this "pay-later" scheme which I thought you weren't even allowed to do (20 pound fine for not having valid ticket or oyster!)

don't do this on South West Trains - some friends and I asked the guy selling tickets at Southampton Airport Parkway if we could have permits to travel, as the queue was long, and our train was there. He told us just to get on it and find the guard, which we didn't as it was a 12car train and other members of staff sent us the wrong way along it. When we got off at Winchester we explained the situation and asked where we can pay for our tickets. We were directed to someone who, before we could speak, told us that we'd be paying £20. Then as we explained our story, she spouted off crap about how we made no effort to find the guard, or pay for our tickets, when we had spent the whole time from arriving at SAP to that moment trying to do so. Then she decided, to prove her point, that the guard made an announcement on the train, saying their location, which none of us had heard, or had ever heard a similar thing on any train before. Thankfully we can appeal (which shows it's not a fare, but a fine).

I had no problem on the tube from Amersham (ticket office was "closed" - guy in it told me to use my oyster, rather than buy a cheaper paper ticket, and get it refunded). I just walked on the train, not touching in, got off at Baker Street, told a guy that the ticket office was closed at Amersham and he let me through the barrier so I could buy a ticket there).

Maybe it's a side effect of privatisation - the companies care only about maximum extortion of money, rather than helping people.

Oh, and welcome to London!
