It could be said of any hobby that is exceptionally amenable to solitary activity. This does not mean the hobby MUST be pursued in a solitary fashion, only that among others, it attracts people who have difficulty in activities or hobbies requiring a lot of interaction. |

Growing up in Greenpoint, I had the option of the taking R16's on the LL or R10's on the GG. Some choice! I actually preferred the GG with the 10's because if nothing else they moved a hell of lot faster (and as much noise as they made, you KNEW you were moving). As a bonus you had the super wide headlights and the conductor hanging between the cars to open the doors on the 10's! Sure they were trashed, but no worse than say the cars on the west side IRT. |

"I've heard it's a problem in London."No it isn't, at least to anywhere near the degree that it was in NYC in the 1980s. We get a little graffitti on the trains now and then, though on the whole the Underground is pretty clean these days. More on trackside walls and structures (on open-air sections of lines) and on suburban rail lines. It's virtually impossible to walk into deep tube tunnels without getting killed, and anyway they are unlit, so any 'artistry' put up there would be pretty much invisible. Not much on suburban trains, although I have seen some on brand-new trains painted allover white (a bit inviting for the graffitti artists, that). Scratchitti is a problem on the Thameslink trains I sometimes use. Not too serious in other European cities I have been to - in Paris, the Metro trains and statiions are pretty clean, though there is a surprising amount of graffitti on the tunnel walls between stations. The RER in Paris is worse than the Metro. But I've never seen anything in Europe that is anywhere near as bad as those NYC trains were 20 years ago. |

Better than that - a downtown 2/3 comes into 96th with the last car a dark car. The doors open and this cloud of smoke comes out! I get on (I loved riding the dark cars - there were always plenty of seats and you could see in the tunnel) along with some tourists. There's maybe 5 other people on the car and these tourists are standing up, petrtified! |

Some times, only 3 or 4 door leafs actually opened - Speed, as in lack of. They were a rolling delay - Filth. None got exterior paintjobs after the late 70's - Floors. Ripped up, usually patched with asphalt - Windows were often rusted open, or shut. If they were open, better not sit down during a fierce rainstorm R16's always had problems, more so than any other car type I can remember. Those that operated them can give more specific information on what the problems were. All I know is that the GE units (6400-6499) were the worst of the bunch (all were gone by 1983). |

There was one day in early 1981 that is considered as the day that the system hit rock bottom. It was an extremely cold Monday morning, around 15° I believe. The TA could not get many of it's trains up and running that morning due to the cold. I was taking the 'F' to work from 18th Avenue in those days. After freezing may ass off for about a half-hour on the platform, a grafitti-covered, beaten-up'B' train limps into the station. Lights, but zero heat. The summer before was the R44 crisis which took many of the wonderful R46s off of the 'F', replacing them with old hot R10s. The bad old days indeed.Once the 'F' got all it's R46s back serice was back to it's usual good level. I knew folks from Bensonhurst who would take the B8 bus to McDonald Avenue just to avoid the Sea Beach and West End lines. No metrocard back then so it was a second fare. |

The line that freaked me out the most was the Livonia El. It was SO bad over there back then in the late 80's. I never went back again until Peggy had the Brooklyn IRT tour, and that was the first time I went back. i think that was in 2002. i couldn't believe how much better it got over there. It's still not heaven, but it's not hell anymore either. I figured it must have improved, as I was already used to the area along the Bway el getting cleaned up too.Truth be told, in the late 80's, I was terrified riding the J between Myrtle and Bway Junction. You would tighten up everytime the doors opened at those in between stations. Then I didn't ride there for a few years, and the first time back, perhaps after about 5 years absense between 1994 and 1999, and I couldn't believe the difference! I actually rode with my cousin that day, expecting to see the usual "Berlin in 1945" look. We got on at BJ, and proceded to the side doors to look out. We were both quiet. The train stopped at Chauncey, the train stopped at Halsey, and then Gates...the doors closed there, and he said, "Do you notice something"? I said, "Yeah! There's hardly any burnt or abandoned buildings anymore!" I figure if they were able to clean up Broadway, anything has hope. |

I distinctly remember a story, I think in the Voice, back in the 80's about the Livonia el called 'The Beast'. Back then, I would ride pretty much all of the lines including the Broadway el - no problem, but I have only recently ventured out onto that line for the first time! (this was due in part to moving out of the city to the midwest in 1991 and only just moving back last year - riding out to Livonia wasn't too high on my priorities when I came back to visit...) |
