Private citizen wins stimulus money for quiet zone

Published: Monday, April 06, 2009
HUDSON, Ohio - A Hudson man will get nearly $170,000 in federal stimulus funds via the state of Ohio to silence train horns at a crossing near his house, the Associated Press has reported. Greg McNeil's project is one of 149 slated to receive part of the $774 million the Ohio Department of Transportation got in federal stimulus money.

McNeil filed the application on behalf of his homeowners association March 3.

"There was some pretty hefty competition," he said. "For a homeowners association to go through that process and win out is not a small victory. It's pretty significant."

Track owner Norfolk Southern has conducted a study of the crossing, saying dividers in the center of the road and circuitry upgrades to the gates would be needed to create a quiet zone. Federal law requires silenced crossings be upgraded to a higher level of safety than they were before a quiet zone is put in place.
