A month ago, I investigated five or six No Train Horn crossings in and near Cohasset, Massachusetts, on the Greenbush Line. Some had dividers down a two-lane road, others did not. When a train finally came through near Pond Street, the electronic crossing bells went off so loudly I could imagine residents shaking in their beds. I bet the federal law mandates crossing bells when horns are ruled out. The amplifier used at Pond Street was a sure penalty to the NIMBY crowd.

Continuing further: I would hope that the Quiet Zone law would save the railroad harmless in case of a collision between train and automobile. Thwarting lawsuits would be a noble objective.
