Private citizen wins stimulus money for quiet zone

Published: Monday, April 06, 2009
HUDSON, Ohio - A Hudson man will get nearly $170,000 in federal stimulus funds via the state of Ohio to silence train horns at a crossing near his house, the Associated Press has reported. Greg McNeil's project is one of 149 slated to receive part of the $774 million the Ohio Department of Transportation got in federal stimulus money.

McNeil filed the application on behalf of his homeowners association March 3.

"There was some pretty hefty competition," he said. "For a homeowners association to go through that process and win out is not a small victory. It's pretty significant."

Track owner Norfolk Southern has conducted a study of the crossing, saying dividers in the center of the road and circuitry upgrades to the gates would be needed to create a quiet zone. Federal law requires silenced crossings be upgraded to a higher level of safety than they were before a quiet zone is put in place.

Sounds like the whiney bitches that live along the LIRR Far Rock branch. Someones gonna get nailed by a train and then everyone will do a big 180 and be "ohnoes the horn wasn't loud enough!"

For those of you familiar with the area, if it were me on the FR branch, i'd be on the horn from West Broadway to Doughty Blvd. :)

Well, if they can get the money, why should anyone object?

Moreover, anyone who wants to spend his own money doing it or sets up a tax-exempt charity and gets donations for it, is welcome to go ahead as far as I'm concerned. The railroad would be willing to take his/her money and improve the crossing.

I agree about the Far Rock line!! People blow those crossings all the time, and yeah I seen stupidity at Doughty Blvd (Queens Native here :-)).

On the New Canaan Branch, in particular some bad crossings are Crescent Street (south of Glenbrook Station), Glenbrook Road (north of Glenbrook Station), Camp Avenue & Hoyt Street (both just less than a mile north of Springdale), and Talmadge Hill Road (at the south end of Talmadge Hill Station), where near misses and a good number of strikes due to idiocy by the local motorists and pedestrians is common, Hoyt Street being the worst, ask any New Canaan Branch-qualified engineer, and the funny thing is that people along the branch have tried to get the line to be classified a quiet zone.....not much luck yet, though!! :-D

How is that so many people end up buying houses next to train tracks and then complain about noise?

In some case (like the sign below) they slowly add trains until they are running 3 times as many trains as 20 years ago, but for the most part the trains were there first. What I think happens is that houses next to train tracks, freeways, airports, manufacturing, etc. can be slightly cheaper and people get a good deal, but don't realize the consequences until later.

Well, having grown up 9 blocks away from Runway 13L/31R at JFK International Airport, I can tell one about noise, and I would tell them simply to STFU!!! I would much rather have a rumble from a train and even an air horn (music to my ears), rather than 25 years of LOUD rumbles, soars, and even ground shocks, from 707s thru 747s, DC-8s and of course the famous Concorde, which frequently used Runway 22R for a southward direct-to-the-Atlantic flightpath away from JFK, with a nice shot of afterburner as a goodbye present, setting off every car alarm for about 2 miles around.

I saw a Concorde takeoff once. Very impressive (and you're right about the noise).

Yeah, I've experienced that as well. Jets can be unbelievably loud. People have no idea.

I'd love to live next to train tracks, although honestly living next to a grade crossing where horns sound would not be my preference.

There was a guy in Mount Tabor who complained endlessly about the train noise from the three grade crossings and two stations in the area. I haven't heard from him lately though.

The best place I went to see it was at the US Customs Building parking lot and Halmar Perishables Building near the "5-Towns" extension of Rockaway Blvd near Runway 22R/4L intersection with 31R/13L, whenever I could at about 2:00PM, British Airways Flight 4 to London-Heathrow (in radio call sign, SPEEDBIRD 4). One time, stupid ol' me decided to try and hear it out without covering my ears, and about 10 seconds of afterburner thrust had my ears hurting and ringing for 35 minutes. The threshold of Runway 22R was right near the roadway to Halmar and the Customs Building, near a lead-up taxiway called Taxiway "C" (or Taxiway "CHARLIE") so believe you me that was up-close noise like you can not ever imagine!! It was the single most impressive plane I ever saw come and go from JFK, and JFK has had a penchant for hosting some standout aircraft, like DC-3s (the equivalent of an R-10 or an F-10, a real old school relic), USAF C-5 Galaxies, C-17 Globemasters, Air Force One, the A-380, and even a USAF AWACS plane, A KC-10 Stratotanker (military fuel conversion of the DC-10) and once a F-117 Stealth Fighter.

I would love nothing more!! Since I am house hunting, I would love to find something near a stretch of railroad track here in the Tri-State Area.....even my wife wouldn't mind, she says because of me, she has come to like trains herself!!

As for the jets.... >:-p I hate the stench of jet fuel!! Too many years of noise and odor, the best South and Southwest Queens had to offer, and even a little jet fuel mixed with the "odorous pleasantry" of the then-Spring Creek (Starrett City) Landfill at low tide!! YUK!! :-P

A month ago, I investigated five or six No Train Horn crossings in and near Cohasset, Massachusetts, on the Greenbush Line. Some had dividers down a two-lane road, others did not. When a train finally came through near Pond Street, the electronic crossing bells went off so loudly I could imagine residents shaking in their beds. I bet the federal law mandates crossing bells when horns are ruled out. The amplifier used at Pond Street was a sure penalty to the NIMBY crowd.
----
Continuing further: I would hope that the Quiet Zone law would save the railroad harmless in case of a collision between train and automobile. Thwarting lawsuits would be a noble objective.
