Tuscarora Almanac - October 3 - 4, 1969 - The Book of Last Runs

This is the last night of operation of BRT Q-Types wooden elevated cars. It was also the last night of operation for the Myrtle Avenue El south of Broadway.
The last train ran as an “MJ” Myrtle Avenue Local (BMT Rt. 11) and left Metropolitan Avenue at 11:38 PM, October 3. It left from Bridge-Jays Streets at 12:13 AM, October 4 and arrived back at Metropolitan Avenue at 12:43 AM. The consist was (S) 1619ABC, 1616 CBA. It was followed by an empty backup train with cars (S) 1613CBA, 1610 CBA. During the last rush hour these trains and two others were in operation. The consists of the other two trains was 1602CBA, 1611 CBA and 1620CBA,1629ABC. There were two post abandonment fan-trips, one on October 4 for the Electric Railroaders Association and another on October 5 for the Trolley Museum of New York. The consist on both trips was 1629ABC, 1616 CBA.

Our own Big Ed was the lucky motorman on the farewell run.

And on that same date, the Mets were playing the Braves in the very first NLCS game.

That is correct. 1969 was the first year for divisional play in MLB. Of course everyone who was around then knows that the Mets won the World Series that year the last game being won at Shea on 10/16/69 which was a Thursday. I rode a 7 local train past the stadium long after the game ended and the conductor got a big cheer from everyone on the train for announcing Willets Point - Shea Stadium as the home of the world champion Mets.

South of Broadway no. I did hear that post abandonment a work train with a Lo-V rider car did make a trip down the line to pick up signal apparatus. This was many years ago and I cannot verify it.

The O scale 1616ABC is in my workshop right now getting scale power trucks under the A and C units, the B already has the Peckham trailers. Trying not to rush it too much for the Rutgers meet on Hallowe'en. If I am lucy with time, it will have proper sound installed too.

These are MTH Q's modified with the lowered roof, additional details and road filth. I made a brass master of the IRT Composite sideframes these cars were outfitted with, and got them cast with Q-Car. Power by Q-car, as are the Peckhams and underbody parts.

This set will be joined by 1629ABC shortly.

There was talk of transferring some Lo-Vs to Myrtle circa 1960, but nothing ever came of it.As I have mentioned in several posts on the el, I was once told by a professional engineer that Myrtle Between Bway and Bridge Sts (railroad NORTH as I have also noted in many posts) could hold anything the NYCTS had including D types. The problem was the unique girder construction at the station entrances which would have required prohibitively expensive reconstruction to allow 10 ft wide cars on that portion of the structure.

Cleon Jones supposedly said, "Come on down, baby, come on down," as he waited for Davey Johnson's game-ending fly ball to wind up in his glove. I still remember Curt Gowdy proclaiming, "The Mets are the world champions!" Then they cut to Gil Hodges in the dugout instead of the players rushing out to greet Jerry Koosman.

In those days we didn't have spoiled players and greedy agents who complain about teams which expect their pitchers to give their team a chance to win the game. The Arnines still ruled the IND for the most part although the Standards and Q cars and the Steinway Lo-V cars didn't finish out the year.

It's obvious had the line continued it would have had to undergo an extensive rebuild to accommodate the heavier (and wider) BMT cars, possibly being rebuilt to a double-decked line with single tracks on each level (though with a few places where the tracks would be side-by-side so trains could cross over if necessary).

At some point, the line likely would have been taken underground, either after Bridge-Jay or as I would do in a rebuild now after Navy Street with the intention of such joining the Montague line at Jay Street-Metrotech (formerly Lawrence Street), possibly as a revived (W) to Astoria on weekdays and to Whitehall Street on weekends and late nights. With such a re-done line, you could even do a rush-hour loop line in both directions via the Myrtle El, Montauge, Nassau Line, Willy B and Broadway-Brooklyn line where Myrtle Avenue is the sole terminal (which in this case could be a "Brown (W)").

BMRR: When the Q's made their last runs I was in South Dakota helping Uncle Sam defend the US from an attack by those dastardly Canadians.

I did make in back to New York a few week later and was visiting my old job when word came through that the Mets had won the World Series. I walked outside and there was an impromptu block party going on all over midtown. Ticker tape was streaming from the windows and total strangers were patting each other on the back. It was a great day to be in the city.

That is true. Once the R-40s and R-42s arrived most of the newer Arnines were transferred to the BMT Eastern Division where they replaced all the remaining Standards, where they served until 3/31/77. Once the R-44s arrived all of the older Arnines started getting scrapped and the R-46s pushed the remaining ones onto the scrap lines as well. Of course the initial problems with the R-46 have been thoroughly discussed here but once through GOH they have been good riding reliable cars. Does anyone know what happened to the train that derailed (due to a broken rail) on the F in Queens? Did the cars get fixed or did they get scrapped?

I worked for Western Union for a short while on Hudson Street downtown where the big in and out stuff happened. Huge bins of tape that came out, and even bigger bins of tape full of what came in waiting to be latched down to a transmitter outbound. That paper tape was coated with oil, good thing we didn't smoke. :)

I’ve seen that set of drawings before, and I have wondered why the specs called for individual side windows instead of the R-36 style picture windows since by that time the picture window design was the standard for all future NYCTA equipment.

That was Budd's submission, and given that air conditioning was on the way, I'm actually a bit surprised that a 39 order would still be using axiflows instead of following on the 38 order which had a few air conditioned units in the group.

But then again, that's a patent drawing for the ventilation, had the final order been placed, they might have gone with the picture windows after all.

I remember the first time I saw a Q car.I rode my Schwinn 26" wheel with the spring shock absorbers down 69st from Woodside to Metropolitan Ave. made the right to the Station & saw two sets of Q's from the street, on each side of the wooden platform. I says to myself what the heck are those things with the ugly roofs, door extention slats & filthy windows. Found out much later why the cars looked that way & what a simple & durable car that was.
They were long gone from the Flushing line before I arrived.

I got the feeling they didn't want the extra weight. That's assuming that weight was the problem with the structure - otherwise, why, not just order some extra R-36s?

Perhaps ... it also seems as though the design there was aluminum instead of stainless, but I'm merely guessing here.

Very same one - 3rd floor, overnights doing all the stock transfers and international relay. Plus NYK relay since we were the hub for the east coast.

Weight probably was an issue. They probably would have needed to make these as light as possible for the line.

These might also have been the cars used on the 3rd Avenue El had it remained into the 1960s while the line would have otherwise been undergoing a total rebuild (and by now the first of two as I suspect there would have been another rebuild after 9/11) in order to handle more heavier IRT cars.

Thank you for this tidbit.. I know that work trains ran on the (Bronx) 3rd Ave El post-abandonment. I've wondered the same thing about the Myrtle and the Jamaica (past 121 and past Queens Boulevard)
