even if I didn't need a travelcard, it's cheaper than a return to zone 1 on Oyster!

Young Persons get discounts on Oyster if 1)they are under 16 and have a special Oyster card (effectively child rate)
2)they study at a school/college/university inside the M25, order a special oyster card, and even then it's only on seasons (ie a week or longer) that discounts apply.

Students who live in London, but study elsewhere are ineligable for discounted tickets.

National Rail offers, for £20, a railcard to under 26s that gives 33% off the bearer's NR tickets for a year. Rules apply about off peak if below a certain price, etc. As LU has never really been integrated with the rest of the country's rail, the only tickets that can be brought from LU ticket offices using the railcard are all-zone (1-6), one-day, off-peak travelcards, and extensions for further out on the met (and any NR fares they are willing to offer, like to the stations with direct NR trains).

one other side effect of the LU/NR split is that I can't buy a ticket to Amersham at most NR stations (the exceptions being few in number) - any other station on the NR network is fine (with the obvious exceptions of other Met/NR stations, and possibly Gunnersbury + Kew Gardens) from any NR ticket office. For instance, I can buy a single from any NR station to Great Missenden, but I can't buy a single from any NR station that doesn't have an LU ticket office or a direct train to Amersham. I can't even buy a ticket to Zone D unless i'm in London, maybe even only if i'm on LU or at Marylebone NR.

It's a disgrace, the only bonus is that London only costs about 60p more to get to (via one day travelcard with railcard) than Aylesbury (cheap day return with railcard).
