It was on the Manhattan Bridge. All that shiny metal set off by the rich blue doors was really stunning, especially compared with the appearance of the rest of the fleet in the mid 60s (R-11s notwithstanding).Rebuilds helpfully added air conditioning but sacrificed the distinctive NYCTA metal spring-loaded hold straps. Also, the blue doors were sacrificed, and the bonnets were destroyed--the R-38 rebuilds were done far more attractively--but the R-32s remained a great fleet. Too bad they didn't let them get to year 60! So close! No more railfan window anywhere. We've also lost rear windows in buses, but that's another disappointment. |
