I can't imagine they would've been able to snake a freight line down 684 with the terrain being what it is

My solution with the (L) has been to extend it north as a 10th/Amsterdam avenue line, built as three tracks if possible with a short-turn terminal at 23rd/10th and a more standard terminal at 72nd/Broadway under the existing 1/2/3 station (and exits at 74th and 75th on Amsterdam with a transfer to the 1/2/3 as well) with provisions for an extension further up Amsterdam to Columbia University and points north. There would be an express stop at 41st/10th in this as well, built with provisions for a transfer to the (7) if such a stop is built for that line later.

Isn't that what Terex(sp?) and Caterpillar equipment are for? Seriously, Retaining the inability to move railcars across the Hudson between SI and Albany still seems dumb.

"We lost the Poughkeepsie Bridge during a period of massive RR route shrinkage."

Massive route shrinkage & the loss of the bridge are two different issues. When the bridge fire took it out of service, there was still many carloads of freight that had to get to/from New England. Conrail rebuilt the Beacon Line, put in welded rail from CP-58 off the Hudson Line to Rt 9, & rebuilt the grade crossing at Rt-9 which is 6 lanes where the rail crosses.

There were between 3 & 6 trains a day that traveled on that line in the mid 80s when I moved into the area.

When Conrail decided to re-route its NE freights thru Massachusets, it made the Beacon line expendible. This thoroughly pissed off NYS DOT since it paid for the grade crossing improvements along the line. Still don't know if or how that court fight was resolved.

So for freight to either NYC or all of New England,.

That's cute. You think Metro North and Amtrak want more freight on their lines?

Bicycling offers a partial solution to the urban mobility problem. It does not include massive capital outlays to implement and sustain.

It's seen as a financial threat to the status quo which require these massive outlays to sustain themselves. Anti-bicycling sentiment peaks when those who profit from the status quo perceive danger from bicycles reducing their livelihood.

Not you, but there are plenty who do. For the minimal cost and space it requires, it's worth the investment
