You are correct. Track 4 connects to the 7th Ave. line and track 1 to the Lexington Ave. local track south of Grand Central. Changing out a train set is a pain in the butt and involves staging the new one just before the turnout and performing a reverse move against traffic to get it on to the line after the old one exits. The old track 3 connected to track 1 via a crossover but that has been permanently removed and the track way used for the passageway connecting to the B/D/F/7 station at 42nd-Bryant Park.

Hidden from view for the time being at Times Square, and there is now a big wall, plus some scaffolding, separating Track 4 and what was Track 3, now part of an enlarged platform.

And it is no different in terms of being a PITA than it ever was. At least though in the past if one train was OOS the other 2 could operate. Now you are left with just one.

First thank you so much for providing this video. Now that the shuttle is now 6 cars, does that mean it is no longer OPTO? Since the maximum length a subway train can be for OPTO is 4 cars. Also when the video was taken, is that the typical ridership at the time it was recorded, or is ridership still that far down?

I don't see how you can start on the east side of 5th Av and walk underground to 8th Av. The entrance to the #7 station is on the west side, next to the library. Once you enter there you can indeed walk underground to 8th Av.

If you enter the subway on 42nd St east of 5th Av, you'll be in the Grand Central shuttle station, and you can take the train to Times Square, but you can't walk underground to there.

At the 1321 mark you can hear brakes releasing AND doors closing simultaneously, while the train arriving on track 1 prior the doors opened immediately. I'd speculate on what I've seen here there is a proper conductor at the 3 x 3 position

It turns out that the two six car sets are linked. It's anyone's guess as to what will be done when one of them has to go out of service for maintenance as there are no other six car linked sets in existence since the R62A's on the 1 and 6 are all now five car sets. I suppose that they could take a five car link and couple one single car to it.

There is no c/r.

The door operating car is kept in the same place.

One t/o is only operating the train, And the other is operating both the Train and the doors.

That duty would be shared so each t/o job would alternate at various times of the day in doing both jobs and one job.

IRT 42nd Street Shuttle - R-62A (all times; train operator at each end)

Ridiculous semantics.

One operator for eastbound and a different operator for westbound. If everyone wants to call that OPTO, feel free.

But then what's your actual question? Are you asking if there will need to be a third crew member?

Thanks.

I'm sure there is a gap train or 2 in Livonia Yard to swap out on the midnight if necessary. I'm guessing a fleet of 24 cars assigned to the shuttle. 4 trains of 6 linked cars.

Yes, if 1 of the trains on the road goes bad during the day and can't be repaired w/o going to the yard, they have a problem. Especially 4 track.

Maybe there is a spare set that was made up for this. They've had 2 years to think this through. IINM, the Franklin Shuttle has 4 2-car sets. 2 are in operation, 1 is ready at Prospect Park and the 4th is at Coney Island. I'm sure there is a spare set at the ready somewhere. And if push came to shove, they could always just put a 5 car set on the line.

No. For the last 60+ years one side of all #7 trains is 6 cars long.

The c/r on a #7 train operates 6x5.

An OPTO t/o on the shuttle also has one 6 car zone.

And also, you can walk from the TSQ platform, along the former Track 3 corridor, and go downstairs to the IND platform level.

Then, you can go upstairs to the IND mezzanine but able to walk south to the exit, pass the fare control, at 40th Street on 6th Avenue, and a little further down to the 39th Street exit on the west side of the block.

Now imagine if that long closed corridor between 40th Street and 35th Street, with an exit at 38th Street was still in use (now the site of the 34th Street-6th Avenue master tower I believe). That's all in hindsight though.

Excellent video, thank you very much for posting!!

While the changes are very nice and very useful, I’m very sad at the antiseptic feel of the Times Square end. The old station was teeming with cues of the 1904 original station, from the ghostly Track 4 platform, to the ancient Knickerbocker door, to the sharp curve requiring gap fillers, to the open west end of the station that gave you a clear view of the original track configuration from nearly 120 years ago. Those are all gone now, replaced by acres of endless tiles. It’s very functional and very useful but also soulless and cold.

The original 28 IRT stations were designed to be works of art. Obviously nothing lasts forever but I would have liked to see some cues honoring the station’s storied past.

Especially given there now is actually an entrance to the GC portion of the Shuttle on 42nd west of Madison towards 5th Avenue, so it would not even be one avenue block.

Then you could transfer to all three 42nd Street stops on the (7) within fare control as well as any other subway line on 42nd and walk from 3rd Avenue and 42nd to 8th Avenue and 40th or 44th within fare control and continue through Port Authority to 9th Avenue and 40th.

They said the same thing when the main building on Ellis Island was renovated and made a museum. It was felt it had been, "sanitized."

I took a look today

I had to be on the UES today and decided to take a look on the way home. At 63rd/Lex I took the F to 42nd.

First off, the new passageway with the murals is really nice, with the video of the dancers that the murals replicate. I hadn't seen the video mentioned anywhere but there are 8 (I think) monitors all tied together.

The passageway itself isn't as long as I thought it would be. I commented above somewhere that I wouldn't want to go through there at night but it really wasn't so bad. It is squarely within the trackway with the original pillars.

Thirdly, I think this redesign is brilliant. Without having to build new tunnels or do any major construction they've managed to make this much easier to use at Times Square. And they kept as much of the original elements as they could. The old track 4 platform is still walled off but maybe they are keeping that as well for whatever. The original tunnel walls are tiled over in the old style tiles. Possibly the hardest construction is the stairway to the 6th Ave lines where they broke through.

As for the trains, track 4 was running a 6 car draw-bar coupled train with wide cabs at both ends. I didn't wait for track 1.

And then there was this, an official MTA Vignelli map!

If COVID didn't exist, I wonder if they would have used the low V's on reopening day?

There must have been a better way.

As I recall. thr original plans for eliminating one of the shuttle tks was to eliminate tk 4 entirely and used only tks 1 and 3. With the switch connecting tk 1 to 3, both shuttle trains would utilize tk 1 to get to the Lex Line and the connection to the Bway Line eliminated entirely. It was also intended to operate 5 car trains as the total number of cars in shuttle service would be the same as it was with 3 tks in service. The current setup is probably a better idea and with the reconfiguration of theT/Sq end, the movable bridge over tk 4 is no longer necessary simplifying the train swapping operation.

Before the implementation of the pseudo “OPTO” operation, it was 1 T/O and 1 C/R except in rush hours when a second T/O on each train was assigned.

That’s because despite the assignment of 2 T/Os to the shuttle, both must be OPTO qualified. It wouldn’t surprise me if all T/Os are nw being OPTO qualified in the event that those on the extra list and V/R are assigned there.
