And 50 years ago today, I rode on an R-32 D train for the first time. We went Christmas shopping at Macy's, then headed for the 6th Ave. line when that train glided in on the uptown local track (D trains were still running local along 6th Ave. on weekends then). We took it to 59th St., at which point the conductor announced, "The next stop on this train will be 125th St." That was something new, I'm sure. Then it was back to 42nd St. and the PABT on a s/b Abbott.

I believe that train of early R-44s came complete with rugs, a first for the NYC subways!

The D train has always run express between 59th and 125th, beginning in 1940 when that route was first established. That pattern has nothing to do with the Chrystie Street service, which ushered in the R32 consists on the D.

The weekend service pattern in late 1967 until July 1968 was D and F running local between W4th and 47-50th, and B trains to/from Coney Island turning at West 4th St. middle tracks.

And before 1940, do I have this right for CPW. . .?

A and C express
AA local

I find it interesting that they seemed to reserve B and D for routes that weren't to run for 7 years, such that for that amount of time there existed A, C, and E but no B, D, if I have the history right.

After 1940, added to above, D was Concouse-6 Av Exp and CC was Concourse-8 Av Lcl

Yes. BB was started 12/16/1940, when the 6th Ave. IND opened. Rush hours only service, all local stops, between Bedford Park and 34th St. In Nov. 1967 the south portion was extended to Coney Island via the Manhattan Bridge and BMT West End line, and it was rechristened the B train.

You all have it wrong. Prior to 1940 the A and C (which was rush hours only)ran express in Manhattan only between 145 St and Chambers St. Local service on CPW was provided by the 24/7 CC. As late as the 1970s there were even signs on CPW stations advising passengers for Wash Hts to change at 125 St for A trains. Once the Concourse opened, the AA service ceased operation until 1940 when it resumed as a non rush hour only operation with the BB providing rush hour service between 168 St and 34/6. The CC then became a rush hour only service. Both the C and D continued to operate along the Concourse but the C remained a rush hour only service while the D now became the full time Concourse service operating as it does to this day express on the Concourse during rush hours and local on the Concourse at all other times.

Actually, the B from Coney Island to W 4th didn't run on Sundays. Up to and including 6/30/68, Sunday service on the West End line was provided by TT local/shuttle trains from Coney Island to 36th St. Brooklyn only. But the D ran local on 6th Ave. anyway, as it did all times except rush hours M-F.

10/24/1949

The C terminated at Hoyt-Schermerhorn. There was no Fulton express service.

After 10/24/1949 during rush hours, the A ran express from Hoyt-Schermerhorn to Bway-ENY and the E was re-routed from Bway-Lafayette to Bway-ENY as a local.

I know the D was an express up CPW. I found out firsthand on May 7, 1967. We were on the n/b platform at 81st St. when a rumble grew to a roar, then a prewar D ripped past on the express track, gears wailing away at F# above middle C. It wasn't long after that when a blur of teal and white thundered past. It was an R-10 Abbott, decked out in the racing stripe scheme.

The "something new" I was referring to was the announcements on a D train, NOT that it was now running express up CPW. My apologies for any confusion.

I really had a thing for the R44s when they first started running.
Loved the Darth Vader sound they gave off before they left the station.
Loved the way they looked.

They only ran in service on the 4 main IND routes back then, but you occasionally spotted one on the B GG even the EE once.

The A became the home of those cars for years

It's nice that they finally put the weekday-only B on the Brighton from 2004 on - it solved that whole question of what to do with the West End service in Manhattan during off hours.

The R44/46/68 family of 75 foot cars are my favorites. Mostly for the comfortable transverse seating and bright colorful interiors. During their last rehab the R44SI fleet had it's orange-red-yellow seats repainted a crummy blue-gray color. I understand why it was cheaper to repaint them like that but I miss the 'disco' colored seats.

The 63-car R44SI fleet is due to be replaced in 2020(?) with the 75-car R211S, the SI Railway version of the R211. AFAIK there is no firm info if the R211S will differ from the R211 in any substantial way. I'd love for the R211S to have transverse seating but it's unlikely.

That was only the rush hour E. The rest of the time the E continued to operate to Bway/Laf although I have heard that for a while, the Es did operate all the way to 2 Ave until construction started on the Chrystie connection. By the way, until 1954, the D ran to Hudson Terminal 24/7 and the F ran to Church Av.

I still remember seeing some R-1/9 side route signs set to D-6th Ave. Express and others set to D-6th Ave.-Houston Express in 1967. By then, of course, all 6th Ave. trains ran via Houston St.

The original D ran toHudson Terminal so it didn’t go anywhere near Houston St till after it got routed down the Culver Line. The F, on the other hand always ran via Houston St until at some point, I’m not sure when, late PM and weekend Fs terminated at 34/6. There was also a reading for 8th Ave/Houston since the first service that operated via Houston was the E prior to the opening of 6 Ave.

I think they looked great until they took the blue stripe away. From that point until maybe 10 years ago, they looked just plain. During their last 2 years, they really looked like crap. You could just see that they were shot/used up/dying. The ones surviving on Staten Island still look sort of OK- easier service, even if it's all outdoors, I guess has prolonged their lives.

Even the R46s are looking a bit tired, to me.

There was a different feel of the cars that one could tell, too.
To me, it had something to do with the floor.
The 46s felt more "solid"...if that's how you could describe it,compaired to the flooring of the 44s...like there was something missing that should be there.
The 46s even looked better structurally...neater lines... Better welds.

I guess since the 44s were the first of its type built by St Louis Car,they continued a method that worked for them, LAHT Steel frame with Stainless Steel shell...might have some thing to do with the issues developed further along.
Sad to see all mainline cars go, however.
Ain't nothing like a little elbow grease to keep something in good shape.
