You all have it wrong. Prior to 1940 the A and C (which was rush hours only)ran express in Manhattan only between 145 St and Chambers St. Local service on CPW was provided by the 24/7 CC. As late as the 1970s there were even signs on CPW stations advising passengers for Wash Hts to change at 125 St for A trains. Once the Concourse opened, the AA service ceased operation until 1940 when it resumed as a non rush hour only operation with the BB providing rush hour service between 168 St and 34/6. The CC then became a rush hour only service. Both the C and D continued to operate along the Concourse but the C remained a rush hour only service while the D now became the full time Concourse service operating as it does to this day express on the Concourse during rush hours and local on the Concourse at all other times.
