I took a look today

I had to be on the UES today and decided to take a look on the way home. At 63rd/Lex I took the F to 42nd.

First off, the new passageway with the murals is really nice, with the video of the dancers that the murals replicate. I hadn't seen the video mentioned anywhere but there are 8 (I think) monitors all tied together.

The passageway itself isn't as long as I thought it would be. I commented above somewhere that I wouldn't want to go through there at night but it really wasn't so bad. It is squarely within the trackway with the original pillars.

Thirdly, I think this redesign is brilliant. Without having to build new tunnels or do any major construction they've managed to make this much easier to use at Times Square. And they kept as much of the original elements as they could. The old track 4 platform is still walled off but maybe they are keeping that as well for whatever. The original tunnel walls are tiled over in the old style tiles. Possibly the hardest construction is the stairway to the 6th Ave lines where they broke through.

As for the trains, track 4 was running a 6 car draw-bar coupled train with wide cabs at both ends. I didn't wait for track 1.

And then there was this, an official MTA Vignelli map!
