They still had those commemorative maps that fall! I acquired a couple of them from a station agent at 86th St.

Perhaps there should be an entry for January 1, 1966. A transit strike welcomed New York's newly elected mayor John Lindsay into office and lasted for thirteen days.

Thank you, as always!! Also for the SAS opening, they issued a current version of the Vignelli map- totally awesome!! It shows SIR as well!!!

Also, I think concurrent with the elimination of most bus/subway transfers, they raised the fare from $1.00 to $1.15...

Most free transfers between subway and buses are discontinued.

Besides the two you mention that were kept, what other free bus/subway transfers existed at that time and were discontinued? Culver shuttle? Myrtle?

GBS: The following subway to bus transfers were discontinued effective January 1, 1990.

Gun Hill Road-W.P.Rd. – Bx-55

161st Street-River Avenue – Bx-55

9th Avenue – West End Line – B-35

Church Av-McDonald Av – B-35

Marcy Av- Broadway – B-24

Myrtle Av-Broadway – B-54

Jay Street – B-54, B-67, B-75

High Street – B-57, B-62, B-69

The transfer situation at Jay Street and High Street is explained more fully in the following:

Tuscarora Dispatch No 15

Bus and Subway Transfers at Jay Street and High Street

The operation of BMT el trains across the Brooklyn Bridge came to an end on March 5, 1944 and the remaining el lines were cut back to a new terminal called Bridge-Jay Streets. Transfers were issued to and from the BMT trolley cars running across the bridge to Park Row.

Trolley cars ceased operating across the bridge on March 6, 1950. A transfer was established for surface lines at the Brooklyn end of the bridge to the IND High Street Station.

A transfer was also established between the BMT Bridge-Jay Streets Station and the IND Jay Street Station.

In both cases the transfers from surface lines and the el trains indicated that they were valid on the IND only as far as Broadway - Nassau Street.

Passengers going from Manhattan to Brooklyn would request transfer upon exiting from the railroad clerk at High Street for the surface lines or at Jay Street for the el lines.

Sometime in the middle 1950's the TA began to restrict this transfer privilege. Beginning on June 25, 1956 the transfers to the bus lines formerly issued at High Street would now be issued only at Broadway - Nassau Street to someone buying a token.

Three months later on September 15, 1956 the transfer to the el lines formerly issued at Jay Street would now be issued only at Broadway - Nassau Street to someone buying a token.

This privilege was further restricted on January 1, 1957 when transfer from the el to the subway would only be issued by railroad clerks at stations between Sumner Avenue and Navy Street to passengers buying a token and requesting one. At nights and all day Sunday there were no agents on duty at these stations and fares were collected on the train by the conductor. During these times the railroad clerk at Bridge-Jay Streets issued the transfer. Presumably at this time the transfers to the el trains issued at Broadway - Nassau Street began bearing the legend "valid only for a continuing ride for stations from Navy Street to Sumner Avenue."

The Myrtle Avenue El was discontinued south of Broadway (Brooklyn) on October 4, 1969 its replacement was the B-54 Myrtle Avenue bus. The transfer privilege to and from the IND at Jay Street was retained presumably with the same restrictions.

The bus transfer privileges established at High Street on March 6, 1950 were to five routes; B-57, B-62, B-67, B-69 and B-75. On February 7, 1988 the B-67 and B-75 were re-routed and the transfer point for these two routes was moved to Jay Street.

On January 1, 1990 the TA discontinued all but two subway to bus transfer points. The two exceptions were at Rockaway Parkway to the B-42 and at 3rd Avenue - 149th Street to the Bx-55.

I am indebted to Mr. Bernard Linder for an article titled "Rapid Transit Transfers" which appeared in the February, 1980 issue of The Bulletin and to a subsequent article which appeared in the February, 1990 issue of The Bulletin for this information.

I also referred to my collections of subway maps.

This should have been mentioned also, thus should be inserted in the journal...

Tuscarora Almanac – January 1, 1936 – The Book of First Runs

Manhattan, New York
New York City Board of Transportation
Independent Subway System

The IND opened its new Houston Street subway line in the borough of Manhattan on this date back, with new stations at Broadway-Lafayette Street, 2nd Avenue, Delancey Street and East Broadway.

Based upon service posters as originally posted, the new route was scheduled to open at 12:00 noon on that date.

"E" trains would operate into this new line, with the terminal points seen on the roll signs as being between "Queens-Roosevelt Av." and "East Broadway". They were able to run between the upper level at West 4th Street-Washington Square and the temporary terminal at East Broadway. The York Street station in Brooklyn, further down the line towards Jay Street-Borough Hall, would not open until April 9, 1936.

Two years ago in 2019, as part of its centennial in the tabloid business, the New York Daily News republished a pair of photos from their archives in one of their issues, with each showing from a different era the mayor riding the subway back then.

One of them had Mayor LaGuardia riding inside an IND R-1 or R-4 type car, along with other passengers. He was photographed near the large roll sign box, and it displayed the Roosevelt Avenue and East Broadway destination readings. The route portion was signed as an "E | 8th Ave.", with the "Express" blacked out with a blank space.

(By the way, the other photo the paper had in its print edition was Mayor Koch riding inside an IRT "SMEE" type car with the other passengers.)

According to the book "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of New York City Subways Rollsigns and Ancillary Items: Volume 1 - BMT and IND Lines - 1914 to 1970's", published in 2011, and on pages 113 to 118, the Board of Transportation issued on November 14, 1933 a roll sign listings and specifications guide for the R-1 and R-4 type rolling stock.

It covered both the front and side, route and terminal readings for each of the car model fleets, divided in these categories: as built, as changed, and recommendations for new curtains (i.e. roll sign readings).

The R-1's had listed route original readings for lines "A" through "DD", "E", "F", "GG" (as with "Crosstown Local" on side, "Crosstown" on front) and "HH" (as with "Fulton Local" on side, "Fulton" on front). In terms of the R-4's, they had only for "A", "AA", "C", "CC", "E" [with "Express" later blacked out as a blank on side), "GG" (as with "B'klyn-Queens", etc.) and "HH" (as with "Fulton St.", etc.)

The R-1's destination southbound side readings had included for "Chambers St.", "Jay St.-Boro Hall" [inserted there after delivery], "Culver-Church Ave.", "Culver-Kings Hwy", "Culver-Coney Isl.", "B'klyn-Church Ave." [inserted, etc.], "Fulton St.", "Sixth Av.", "Houston-Essex", "Houston St.", "B'klyn Crosstown" and "No Passengers".

The R-4's destination southbound side readings had included for "Chambers St.", "Gravesend-Church Ave.", "Gravesend-Kings Hwy", "Gravesend-Coney Isl.", "B'klyn-Church Ave." [inserted, etc.], "Fulton-Utica Av.", "Fulton-Rockaway Av.", "Jay St.-Boro Hall", "East Broadway", "Nassau Av.-B'klyn" and "No Passengers".

The R-1's destination northbound side readings had included for "Wash. Hts.-207th St.", "Wash. Hts.-168th St.", "Concourse-205th St.", "Concourse-Bedford Pk.", "Concourse-Fordham", "Queens-Forest H'ls", "Sixth Av.", "Court St.-Boro Hall" and "No Passengers".

The R-4's destination northbound side readings had included for "Wash. Hts-207th St.", "Wash. Hts-168th St.", "Concourse-205th St.", "Bedford Pk.-200th St.", "Queens Roosevelt Av.", "Queens-Forest Hills", "Jamaica-169th St.", "Smith-Bergen St.", "Court St.-Boro Hall" and "No Passengers".

The front route and destination readings on both the R-1's and R-4's were more or less in line with their side counterparts, and in the same format that subway riders and history fans would be familiar with upon looking at them in particular.

As for those recommendations suggested for new curtains for the R-1 and R-4 cars (back in 1933), to be more consistent in the same format from the latter contract of cars purchased, and with all the IND services being operated at the time and future expansion, they would now get "Queens Plaza" replacing "Concourse-Fordham", and "Jamaica-178th St." replacing "Jamaica-169th St."

Any destination and route readings in connection with "Sixth Av." (including for "B/BB" "D/DD" and "F"), "Kings Highway", and "Coney Island" (each those with the Culver and Gravesend prefixes) would be removed for that time being back in 1933, along with "Houston-Essex", "Houston St.", "Fulton St." and "B'klyn Crosstown" without replacement. The "E" would still have its "Express" reading blacked out on the side as a blank.

Of course, the Board of Transportation would soon have to have new additional destination terminal and route readings in the future, and that meant new roll signs to be made, even up to the R-9's. And so it goes...

One would have had to examine R-1 and R-4 destination sign rolls sometime before Chrystie changes to confirm destination and terminal station listings.

Weren't there destination sign lists, for all three divisions published in the Division Bulletins prior to Chrystie St.?

I doubt that there was any service operated between the upper level of W 4 St and anyplace on the Houston St Line since there are no switches on the upper level for turning trains in either direction nor are there any spaces in the station area where they could have existed at any time. Couple that with the track arrangement that only allows for the lcl tks at W 4 to access Houston St and the likelihood of such a service having operated is small to none.

I think this is a misunderstanding. If, as the signage in the picture showing LaGuardia is accurate it was an E coming in from Queens Blvd but switching to the 8th Ave local tracks after leaving 7th Ave SB. Thence via W4th upper lcl side of platform switching to Houston St...
Does this compute?

Exactly!

Looking at the 2015 book "Tracks of the Independent Subway 1937-1940" with all the track diagrams printed by the IND, "E" trains had be operated on the 8th Avenue local tracks between 42nd Street and West 4th Street (upper level), then would be able to switch downward into the Houston Street Line.

Although the West 4th Street lower level platforms and trackway were built (for the planned 6th Avenue subway route), they were not in service. Surprisingly, the interlocking tower on the lower level was listed as 'temporary tower".

Probably they could have been the case at the time, with what capital funding that the BOT had available in 1933. Construction on the 6th Avenue line did not start until March 1936 though.

I have a series of track maps of the IND from the 1930s that show the wash Hts and Concourse Lines from their north terminals to as far as at least Hudson Terminal and it shows the temporary tower at W 4 St as being on the upper level immediately south of the station in the space between the S/B lcl and exp tks.

Yes, after reviewing that book with those same IND trackage maps, and which you also have in your collection, the "temporary tower" was on the upper level south of the West 4th Street station. Thus I misread it before, so I now stand corrected.

As I wrote before, I have seen HOUSTON-ESSEX signs on old pre-Christie "F" trains, but never one that showed EAST BROADWAY.

Whenever I see “temporary” towers like that, I often wonder what ever became of the interlocking machines that were removed from them.

As based upon that BOT November 1933 listing specifications guide, the "East Broadway" designation was already placed on the R-4's first batch of new roll signs back then in 1932-1933. The "Houston-Essex" designation was only on the R-1's already. It was recommended that "East Broadway" were to be on both R-1 and R-4 boxes when they would be changed again.
