My first ride was on a lowly Sunday TT 4 car local to 36th Street, then transfered, though to what I don't remember.

hose numerals that spelled out car numbers on the front are one of those "lost fonts" you don't see anymore. Those, and the numerals on the fronts of 'Fishbowl' buses and Flxible New Looks, and all the type widths on the Transign mylar roll signs. They were as much a part of New York as those they were affixed to.

Sad, but true.

They lined up squarely with the side windows, much the same as on the R-36s and R-38s. And, for that matter, the original doors on the R-40s and R-42s.

The Triplxes were about as fine a piece of equipment ever designed. They were pulled much too soon, IMHO - only because the R-32s were being delivered so rapidly they had to make room. That and the fact that the TA was hellbent on getting rid of anything "nonstandard" such as articulating units. Unlike the R-16s, which were mercifully put out of their misery, the Triplexes were still running like tops when they went to premature slaughter despite receiving very little maintenance. They could easily have lasted another ten years, if not longer.

Some of the R-6s lasted 40 years. I loved the R-1/9s for their marvelous symphony of sounds. I favored them over the BMT standards only because they had front route and destination signs - something I had gotten used to by the time I saw the standards for the first time.

My opinion is that due to the heavy weight of the triplexes, especially at the articulated spot, put a lot of stress on the elevated structures of the Astoria & West End lines.

The spring-loaded hold straps on the R32s were elegant compared to those in previous models. Also the light-blue/gray/cream interiors with yellow lettering were sacrificed before or during rebuild. And the "Built by the Budd Company" manufacturer plate below the red emergency brake handle..

I seem to remember that in the higher numbered cars, about 3800 and up, on the vertical rubber edge of the doors, there was a narrow colored strip. That too was a nice touch.

The should have scrapped the worst R1 to R4's to "make room" and put the Triplexes on the D train, then a Culver - Concourse service, and near BMT maintenance.

Those cars were even newer than the triplexes.

The problem is that once the R32s came in all of the pre-war cars started to look really old, with their dim lighting, smells and noises. I remember transferring from the Sea Beach to the West End at 62nd/NU and being surprised that a Triplex pulled in. I thought they were long gone by then, but I was only about 10 and a long time was 3 months. What I did know is that they were no longer on the Brighton. That was the last time I rode one until a few years ago when they appeared at Brighton Beach for the Parade of Trains. It was eerie because I didn't think there were any still in existence, never mind in working order.

They were newer, but in worse shape. Two years later in 1966, the IND had a meltdown, and had to take unrefurbished Standards off the scrap line and back fill.

#3360-3361, along with R-32's #3350-3353, #3356-3357, were part of that eight-car consist in the actual ceremonial initial run of them going down the New York Central tracks (now Metro-North) from Mott Haven Yard to Grand Central Terminal. The date was September 9, 1964.

#3356-3357 was retired and removed from TA property many years ago, but the other six exist today in 2022.

And Jamaica Yard was especially hardest hit, to the point where all the new R-38's from St. Louis Car had to be assigned there when they arrived. (Ironic that R-32's outlived the cars built from then to R-44.)

If you look at railcar development after WWII, it seems that the industry had decided against articulation for future rolling stock. That is why only the first Chicago PCC rapid transit cars (Based on the BMT Bluebird) were articulated and the next order of new cars were in married pairs.

Only 20 R-38s were on TA property when the Jamaica Yard Crisis hit. They were pressed into service with one trainset on the Ethel and the other on the Fred. Then 32 R-16s were borrowed from ENY and assigned to the GG with new signs spliced in. And a group of condemned BMT standards were given a last-minute stay of execution, pulled off the scrapline and sent back to revenue service on the Broadway-Brooklyn local with the S for Scrap painted over.

We actually rode on an R-32 TT one day after my very first subway ride, which was on July 21, 1965. We went on the Circle Line on the morning of the 22nd (the very same as Transit Day at the World's Fair), and afterwards visited my father's cousin in Brooklyn, who lived just off the 71st Ave. station on the West End. I'm tempted to say we took an N back to Brooklyn and changed to a TT at 36th St. I vivdly remember the West End line. The previous evening, we were at my father's cousin's house and all evening long I heard trains pulling in and out of 71st St. Music to my ears. The seeds of my love affair with the NYC subway system had been planted.

No, I was not. I just simply observed the train at one station, 86th Street-2nd Avenue, and taking my cellphone images there capturing solely #3360 at the north end going NB at 4:02pm, SB at 4:13pn. Fully packed train as I had witnessed that afternoon, so there was no need for me to take a ride inside it.

The run was between Brighton Beach and 96 Street-2 Avenue. Is that correct?

Absolutely correct, despite the side signs being set for the uptown designation of 57th Street-7th Avenue. The countdown clocks confirmed the 96th/2nd-Brighton Beach "Q" routing, and I was there at 86th-2nd between 3:15pm and 4:15pm.

The dim lighting and funky smells make the pre-war cars seem much older than even the R10s, 12s and 14s, even though in the case of the R9s, it wasn't that big a gap in years.

The difference, to non-railfans, between an R46 and an R179 are a lot less. WE know they're significant, but others might not. But a Triplex and an R27/30 are obviously different to anyone.
