You don't know the story. "Hart Bus'" location was one of about FIVE proposed sites for the yard. One was in Kings Park. One was in Greenlawn. Two sites were in Smithtown, and I forgot where the other one was. |

Correct, that's the point. Traffic between Riverhead and "Central Islip" is not all that bad, even at rush hours. And in addition, construction people usually need their tools, equipment, etc, which would be next to impossible to drag onto a train. Furthermore, what do they do once they get to the "Central Islip" (or fill in a station) station to get to their construction site (without their tools no less)? |

No, train travel for construction workers that need to lug around tools, equipment, and parts make it unattractive for them. And car travel is easy between Riverhead and places like Brentwood, Central Islip, etc. It's only west of there where it becomes crowded on the roads to any real extent. |

"No, train travel for construction workers that need to lug around tools, equipment, and parts make it unattractive for them."That must be why construction workers lugging hand tools routinely used Metro-North trains to reach Manhattan over the years. Hint: Larger tools and parts are supplied by the contractor on site. The most important thing a construction worker brings with him/her is...him/her. |

Why don't they just take the train FROM the Hamptons? And "The Hamptons" is not full of "Commuters". Most of those "Hamptons" people you speak of are weekends/summer/vacation home residents who reside in Manhattan, and only come out to "The Hamptons" weekends, etc. You don't have some huge amount of "The Hamptons" commuters. |

And even better reasons to extend the juice there.Remember that third rail is LIRR's mode of electrification, so that means a costly substation every few miles. Electrifying by third rail to Riverhead and beyond would be nice, no doubt. But it is the lowest priority in terms of electrification. Also, the area around LIRR's Riverhead station may be the most decrepit of all of the areas around any of their stations. |

Ronkonkoma was only built with a small island platform! (the current middle platform). WIthin about 3-4 years, they saw what had happened, and quickly added the two outer platforms, expanded the lots, etc. Later the multi level garage came, and FURTHER expansion of the lots. And even with all that, there are still cars parked all over the grass, along the woods outside the lot, and everywhere, it's utter mayhem at Ronkonkoma. It's less mayhem-ish today than it was a couple of years ago. Back then, if I drove to the station to get the 7:32 to Penn, I'd have to park close to the woods on the east end of the big southside lot. Today I can park several rows closer to the platform. Of course, the reason for this lack of crowding is scarcely a good reason. My LIRR/NYCT blog |

It's probably faster and cheaper to take your car, even rush hours, as traffic to and from Riverhead is not all that bad. It's only west of about Islip that road traffic becomes unbarable at rush hours. Also, you haven't addressed how the people are getting from the "Central Islip" train station to the work site. |
