Why was did that remnant remain standing there so long? And what purpose did it serve?

I was told that the reason for not demolishing this structure was for passengers leaving the Brighton-Franklin line could access the IND subway inbound station without crossing Fulton St.

So basically this benefited crowds leaving a Brighton-Franklin train to use the structure to transfer to the Manhattan bound IND subway rather than cross Fulton St. on foot.

Other than that, there was no other reason for keeping the structure up. Just passenger safety.
