Glad you arrived safely! Was the ride in from Heathrow to Gloucester Road:
a) slow and boring
b) slow and interesting
c) actually seemed vaguely fast

Thanks!

Hmmm, it was definitely interesting, I can say that! The first half seemed a bit slow (long distances between stations?), but the train seemed to accelerate quicker than NYC subway trains. But then the "express" portion didn't seem that fast at all. I thought they would open the throttle wide. I saw the district line trains along side. I also saw whatever yard/shops those were.

As you can see I got my first LU shots ever at Gloucester Road. Heathrow was a madhouse and there were announcements being made to pay for your ride at your destination. Then some employee told us the same thing. I had wanted to buy Oysters with some value and a 7-day Travelcard starting tomorrow but in the rush I just went with this "pay-later" scheme which I thought you weren't even allowed to do (20 pound fine for not having valid ticket or oyster!) and I thought you couldn't pay for a fare from within fare control. But at Gloucester i had to pay CASH fare at this window in fare control. What a rip off. Then again, if it really did save us a lot of time at Heathrow then it was worth it, since our hotel checked up right is quite early and that was a huge help to us.

So tomorrow evening I think we'll be purchasing 7-day Travelcards on Oyster.

this "pay-later" scheme which I thought you weren't even allowed to do (20 pound fine for not having valid ticket or oyster!)

don't do this on South West Trains - some friends and I asked the guy selling tickets at Southampton Airport Parkway if we could have permits to travel, as the queue was long, and our train was there. He told us just to get on it and find the guard, which we didn't as it was a 12car train and other members of staff sent us the wrong way along it. When we got off at Winchester we explained the situation and asked where we can pay for our tickets. We were directed to someone who, before we could speak, told us that we'd be paying £20. Then as we explained our story, she spouted off crap about how we made no effort to find the guard, or pay for our tickets, when we had spent the whole time from arriving at SAP to that moment trying to do so. Then she decided, to prove her point, that the guard made an announcement on the train, saying their location, which none of us had heard, or had ever heard a similar thing on any train before. Thankfully we can appeal (which shows it's not a fare, but a fine).

I had no problem on the tube from Amersham (ticket office was "closed" - guy in it told me to use my oyster, rather than buy a cheaper paper ticket, and get it refunded). I just walked on the train, not touching in, got off at Baker Street, told a guy that the ticket office was closed at Amersham and he let me through the barrier so I could buy a ticket there).

Maybe it's a side effect of privatisation - the companies care only about maximum extortion of money, rather than helping people.

Oh, and welcome to London!

Heathrow was a madhouse and there were announcements being made to pay for your ride at your destination.

Shame your destination wasn't Kensington Olympia, Goldhawk Road, or New Cross Gate (or a few other random stations IINM)...

But then the "express" portion didn't seem that fast at all. I thought they would open the throttle wide.

Hahaha!

I just went with this "pay-later" scheme which I thought you weren't even allowed to do (20 pound fine for not having valid ticket or oyster!)

In practice, it's easy to get around. There are so many plausible journeys that you can end up without a ticket legitimately inside the barriers - here's one I've done:

Ewell East, well after the ticket office had closed for the day (by about 7 hours!), so I bought a PTT (IIRC, for 25p, as I was low on change)
Sutton, same platform interchange to a Thameslink train, which happened to be right behind
King's Cross Thameslink - it was a cold day, so I went through the interchange passages to exit via the tube station, who let me out so that I could finally buy my ticket to Leicester from St Pancras station.

Of course, I could have been lying and not actually wanting to go to Leicester (who would?), but King's Cross - St Pancras Underground station couldn't really do much but let me out. Because LU is a bit primitive, they couldn't even sell me the right ticket.

and I thought you couldn't pay for a fare from within fare control.

You generally can't on LU, but can on NR (ex-BR), but there are exceptions both ways.

So tomorrow evening I think we'll be purchasing 7-day Travelcards on Oyster.

Remember to keep your receipt.

Awf coss, one could keep the long "aw", so long as one went to Awksford.

But seriously, in the 19th Century railway timetables included placename abbreviations like:

Glo'ster (Eastgate)
Le'ster (London Rd)

These were primarily to fit into columns, but Glo'ster and Le'ster (and for that matter the unattested *Wo[o]'ster, *Al'ster, and *Bi'ster) do actually indicate the pronunciation quite well.

For the next stage in our spelling reform, Plaistow can become Plaaaaaaaa'stow, and Dulwich and Woolwich can become Dul'ich and Wool'ich.

I have a question for you or anyone with knowledge of the LU. There are a couple of sections where the London Underground shares trackage with Silverlink lines, the lines being the Bakerloo from Queens Park to Harrow & Wealdstone and on the District Line from Richmond to Gunnersby. How does this all work out when it comes to fares? This shared trackage does not occur on our subways so it is a very unfamiliar situation to me.

And about the below picture at Stratford, one could transfer from a NR train to the Central Line and vice-versa at no cost?

Enjoy your trip! And don't forget to ride the Bakerloo. That's the nicest stock in the whole Underground (with the possible exception of the rehabbed D78's and the 1995 stock on the Northern).

Are you going to Abbey Road? Use Jubilee, get off at St Johns Wood, walk down Grove End Road (?) and it's at the bottom of the hill on the right.

Since most people are using zone based tikcets, it doesn't matter which company's line you ride on. You can use any line or bus in the zones wriiten on your ticket(with some exceptions).

Before that, it was more complicated. In the section you mentioned (the Bakerloo from Queens Park to Harrow and on the District Line from Richmond to Gunnersbury), if you didn't travel beyond the border stations, you paid a BR ticket even if you ride an LT train. If you continued into LT lines, you paid a combination BR/LT ticket.

In other locations like Stratford - Liverpool St. a LT ticket was valid on both BR and LT.

Paying excess fare at your destination was also common back then.

Gloucester Road used to have the airport bus terminal. I took my first step on the ground of London there and then we rode the Picadilly to Russell Sq. (to the hotel).

I was only six, but I still remember how you could peek through the opening and see red trains (probably CP/CO stock) running under the terminal.

It wasn't, but I wanted to get back. I have an NR Young Person's Railcard, so get 33% off an off peak one day travelcard. Because the tube guys aren't bright I got zone A-D thrown in, but even without that, it's cheaper. I paid £4.80, whereas an off-peak Oyster return via zone 1 would be 25% more than that.

Also, I would have capped my oyster anyway. I can't remember if I went on any non-Oyster pre-pay routes (I think I did New Cross - Charing Cross), but I also would have had less of a problem with that.

What's so special about Hyde Park Corner?

It's the first place a train from that platform can reverse. In this case, it's not a particularly useful sign.

Some of them are useful though - for instance, there's one on the southbound Northern Line Charing Cross Branch platform at Euston that reads something like: "All trains go to Charing Cross, Waterloo, and Kennington".

I was looking to verify that. Somewhere there is a track map of the Piccadilly, but I lost it can’t find it again. Do you have that bookmark?

Those would make good strip-maps! Knowing which side the platform's on and where there are cross-platform interchanges is useful information.

I think that a sign saying "All trains serve Kennington, but only some continue to Morden" would be much more useful.

Ah, a Travelcard. You didn't say that the first time!

Do Young People also get discounts on Oyster travel?
