Heathrow was a madhouse and there were announcements being made to pay for your ride at your destination.

Shame your destination wasn't Kensington Olympia, Goldhawk Road, or New Cross Gate (or a few other random stations IINM)...

But then the "express" portion didn't seem that fast at all. I thought they would open the throttle wide.

Hahaha!

I just went with this "pay-later" scheme which I thought you weren't even allowed to do (20 pound fine for not having valid ticket or oyster!)

In practice, it's easy to get around. There are so many plausible journeys that you can end up without a ticket legitimately inside the barriers - here's one I've done:

Ewell East, well after the ticket office had closed for the day (by about 7 hours!), so I bought a PTT (IIRC, for 25p, as I was low on change)
Sutton, same platform interchange to a Thameslink train, which happened to be right behind
King's Cross Thameslink - it was a cold day, so I went through the interchange passages to exit via the tube station, who let me out so that I could finally buy my ticket to Leicester from St Pancras station.

Of course, I could have been lying and not actually wanting to go to Leicester (who would?), but King's Cross - St Pancras Underground station couldn't really do much but let me out. Because LU is a bit primitive, they couldn't even sell me the right ticket.

and I thought you couldn't pay for a fare from within fare control.

You generally can't on LU, but can on NR (ex-BR), but there are exceptions both ways.

So tomorrow evening I think we'll be purchasing 7-day Travelcards on Oyster.

Remember to keep your receipt.
