Since most people are using zone based tikcets, it doesn't matter which company's line you ride on. You can use any line or bus in the zones wriiten on your ticket(with some exceptions).

Before that, it was more complicated. In the section you mentioned (the Bakerloo from Queens Park to Harrow and on the District Line from Richmond to Gunnersbury), if you didn't travel beyond the border stations, you paid a BR ticket even if you ride an LT train. If you continued into LT lines, you paid a combination BR/LT ticket.

In other locations like Stratford - Liverpool St. a LT ticket was valid on both BR and LT.

Paying excess fare at your destination was also common back then.
