Mamdani, G to Forest Hills on weekends thread |
|
|
Posted by LuchAAA on Wed Feb 11 22:15:43 2026 linkWe've been over this many many many times. Weekend GO's often reduce capacity, making it impossible to run two local services on Queens Blvd during weekends. Realistically, the G would be able to go to Forest Hills 2 weekends in a row, followed by two weekends when it can't. This will make passengers think, "the G is always cancelled on weekends". Anyway, local R service during weekends is terrible. Trains are always late and overcrowded. There must be a way to run extra R's between CTL and City Hall because Queens and Manhattan is where most of the ridership is. This is what Mandani really needs to look into. |

And that is going to be a real problem until CBTC is fully implemented. It's been well noted part of the problem of this is that the area between Court Square and Queens Plaza is not CBTC. That likely needs to be upgraded first before they can do it. |

Even with CBTC in place, weekend GO's between Queens Plaza and Continental would make regular weekend G service in Queens a challenge. The G would be cancelled regularly. Weekend G's would be able to go to Continental as often as Olog-hai has sex in a year, which means almost never. But this is the OTchat aspect of this thread. |

So if all the trains in one direction E, F, G, R, had to share a single track they should be capable of 10 min headways . Why should I believe that is insufficient service? |

Merging three services onto one track (each direction) is difficult. We see this all the time. For example, when all Manhattan-bound trains run express from Continental to Roosevelt, there is drama. Delays. This is because the R has to be merged onto the express track, and the E and F get plugged up behind it. Then time is lost communicating with customers meaning trains may dwell in the station longer. And this is normal with E, F and R's on weekends. Imagine adding another service, G's, and it would be a disaster. I have wondered how things would work out if only the G went to Continental on weekends and the R from 95 to Whitehall. I think G trains would be on time far more often than R trains. I think customers at local stops between CTL and Roosevelt would not mind because many are just trying to get to the express stop, Roosevelt, for the E or F or 7. But some are going through to Manhattan via 60th Street tunnel to Lexington and this is a big reason why my idea could not happen. |

G to CTL isn't happening CBTC and GO'S or not.Not as long as Janno Lieber is in charge. And he isn't going anywhere as long as Hochul is governor He has made his decision by purchasing 80 more open gangway cars which will be enough to make the G between Church & CSQ 100% open gangway. Mark my words: TWU vs. MTA contract talks are coming soon. I am 100% sure that management will demand 24/7 OPTO G. This will kill the idea of G service to CTL when the M isn't running because the G would need more than a 300' train. Many will say that the G needs longer trains NOW between CSQ & Church. I agree 100%. But Janno has already hyped that the open gangways have higher capacity as the area in between cars on a conventional train is taken up by passengers on an open gangway train. |

Here’s a way to get the G back to Continental full time.N all times except late nights goes back to the 2010-2016 pattern Ditmars to Stillwell via Bridge local north of Canal Street. R all times except late nights runs local between Ditmars and Bay Ridge via Montague Street tunnel and would share equipment with the N by having a common north terminal and be a branch of the N in order to resolve yard access issues. W is a late night only service that runs the current late night N local between Ditmars and Stilwell via the Montague Street Tunnel. Basically the W as you know it is gone and all late night via Montague Street N trains become W trains. So the N R and W all share equipment. G all times except late nights to Continental, even if there is a GO and only M trains run to Continental, they would still have weekday service to Continental. M all times except late nights to Continental with short turn M trains going between Continental and 2nd Avenue if needed. F via 53rd Street all times except late nights This can be sold as a deinterlining initiative. |

I considered that if it would improve service to local stations between Continental and Roosevelt. The G to Forest Hills on weekends could improve service because there would be less delays. Why less delays? Because the R goes to Manhattan and Brooklyn via BMT lines that rack up delays all the time. All the time. The G sees less delays and would provide better service to the local stations along Queens Blvd. But you're right about 11th Street cut. |

No you can run the M via 63rd Street all times except late nights and the F express all times via 53rd Street except late nights. Astoria N trains can get pretty crowded on Weekends with how gentrified the area is. M trains going deeper into Manhattan from North Brooklyn would be a boon. |

Since many aspects of transit service are affected by politics, then transit related political topics, definitely DO belong in either Subchat or Buschat as appropriate. As an example, it was NYC’s Mayor LaGuardia who was responsible for forcing Third Ave RR to get rid of its streetcars and cancelling the order of an additional 500 PCC trolleys for Brooklyn. |

I see many posts by Mamdani-haters saying, he’s grandstanding because the Mayor does not control the MTA. For sure he doesn’t, but politics is the art of persuasion. He has votes on the MTA board, plus the ear of his new buddy the Governor, plus the “bully pulpit” of galvanizing public opinion. It’s well within his job description to advocate for this transit improvement. |

The 11th street cut is a nice to have, but is something that should only be used as a reroute. Especially as it was built during a time when the 63rd street tunnel and queens boulevard connection to the 63rd street tunnel and the Chrystie street connection didn’t exist. The R and M run mostly a parallel route in Manhattan, so parallel that the old M6 and M7 routes used the R route southbound and present M route northbound on surface streets. So it’s not that much of a stretch to have the G run all times except nights to continental and if you want Manhattan service to have the M run to continental all times except nights with no service on the 11th street cut except for reroutes due to emergencies or GOs. It can be sold as an improvement for north Brooklyn. If the Manhattan trains get so crowded, at least the queens boulevard line has express buses and the LIRR that compete with it to absorb the excess demand due to any crowds |

There's quite a lot to like about this idea. Several conflict-points eliminated. I'm not sure if Astoria can handle relaying all of the Ns and Rs but 96th/2nd is always a backup. The biggest casualty is for direct Queens Blvd local to Lexington Ave riders as they'd have to cross the platform at Queens Plaza and then also take a longer walking transfer to get to what would only be the 6 train at Lex/53rd. But if everything is moving (i.e. the G train actually comes frequently and reliably) and the Broadway Line is mostly cleared up (minimal delays to the Q/R when the N switches tracks) it could be an overall win. |

You would also have the M more often running local via 63rd and you can get off at Lexington and 63rd and make a street transfer to the 4/5/6 at 59th Street. You can also take the G to Court Square and transfer to the 7 if you need Grand Central or you could take the M to Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street and transfer to the Q if you need Union Square.I think Astoria can handle the capacity since it handles the N and W right now and you can always have trains run express between Queensboro Plaza to terminate at Astoria Boulevard then turn around there using the center express track and start there then run express to Queensboro Plaza to mitigate capacity issues. |

I think the idea of locals is to feed the express stops. Or something like that.Have you ever waited at a local stop like 63rd/Rego Park and it feels like locals are outnumbered by express trains 10-to-1? Well it isn't that high, but that's how it feels. Passengers get anxious and feel like being on a local won't get them where they're going and will always hop off at the express stop. |

The 8th Ave. line was built to discourage local-to-express transfers. No express stops down CPW between 125th and 59th. Only a bare minimum of local stops south of 59th. The reasoning was, if you boarded a local south of 125th, by the time you got to 59th St., theer would be no advantage in changing to an express. |

Its been tried before with the introduction of the W train which ran from QBP to Ditmars as express back around 2000. The biggest problem is Ditmars has only 2 tracks making for train bottlenecks making that service impractical. Turning them at Astoria Blvd will need switches Installed which most likely never happen. |

However, as I pointed out in another post passengers boarding at stations south of 59th Street (back when CPW lcls terminated at Hudson Term) bound for Bkln would still have to change at Canal for an express. Going the other way, passengers boarding a N/B C at stations between 59th and 125th would still have to change either at 125th or 168th for an A of they were going north of 168th. |

There is no perfect design. however, a mix of local and express is vastly better than either all local or all express. BART and WMATAexemplify the cheap product at DoD prices resulting in local or express only. The original IRT and IND trunk lines w/ four track mainlines are still the best. |

You can do that, but since all these express trains work go back and forth on the same center track, there would have to be at least a 20-minute interval between trains. Hardly worth it. |
