Re: ADDED ENTRY Re: Tuscarora Almanac for January 1

Two years ago in 2019, as part of its centennial in the tabloid business, the New York Daily News republished a pair of photos from their archives in one of their issues, with each showing from a different era the mayor riding the subway back then.

One of them had Mayor LaGuardia riding inside an IND R-1 or R-4 type car, along with other passengers. He was photographed near the large roll sign box, and it displayed the Roosevelt Avenue and East Broadway destination readings. The route portion was signed as an "E | 8th Ave.", with the "Express" blacked out with a blank space.

(By the way, the other photo the paper had in its print edition was Mayor Koch riding inside an IRT "SMEE" type car with the other passengers.)

According to the book "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of New York City Subways Rollsigns and Ancillary Items: Volume 1 - BMT and IND Lines - 1914 to 1970's", published in 2011, and on pages 113 to 118, the Board of Transportation issued on November 14, 1933 a roll sign listings and specifications guide for the R-1 and R-4 type rolling stock.

It covered both the front and side, route and terminal readings for each of the car model fleets, divided in these categories: as built, as changed, and recommendations for new curtains (i.e. roll sign readings).

The R-1's had listed route original readings for lines "A" through "DD", "E", "F", "GG" (as with "Crosstown Local" on side, "Crosstown" on front) and "HH" (as with "Fulton Local" on side, "Fulton" on front). In terms of the R-4's, they had only for "A", "AA", "C", "CC", "E" [with "Express" later blacked out as a blank on side), "GG" (as with "B'klyn-Queens", etc.) and "HH" (as with "Fulton St.", etc.)

The R-1's destination southbound side readings had included for "Chambers St.", "Jay St.-Boro Hall" [inserted there after delivery], "Culver-Church Ave.", "Culver-Kings Hwy", "Culver-Coney Isl.", "B'klyn-Church Ave." [inserted, etc.], "Fulton St.", "Sixth Av.", "Houston-Essex", "Houston St.", "B'klyn Crosstown" and "No Passengers".

The R-4's destination southbound side readings had included for "Chambers St.", "Gravesend-Church Ave.", "Gravesend-Kings Hwy", "Gravesend-Coney Isl.", "B'klyn-Church Ave." [inserted, etc.], "Fulton-Utica Av.", "Fulton-Rockaway Av.", "Jay St.-Boro Hall", "East Broadway", "Nassau Av.-B'klyn" and "No Passengers".

The R-1's destination northbound side readings had included for "Wash. Hts.-207th St.", "Wash. Hts.-168th St.", "Concourse-205th St.", "Concourse-Bedford Pk.", "Concourse-Fordham", "Queens-Forest H'ls", "Sixth Av.", "Court St.-Boro Hall" and "No Passengers".

The R-4's destination northbound side readings had included for "Wash. Hts-207th St.", "Wash. Hts-168th St.", "Concourse-205th St.", "Bedford Pk.-200th St.", "Queens Roosevelt Av.", "Queens-Forest Hills", "Jamaica-169th St.", "Smith-Bergen St.", "Court St.-Boro Hall" and "No Passengers".

The front route and destination readings on both the R-1's and R-4's were more or less in line with their side counterparts, and in the same format that subway riders and history fans would be familiar with upon looking at them in particular.

As for those recommendations suggested for new curtains for the R-1 and R-4 cars (back in 1933), to be more consistent in the same format from the latter contract of cars purchased, and with all the IND services being operated at the time and future expansion, they would now get "Queens Plaza" replacing "Concourse-Fordham", and "Jamaica-178th St." replacing "Jamaica-169th St."

Any destination and route readings in connection with "Sixth Av." (including for "B/BB" "D/DD" and "F"), "Kings Highway", and "Coney Island" (each those with the Culver and Gravesend prefixes) would be removed for that time being back in 1933, along with "Houston-Essex", "Houston St.", "Fulton St." and "B'klyn Crosstown" without replacement. The "E" would still have its "Express" reading blacked out on the side as a blank.

Of course, the Board of Transportation would soon have to have new additional destination terminal and route readings in the future, and that meant new roll signs to be made, even up to the R-9's. And so it goes...
