[PHOTOS] ***R-10's On The (F) 1980 *** |

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Mon Mar 12 19:18:58 2018 Over view at Stillwell Terminal, from left to right. R-42's on the (B), R-10's on the (F), also R-46's on the (F), R-27/30's on the (D) and R-32's on the (N). That gas tank is long gone. August 1980 The sublime and the ridiculous. That's sublime on the right, ridiculous on the left. The roadbed needed some foliage premeditation. (August 1980) Leaving Stillwell Terminal, R-10's are headed to Manhattan & Jamaica-179th St. I heard that the Queens Blvd. folks were howling that their cool, comfy and quiet R-46's were replaced by denizens from the 8th Ave. subway. Railfans didn't mind. (August 1980) Approaching the Van Sicklen (now Neptune Ave) station, R-10's are ready for the Culver treatment. In my opinion, riding the R-10's on the Culver "el" was a once in a lifetime experience. (November 1980) With apologies to Johnny Tillotson, this is poetry in motion. Or at least a limerick ! Approaching the West 8th St. station. (October 1980) #3226 & #3237 lead the way entering the lower level of West 8th St station. If you look closely, you'll see another train of R-10's leaving. (October 1980) R-10's are seen here at Smith-9th St with the Twin Towers part of the skyline. R-10's were assigned to the (GG), but as a full length (F) train, they were so sweet ! (September 1980) Coming soon.......R-10's on the (D) ! |

I was just in my teen years, but I remember that summer well. A lot changed seemingly overnight like R-10s to Jamaica yard, R-44 back on the D, R-46 on the CC (biggest shocker). I remember that morning I was at Tremont Ave heading to my summer job in midtown. I was a the south end or the S/B platform when a CC arrived. I knew something was strange in that train was a lot less noisy than the typical CC. I heard a partial release of the brakes as it slowed to a stop, and was thing it was a D train arriving on the local tracks. To my shock... it was a 6-car R-46 consist. For CC service they operated in A-B-A-B-B-A configuration. Then, a D train with R-44 consist arrived on the express train. This too was a suprise as the previous workday some R-46 cars were still on the D line. As I rode to midtown on the morning of shockers... While we were leaving the 7th Ave station, a packed s/b E train with R-10 cars came barreling into the station. The memories!!! |

That was during the time the R46's had the cracked trucks and transit aimed to restrict them to rush hours only. The fleet got trucks inspected Tuesday after the PM rush till Wednesdays AM rush. Those not inspected got inspected after the PM rush Wednesday till the AM rush Thursday. Whatever didn't get inspected were not allowed to go in service for the AM rush Thursday. Progress depended on the number of trucks found with cracks as those cars had to get "drilled" out of the train with another car substituted. The fleet also got trucks inspected Friday nights straight thru until completed. The trains one by one went into the barn with car inspectors inspecting the trucks with their lanterns. |

Yeah, I hadn't made the connection that day. I realized it soon afterward with the CC being rush hours only, and the remaining R-46 at Jamaica would come into service during rush hour. Thanks for the explanation. One thing that I rememebered was how quickly all of this started happening. |

Them and R40 Slants are my favorites I remember in the mid-70s having to go with my school on field trips to the Museum of Natural History and I would sneak away from the group and go downstairs and watch the R10s go flying by on the express tracks by the subway platform by the museum Subway entrance in the basement. You can hear them coming from fall off until that pitch gets higher and higher and higher and then they would come flying by which was probably about 50 miles an hour! And then after awhile I would go back to my classmates and no one was ever the wiser! |

The R40 slants were an awesome ride as well. These were my favorites, and I was thrilled when they came over to the A line from Jamaica. I remember that n/b express trains coming through that station were indeed at full speed. In fact.... they were usually blazing along even as they passed through 72nd Street station. We also went to the Museum of Natural History on a class trip. Then... we came back later in the school year to the Planetarium. |

Thank you for posting. Transit wise that was my favorite time period. Everything was everywhere.R10s on the A, CC, E, F, GG; R27/30s on the AA, B, D, J, LL, M, QB, RR, SS; R32s on the E, F, GG, N, QB, RR (during the last week of the R44/R46 swap, there was a crap load of R32s on the A); R44s on the E, F, (later placed back on the D); R46s on the A, CC, D, E, F. As far as the folks on Queens Blvd howling about the R10s, they raised so much hell that they called the media-and the media showed up at 179th St, interviewed disgruntled passengers about having to ride in those grunged up hot boxes, then aired it on Eyewitness News. I couldn't believe what I was watching. Well I am looking forward to your pictures of R10s on the D. |

Actually the CC was not a rush hour only line-just 97% was. The other 3% (Broad Channel-Rockaway Park) operated 19/7 a week. However, even on that portion of the route, it never operated the R46s other than during the rush hours only. |

Besides all the astonishing equipment assignments you mentioned on NYCT, what a high-school kid like me could see and do back then, was pretty amazing.Dutch doors on Conrail (now MNRR) trains going up the Hudson. K-cars on PATH. RDCs from Newark Penn to Philly. PCCs in TNJ colors on NCS. Oh, and the Nostalgia Specials were still runing! |

The R-10's were true survivors of all the neglect and abuse they took and kept on running. About 100 of them lasted until 1989! They were the last cars which used outside caps and triggers instead of push buttons inside a cab to open and close the doors. |

[/i]Totally did. I guess it was quite a production when they'd take the 4-car AA trains and create 8-car consists for rush hour B service, and reverse that operation after rush hour. |

I was just happy to be old enough to go out riding and exploring.Another one I enjoyed was the long-term project that would close down stations Lenox Ave during weekends and late nights. I used to love riding and watching the shuttle bus action. Then, Lexington Ave had plenty of off-hour express service since #2 trains had to use that line. |

Yeah, I'm not sure of it was louder being on one of those platforms or riding the train itself. Especially in warmer months when windows were open and storm doors open. |

In 1984-86 my job required me to work two days per week in our downtown office. In the PM I'd take the 'M' or 'R' at Broad Street to 9th Street for the 'F' train. The R27s on the Nassau 'R' were the absolute bottom of the barrel. Covered in and out with graffiti they lumbered along, slowly. One night an R27 pulled into 9th Street and died right there. Passengers were ordered off but the train couldn't move. IIRC by early 1987 the R27s were all retired. One of the worst pieces of passenger equipment that the TA ever ordered. |

The R44s and R46s were first assigned to the E and F for operational and political reasons. The E and F had the oldest R1-9 equipment into the early 1970s. The Coney Island and Jamaica yards were set up to maintain the R44/46 fleets. The neighborhoods served by the E and F were solid middle-class neighborhoods represented by some powerful Albany politicians like the late Stanley Steingut and filled with people who vote. |

That's if those little fans even worked. And the dark cars were a big problem on the R10's.Not so much for me because I met my wife to be on a dark R10 car on the GG. Still together. 35 years next month. |
