard is on borrowed time, unless there's a drastic shift in public sentiment.

And contrary to what people in this thread are saying about it being "irrelevant" on "who" they elect, it is highly relevant. The politicians in power deflect all responsibility, and no one is responsible for their actions. They will side with the people that spent millions on these condos, instead of the LIRR that has been there for 150 years.

Who cares what court it gets sent to? They're all packed with judges who legislate from the bench. It doesn't matter, they'll find plenty of judges who will order it closed for this or that. My money is on environmental grounds. Some activist group will do a study about the asthma rates with children living in LIC. That's usually enough. It's the tactic used to target bus depots in Harlem, despite no clear evidence that bus fumes cause asthma.

Why the LIRR will fight to the death: Where else would it maintain its diesel locos? LIC is its shop.

No, Morris Park is it's diesel shop. That being said, so long as there is diesel service to Hunterspoint Ave, the need for the LIC yard will be there. But we do have East Side Access coming, and the need for Hunterspoint Ave service will soon be at question.

This time is different: A settlement will probably ask for full funding to build a new diesel maintenance facility, along with siting and the appropriate EISes for such.

The question is: Where else woould a diesel loco shop be? In addition, and this is a correction from prior: The yard is technically not LIRR property, but a lease is pretty hard to break without cause.

What are you talking about? The LIRR's diesel shop is Morris Park near richmond Hill. No where near this yard. Why would they have to build another diesel loco shop? There is nothing wrong with the one at Morris Park.

That sounds like a homeowner out in Suffolk that I know of that bought a [reasonably priced] home, but it's right next to a bar/club restaurant. Since moving in, all he did was complain. The restaurant/club/bar has been a bar/restaurant there since the 1950's. He's also forgtting that he got the "good deal" on the house he bought because it was next to said club. If you want the low priced house (which is probably low priced for a reason), you have to take the consequences.

This is just simple reasoning for people who are confused - or who want to be confused - about the difference between political judgments and legal ones. I have cited actual legal reasoning. You have cited navel gazing.

Let's put this to the test:

Some activist group will do a study about the asthma rates with children living in LIC. That's usually enough. It's the tactic used to target bus depots in Harlem, despite no clear evidence that bus fumes cause asthma.

What's the name of the judicial decision that ordered bus depots in Harlem closed?

When politicians and bureaucrats make a policy decision, that is not something ordered by a court, e.g., no court ordered MTA to use its expensive kind of diesel fuel. Politicians in Harlem don't have the same favored policy positions as the ones for LIRR's 'third track' project. But lo, there's opposition there too.

As for what the people and politicians in Harlem do, the politicians and civic groups in my area would do the same if MTA ever wanted to site a train yard, bus depot, or anything like that nearby. You can definitely bet and win handsomely that the people and politicians in some very "rightward leaning" area would do the same.

In the 1970s, NYC wanted to build low income housing projects in Forest Hills and Baisley Park, both then middle income areas in Queens; the latter's population was mostly Black. Both communities opposed NYC's plans.

Why? Simple. Anything that lowered their property values was bad. The stuff about race, etc., that played such a prominent role, was only dressing. Same thing goes for LIRR's yard on Borden Av. It lowers residents' property values; so they reason that it must go. They don't care if your theory to get rid of it is left wing, right wing, communist, anarchist, libertarian, whatever. They just want their property values to increase.

So I think that you are ultimately just missing the big picture about what these resident want because you are more interested in seeing some vast left-wing conspiracy at work.

The problem is that you have no idea whatsoever where the center is.

No, it's YOU that has no idea where the center is. Your thought process is SOOOOOO far removed from the zero point and so far to the left, that you lost your focus on the zero point. Good god, you make JayZeeBMT look like a right wing ultrareligious right wingnut, and that is saying a lot.
If this is your grasp of "the center", you are so fallen over to the left that you can't see clearly:

http://www.subchat.com/read.asp?Id=804788

Bush was far right wing, Clinton was moderate right-wing, Bush II was extreme right-wing, and Obama is centrist on some issues and far right wing on others.

Again, if that is how you see our former and current presidents, you are FAR left wing, perhaps more far to the left than any other poster here.

Are you seriously arguing that Bush and his GOP allies in Congress did NOT expand spending at a record rate? Even John Stossel dedicated the largest chapter in his book "Myths. Lies and Downright Stupidity" to the false notion that Republicans in DC have effectively reduced spending. Bush oversaw the creation of a whole new department (Homeland Security), something not seen since Carter created the DOE in the 70's. Education spending under Bush grew at the fastest pace EVER recorded, almost 50 percent!

It's you who cannot process the facts.

Of course, anyone's view will cause what he thinks the "center" is to differ from person to person. No one is denying that. But you seem to be immune from that factor. How do you do it?

I simply noted the hypocricy of whining about this campaign to close this yard when said whiners vote for politicians who appoint judges who are pre-conditioned to side with the protesters.

Calling people who post here whiners is strong stuff.

Seems to me that you're just whining about your favored political candidates finding less favor with the electorate last time around, and working this in whether it's relevant or not to the discussion at hand.

Cite for us then the pertinent judicial decisions by these alleged "judges who are pre-conditioned to side with the protesters." I keep asking, you keep ducking the question.

You brought up the issue of asthma studies with respect to Harlem (you really meant Upper Manhattan) bus depots, but where is the judicial decision ordering these depots to shut down?

So YOU have a lot of whining, and no evidence. If you've got it, show it.

Funny thing. The earth can be flat and round at the same time. Not that I am a member of the Flat Earth Society (are they still around?).

Since when did absolute spending numbers have anything to do with left/right?

Bush spent on the war and tax cuts for the rich. If I even need to explain that such are the sole purview of the right wing, I doubt this "argument" will ever cease going around in circles.

Now if you don't mind, real life intervenes and I'll have to put aside this pointless bickering which you apparently have all day to sit around and think about.

I could think of stronger names. I'd say "whiner" is fairly benign.
