The WF R-33s and R-36s in the Bluebird scheme were my favorite cars as a kid (prior to the R-40 slants in their original configuration). I always loved catching them as I rode with my parents on the GCP on the tracks over Roosevelt Avenue or catching them on the Queens side of the 59th St. Bridge (as we called it) after or before we drove over it.

Many fond memories of me waiting outside the gate as my father would park in the Corona Yard (he worked Pelham and Woodlawn when I was a kid but then went to Flushing just before I hit my teens the last 10+ years of his career). We would then take the 7 from Willets Point to Grand Central and transfer to the 4 to Yankee Stadium to catch the Yanks and do the reverse home.

Hats off to whoever thought of that paint scheme, be it someone from the TA or St Louis Car. Is showed some imagination for a change, not having equipment delivered in drab olive that after awhile look like the creatures that live where they run

I wonder why the TA went with the wide picture windows for the R33/36wf,but not with the mainline versions of those cars.

The explanation back then was that most of the #7 route is above ground (about 75%). Even though almost all lines have outdoor sections, most of their routes are underground.

All subsequent car orders included picture windows.

Thank you. I'd heard that the first R33WFs entered service on this date- but I wondered if it was just a few of them in a train of R12/14/15s..

Now I know they made up a full World's Fair train.

Back then as a kid I didn't realize these cars were mostly the same as the earlier version R26 and R28 and the 27/30s but smaller, just with nicer paint and picture windows. When they repainted them as redbirds the fantasy was shattered. They really were the same.

I rode them to the Worlds Fair a few times, but mostly took them out to Shea to see the Mets, but took them once out to Shea to see The Beatles!

Before I knew about contract numbers, I knew the fleet by fleet number. So I was confused to see cars on the 1 or 3 painted red (like the actual R-29/R-33 MLs) but numbered in the sequence for the 7 line cars. Obviously, this was before the hideous Ronan colors (silver/blue) desecrated the non-stainless steel cars 😐 (I didn't mind it on the R-40M/R-42/R-44/R-46, but I wasn't sad when it did not appear on later cars)

You are referring to the R36ML cars which were numbered 9524-9557 and all of them had Westinghouse propulsion systems like the R36WF cars 9346-9523. They were the least numerous A division SMEE cars. I believe that 9542-9543 is the only R36ML pair still in existence. These cars were moved around between the 1,3,6, and 7 lines during the time they ran in revenue service.

By the time the R-33s were being delivered, th “normal” color for NYCTA equipment had become Tartar red which was what the World’s Fair fleet was supposed to be originally.

I lkiked it when thr R--20s were repainted in that scheme and was disappointed when the TA opted for Tartar red for the R-27/30s rather that the racing stripe scheme.

The way it was explained to me was that thr R-33 singles were under the R033 contract but built with R-36 parts which of course would include the picture window framing. That was done to provide Flushing Line passengers with a preview of what their new cars would look like so they wouldn't have to wait until the R-33 delivery was finished. When the entire Flushing Line fleet was complete, the R-36 MLs were then built with the parts including windows that were left over and originally intended for the R-33 singles.

The 36 ML were given the treatment that the R33 Mainline cars got.

I don't see the reason for the switch up.
The Whole R36 contract could have gone right to the Flushing Line, instead of splitting it up.
The 33ML could have gone the same way.
What caused the changes?
The World's Fair.. the need to replace the Flushing line equipment and provide longer trains for service increases.

The need to replace the mainline prewar cars became apparent, the R12/14/15 to the mainline would help expedite the process.

The TA wanted to get the new World’s Fair cars out to the riding public ASAP so rather than make them wait until the entire R-33 Fleet was completed, the TA had St Louis Car manufacture the last of the R-33s with the R-36 parts which were already available for use.

I got that.
Back then, it was pretty common for the TA to have multiple subway car orders being built at the same time.

The R40a and the 42s are prime examples of this, along with the the R38 and 40.

The strike at the STL plant forced that overlap, and caused a cascading effect on the rest of the upcoming orders.

The R10, 12,and 14 were all being built at the same time, while the 15 came hot on the heels of the last 14.

The R26, 27,28,29,30,33,36,32,were All being churned out back to back from 1959 to 1965.

The 38s paused the output for a bit, only to be thrown right back.. 66/67/68/69 saw the delivery of the R38, 40,40a,42.

1970 brought the First R44, which was rejected, but the program wasn't set back, since they returned in 1971..
Hot on the heels was the lookalike cars, R46, which were delayed for several years until 1975..breaking up the record for consecutive delivery of newly contracted subway cars.

It's been downhill ever since.

When they (R27/R30) were new, they were shiny dark green. They quickly acquired a coating of brake dust and other dirt that made them a dull dark gray color.

I was a "Eastern Division spawn".
Home line was the QJ,KK,M.

By the time the 27/30 reached us, they were not so shiny, and due to steel dust, lack of washing, appeared "black".

Didn't know until later that they were Supposed to be a dark green.
I really liked them, until they were moved to the C line.
After that, it seemed like they lost their luster, and died an ignoble unwarranted slow death.

They never looked right on the IND. They went to die on the C line. First the GE R27's, then the Westinghouse R27's, then the Westinghouse R30's, finally the R30 Redbirds.

I operated R27/30's on the D fairly often as I had picked jobs there and the B and C a few times on overtime.

They were decent cars except the R27 GE's. Plenty of dead motors and motors "dropping out". Likely that's why they did the overhaul on the GE R30's to extend their life a bit.

They filled the hole in Flushing line service, for the moment.
The design was unusual, as it incorporates a lot of the design points of the R11,12, and the 14s and introduced the complete turtle back roof to the the system.

These cars were solid as solid could be.
I pitied the railcar that picked a fight with these behemoths.

The 15s also introduced Air Conditioning to the system, but for some reason, always seemed to clog up.. And drip water on the passengers.

What I liked about the cars, were the porthole windows on the doors,a design only seen on the R11, and never used again after the 15s.

Seems like the Board of Transportation wanted to push the envelope with car design, but not too much, given the fact that they went back to basics with the next round of contracts.. And repeated the process until designing the R44.

The Only real change in appearance that was noticeable, was the Worlds Fair cars, the R32s, and the R40(a radical departure from the standard, but retained the basic dimensions).

The 15s were the most unique of the post war equipment.. And it's unusual appearance only made us love them even more.

As a footnote, the 15s brought the CRs of the day inside the car. Door
Controls were placed in the cabs, instead of outside on a platform between cars.. Very dangerous for the CR, especially when it rained, bad weather and Winter played an ugly tune.

Overall, I had a love hate type thing going on with the R15.
I hated to see them coming, but loved riding them.

I Did see, And ride 27s on the D a few times.

And you are right.. The 27/30 did not seem to fit the IND, the way the 32s just blended in.
The Queens IND should have been used to them, since they were in RR service for a while before the Chrystie st swap.

However, I never saw them in E service or F service.

That's how I feel as well0 the R27/30s were BMT local cars. Of course I know that they ran on just about every lettered route, but they just seem perfect, somehow, for BMT local service, and out of place anywhere else.

Only one R-15 had air conditioning and like the 10 R-17s that had A/C it wasn’t a success. As for the color of the R-15, the original color was a lot darker shade of red actually a maroon.

I’m aware of that but at some point the BMT painted its cars a lighter sort of "golden pancake" brown. The only thing I don’t know is the exact color the Multis were when brand new.
