[PHOTOS] Fulton St. & Franklin Ave. 1980-81

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Tue Dec 12 16:45:39 2017

A brief study of the last remaining section of the Fulton St. el that stood until the line's reconstruction.
Franklin Ave, looking toward Fulton St. Any input about those closed stairways ? Sept. 1980

Looking at the el from the Franklin Shuttle platform area. Aug. 8,1981

Underneath old Fulton looking toward Broadway Jct. Oct. 17,1981

Same as above image although upstairs. Don't know about this closed off area.
Did it lead to a stairway that was removed years ago ? Oct. 17, 1981

image host
This building must be from the old Kings County RR days, but still survived after the rest of the el was demolished. Oct. 17, 1981
image host
Now it gets interesting. The thinner girders in the back are what's left of the Brighton-Franklin connection.
Edward Luciano's train traveled over those girders and the Malbone St. wreck became infamous. Oct. 17, 1981

Another view of that building atop remnant of the Fulton St el. Notice the detail in the woodwork.
This staircase was from the Fulton St. el and remained until the structure was razed.
I was told that the reason for not demolishing this structure was for passengers leaving
the Brighton-Franklin line could access the IND subway inbound station without crossing Fulton St. Oct. 17, 1981

I believe your 4th photo of that closed off platform was for the 1924 pedestrian overpass. It was built shortly after the track connection for Brighton trains was removed. The billboard faces east, so that would have been for people crossing over the tracks to go to/from the park Row bound el trains.

AWESOME! I've been looking for modern photos of the Fulton el remnants, since my pics (from my very first photo trip in the mid-'90s) were, um, lacking.

pic #1: from what I can tell, wasn't the stairway closest to you the one that was closed? I vaguely remember going up the next set of stairs to get to the shuttle platform. As a trivia note, on the landing for the latter set, there was an abandoned(?) underpass to the old downtown Brighton platform, and a corresponding closed-off stair entrance. Many old features were never removed until demolition!

pic #2,3: After (what seemed to me) a long period of not using the Franklin Ave shuttle until I was a high schooler ('78-'82), I remember that much of the Fulton remnant was still decked over with wood. When did they decide to cut back on the decking?

As a side note, when I went then the tower next to the shuttle still left their window(s) open. When I went back in the '90s, the window(s) had thick sheets of plastic over them, presumably to stop bullets. :-S

pic #4: by the mid-'90's, I'm not sure if the wooden planks were still there.

pic #5,7: the building was still there in the mid-'90s but it was a lot more dilapidated.

Thank you so much for posting these!

I made sure my walkman was hidden in my backpack. Only 2 lines scared the crap out of me in the 80's. One was the Franklin Ave shuttle. The other was the IRT on Livonia Ave. I rode that line once in 1987 and not again until a 2003 MOD fantrip.

It was still part of the active structure, so there may have been structural reasons, plus they still needed the space and stairs for people to get to the existing line. Lastly, they probably thought it was cheaper in the end to keep the remnant instead of demolishing it and building a new station.

I was told that the reason for not demolishing this structure was for passengers leaving the Brighton-Franklin line could access the IND subway inbound station without crossing Fulton St.

So basically this benefited crowds leaving a Brighton-Franklin train to use the structure to transfer to the Manhattan bound IND subway rather than cross Fulton St. on foot.

Other than that, there was no other reason for keeping the structure up. Just passenger safety.

Basically it was used as a passenger overpass. I guess it seemed cheaper to repurpose the existing structure than build a new bridge- as was eventually done in 1999.

Thanks for the pics!

I'm not 100% certain, but I think the roof over the staircase was removed by the '90s. At least, the top landing was no longer covered by the house's roof.

The tower is somewhere to the right in the second pic, if I remember correctly. It would be inside the curve where the Brighton turned away from the Fulton. What I'm not sure is if it's in the pic - the structure on the right looks too new.

I have seen pictures of R27/30s at that station in 1981, with weeds growing on the unused northbound (Sands St/Park Row, actually) trackway...so I know it was horrible. But this immediate area looks better than I'd have thought.

Your welcome, I don't recall the roof over the staircase being removed. In fact I believe that staircase was removed intact, not cut up and laying on the ground in a MOW yard by the Franklin Shuttle. IIRC, I have may seen it while riding by on the shuttle.

Damn these pictures brings back memories. I remember the first time I came here. 1982-was scared to death, Franklin & Fulton was a whole different ballgame back then. I had no clue this was waiting for me when came out of the Franklin Avenue station on the A.. When I climbed those raggedy steps to that wooden platform, that fear stayed downstairs and it was on LOL. I would ride that shuttle every chance I got.

It's a shame they had to tear it down. That was true transit history. Thanks for posting.

Oh man- I wish I'd have gone out there to see this!!!

Actually, I wish the Fulton El had been modernized, the Ashland Place connection built, and all of it still in operation. But that's fantasy. These remnants, however, existed until I was in my 20s. Had I known of them, I'd have gone out there. I may not have gotten out of my car- but I'd still have gone there.

On 7/3/89, I drove out looking to see if there were any remnants of the Lexington El. As we know, there are almost none, and certainly nothing that can be seen from a moving car. That day, I did get a good look at the Myrtle remnants (which I'd read about), and I discovered the remnants of the Broadway Ferry spur- of which I had not previously known.

You're welcome Far Rock.

Yes I had those same feelings too back in those days, growing a second pair of eyes in the back of my head !

The ERA had a "walking tour" of the Franklin Ave shuttle back then so with me and other railfans who attended, felt safety in numbers to get those shots at Franklin & Fulton. Otherwise, I wouldn't go there and whip out a camera by myself.

That area really changed.

You know you just answered my question to myself about those shots you took LOL. It took me years before I pulled anything out. Now everybody and their mother are taking pictures anywhere.

There was a Lex el girder left within a building until a few years ago. The building was demolished, the girder was scrapped.

There is still some irregularity in the girder pattern where the Lex el split off from the Bway el. The 3rd rail on all 3 tracks also break in them. I don't know if that is by Lex av or not.

The tickets are interesting. They really referred to the shuttle as the "Brighton Line" right up until the end?

Well, since the shuttle was at one time the Brighton-Franklin Line via Fulton St. the name just transcended over the years
and no one bothered to change it. On the Metrocard transfer, it clearly states, Franklin Ave shuttle

The building at the SE corner of 110th and Columbus Indigenous People's Avenue is set back on a curve, obviously because of the old 9th Avenue El. However, the storefronts extend to the corner, and were probably built around the el columns. I wonder if there isn't a similarly trapped el column in that building.

Hah... Never had that problem.
I went where ever I wanted to go.
Folks use to say the same thing about Bay Ridge back then...but I still went there.
The Only bad experience I ever had riding the rails was with a so called Police officer who was very sure I ran through the slam gate instead of paying the 60cents.

Even the booth clerk told him I paid, that it was someone else, yet this asshole just knew for sure that it was me... Cause he "saw me through the hole in the door".
Took the proper steps after he wasted time writing a ticket...got the clerk to back me up, even though the cop told him to stay out of it.
Clerk even showed up on the day I had to show up at court and vouched for me!
I didn't have to pay any fine.. And I filed a grievance suit... And was awarded.
