What about pizza's? Papa Johns and Dominos.

...you only have to worry about those outside the New York Metro area.... In NY, they don't have a chance.

That's how Applebee's gets around.

I actually like Applebees, however, I have to say, I do agree. They were fine when it was just a few around, but now they are everywhere, and they put the other places out of business. I now have at least 7 Applebees in easy reach, at least that I know of, there are probably even more.....

I remember the sign, and one of the locations, but I'm not sure if I ever been inside.

Probably was closed and all I remember is the empty shell...before Sears took it over in the 90's. So many department stores back in the day.

AS you can see in the diagram HERE, you would have either come up outside on the NE corner of 33/7 or you would have gone down a level, through the underpass, and ended up in Penn Station. So I don't see how you would have gotten to 32 St outside.

If the Durst Organization sees merit in a new 42nd Street passageway under their buildings (the Condé Nast Tower and the under-construction Bank of America Tower) connecting the 6th Avenue IND station to Times Square, then perhaps Vornado will see similar merit in reviving the one between Herald Square and Penn Station. These days, it should improve the value of their properties.

WOW! I never knew anyone had pictures like these! I thought mine (which you just linked to on another branch of the thread) were all that there were). And this thread is over a year old!
I see Lion just made a post on that thread today, after someone else revived it 20 days ago. Lion or anyone else on this board, who is a member of that board, please post the link to my site over there, since they were not sure where exactly the tunnel was. (I'm not a member of that board).

And then someone said they saw one of the doors open?! (If you're talking about the ones to the right of the passage on the 6th Ave. side, i.e. note #1 in my drawing). I'm always trying to catch them open, but I never see anyone using them.
I see in this last picture, the stairway leading up, and the space right next to it. That must be what leads to the doors.
I wonder how the person on the other board got these pictures! I'm going to add them to my page!

Also, forgot to mention. If you think the narrowness of it is a hindrance (I wonder if it was made narrower by the mall construction, since on the other board the person said there were utility tunnels built which is what the concrete block wall on the left side is), I just walked through a NYC Subway passage just as narrow, and apparently just as long, (and nearly as dark) today: At 191st St. The #1 I was riding to work kept tripping on some junk on the tracks, so I went out to look for a cab. Never having used that station before, I head to what I could tell is the exit, and see this incredibly long narrow passage with the exit practically a point of light in the distance. I was like HOLY...! I went back, then thrn took the elevator up to the other side. All the gypsy cabs had passengers. I try to see if the train is moving yet, but it is still moving a few feet and tripping. Figuring something was probably wrong with the train, and they were going to have to be pulling portions and stuff like that; I tried the tunnel, and finally was able to share a car with someone going part of the way. (Still ended up with all 3 trips, but I have plenty of WAA in the breaks, and was actually back in place for the final run!)
So funny the 33rd St tunnel should come up today, because that's the first thing I think of whenever I see a passage like that! If they can have that open, they can have 33rd St. open, if guarded properly, like the new one under 49th between 6th and 7th.

Or like everywhere else in the world. I think of all these bigwigs in real estate (just like the leaders of every other business and govt), who with their money are flying all around the world regularly, and the new buildings they build are generally the same as what is built anywhere else in the world. In ERA slideshows of
Europe, you often see the streetcars moving past newer apartment complexes, and it's the same highrise "box" look, and that is the way they look over here. The cities have all realized that highrise projects for the poor were a mistake. So now you see nice little townhouses (with a lot of classic "pre-war" style masonry (jack arches, etc) appearing in the ghetto. But for the rich, they are still into the highrise "box" concept. As someone said elswhere in the discussion, they have to have floor to ceiling/wall to wall windows now. Their offices at corporate headquarters are the same. Same style everywhere in the world. So the world is like a giant neighborhood to these jet-set real estate moguls, and they are making it look all the same, and it is apparently nothing to them.
Meanwhile, where was all of this money 30 years ago, when they were letting all the cities rot? It's like they did that, with the inner city being full of poverty, and now all of a sudden, they decide they want the cities back, and just sweep everyone out.

Yeah, the station is nice. Though that tunnel didn't look that bright. I think the lighting might be different now. I didn't remember it being sodiums. (and because the walls are just paint, it did look dingy, and the floor dirtier).

But see what I mean? It is about just as narrow, and just as long as 33rd St! Both should have moving walkways!

And if they hadn't demolished a lot of small "historic" buildings, the city wouldn't have had any skyscrapers to begin with. If the "historic" Waldorf-Astoria hadn't been demolished, you wouldn't have had the Empire State Building.

OK, it's not QUITE an SRO ... but sure SMELLS like one. And them freaking LIGHTS when they put you on the upper floors, the windows that won't close (honk, beep, rrrrrrrrrr-rrrrrrr-honk-honk-honk all night) and NO bloody curtains, trickles for water pressure and no soap. Ah ... I get it. Somewhere along the line, WELFARE HOTELS got their CO's pulled. :(

Mildew Plaza is one of the WORST dumps I've ever been in ... and as I said earlier, DID the "Albert" in the village. Another dump, but at least it was "interesting." :)

When we came down in 2001 to spend a few days and hook up with Heypaul and a few others, we stayed at Leona Helmsley's dump on CP South. Now *THAT* was NICE! Same for the Barbarian Plaza and a few other places we've stayed over the years on "NOT the state dime" ... but man oh man ... Mildew Plaza, doing time in the State PENN and the Albert ... and some other non-descript dump by the Port Authority there ... wrecking ball can't come soon ENOUGH. :(

If PENN DUMPSTER (and Dave Barry was SPOT on) and the MILDEW PLAZA are "landmarks" then perhaps their OWNERS might be encouraged into turning them INTO one? If you've chosen to turn NYC Communist from out of nowhere, then what are *YOU* doing about the slumlords which cause visitors to your "fair city" to vomit outside the lobby and SWEAR never to come back? Isn't that a bit MORE important than preserving some used up piece of CHIT which is not ONLY an eyesore and a menace to public health (PENN was the FIRST time I've EVER been diagnosed with BED BUG BITES, MILDEW PLAZA the second) and FLEAS! Sorry, mate ... it won't work. You've just imploded your own thoughts there. :(

Only the ones of some architectural merit. I'd say an easy majority of buildings constructed 1950-2000 are of such dubious architectural merit that they deserve to be demolished. And I'd posit that a similar proportion deserved to be demolished in earlier times, just they largely have been by now.

Ah ... wish 9/11 had never happened ... I'd be going ALONG with you on this about the "bad idea" of TUBES as skyscrapers. Oh qwap ... just said it. :(

At least the "bad design" had the decency to do a "CDI" (Controlled Demolition Inc) style pancake with little damage outside its "envelope." Second time tonight I've said something that could be interpreted as "cruel but TRUE" without wanting to, but facts is facts. One of the things NEVER considered is how to safely take down an obsolete building quickly without extreme danger. WTC came down "smoothly" given all that happened because it was such a *LOUSY* design. Look at the demolition of Deutschebank next to Ground Zero as to an example of what a complicated mess taking down a skyscraper COULD have been. :(

So call me heartless (sorry, I'm ONLY talking technical fact about the buildings themselves, NOTHING else) but NYC was DAMNED lucky it was WTC that fell down rather than something DESIGNED to be SOLID. In other words, you're ABOLUTELY right. :(

Agggh ... guilt-pangs for what I've said that veered off "transit" earlier ... so let's bring this full circle, BACK on topic sorta ...

The PENN Hotel, like all OTHER "merger properties of the Penn Central" as it went through its death shudders on rails and elsewhere, I suppose SHOULD be designated a "landmark" in retrospect as a MUSEUM of just how phucked up PennCentral actually became as they died. It's EVERY bit as skanky as their Bronx Local service as well as the infamous "New Canaan Express" and other trains that passed by my house in the Bronx with flames under almost EVERY car ... AT speed. :(

So yeah, I think it SHOULD be a museum, a landmark ... but like 1723 Burnside, let's NOT let the owner rent out rooms in it, even to rats. :)

Heh. Yep ... that's the dump I remember. Only stayed in THAT dump ONCE. Went down there with a TV production crew, four rooms - only TWO of which we could use since only two had electricity and running water. So we all dragged the bedding into the hall and into the two "not so bad" rooms, lined up the matresses on the floor like some Mormon ritual/Squeaky Fromm scene, yelled out "HELTER-SKELTER!" and all crashed for five minutes before the toilet upstairs provided "the tropical mood smell" (plus rainforest) ... so we retreated to ONE room, leaving the wet matresses behind, and felt the "morning woodie that ain't mine" at 7AM. Heh.

Yeah, that's the joint ... like I said a few times already ... at least the ALBERT was "interesting" ... colorful characters MAKE life "interesting." Getting ROBBED, not so. Moo. :)

Well ... what makes Manhattan real estate the MOST interesing if the CHEAPNESS of their "acquirers." Wanna google, boy? Check out "Hotel Manhattan" which BECAME the Mildew Plaza because the phuckers were too CHEAP to replace the *M* on top! :)

Got this thing about hotels that rent by the HOUR ... could you at LEAST hand me the damned sheets to bring up to the room and "knock, knock, housekeeping!" my DAMNED self? Heh. I can at last SHAKE the damned thing out before flinging it on a mattress which has collapsed as a result of TOO many whips and chains, thanya. (grin)

Yep ... I *got* it now ... the NEW republican theme that will WORK! "Government NEEDS to get out of the people's bedroom and into the NoTel motel" ... alas, they're in toilets tapping their toes ... WITHOUT benefit of iPOD! Heh.

Eh, that's Dave Barry's schtick. Everywhere is always horrible. New York is overrun with muggers who'll kill you. Miami is overrun with drug dealers who'll kill you if you don't die from huge loads of cocaine dumped from their planes. North Dakota is overrun with wolves who will kill you. Etc, etc, etc. I am not making this up.

He *wasn't* chitting! I grew up in da Bronix ... and I've lived everywhere from Webster to Sedgewick to St Anne's to JOHNSON. Nope, as someone who';s had to ensure that dump MORE than once, the boy is being *KIND* to what he got ... he's from FLORIDA, a biological NIGHTMARE. Never ONCE has he mentioned "Junebugs" or "palmettos" for the safety of his children in front of Dade County Sheriffs. Dave's an old pal and "jammer" ... no ... I taslked to him about it ... he *MEANT* every word he said every bit as *I* can *CONFIRM* it! :(

Now that you mention it, the hotel would be perfect for a fan of Dave Barry. What else makes an incessant complainer happy? Something to complain about, of course.

your pal,
Fred

I agree with Pig to an extent, but I also agree with your post. There are a lot more buildings built prior to 1950 that have merit than after. Although I have to say some of the more recent stuff is a little bit better than the stuff from 1950 to 1980.

perhaps that's a reason why they closed.....

The real estate was more valuable than the projected profit from sales.
