The rest of the Montauk Branch in Queens east of Bushwick Junction (Fresh Pond's old station site) is needed for Freight, and very well used, because of the Bushwick Branch's junction at Fresh Pond station's location. Also of course, the Hell Gate interchange at Fresh Pond Yard. But west of Fresh Pond's old station location, the line may one day be in Question once Hunterspoint Ave isn't needed anymore, and without the yard at LIC. A lot of diesel deadheading still uses the Montauk Branch, but the need for that will dwindle if Hunterespoint Ave isn't needed anymore as a terminal with the dawn of Sunnyside and Grand Central.

Unfortunately ESA doesn't afford LIRR's DE/DM30-hauled trains direct access to the new ESA terminal in New York

Yes, the forward thinking MTA and LIRR went with diesel equipment that would never be able to fit into the existing 63rd St tunnel. They SO botched up that diesel order in the 1990's that it's almost unthinkable.
