There's a fifth, center train between the two express tracks just south of 42 that runs down to 34. Its purpose was to allow Brooklyn trains to run up to 34 and then relay north of there, and Bronx trains to run down to 42 and relay south of there.

It would have been great if, on the 100th anniversary, instead of laying up north of Grand Central, then going south of GC then switching to the S.bound exp. track, (I think they did that didn't they?) so the train could switch to the former S.Bound local track, the lone Lex connection to the shuttle station (orig. GC) they just wrong railed it from City Hall sta. north on the southbound track directly into GC.
Of course that would have meant barring all Lex southbound locals from GC north for what? half an hour or so?

And heck, this was ten years ago anyway....

As Kevin said, the Spur is a turnback track, which in this case is used for the overnight #3 service. It can be used as needed to turn #1's #2's and #3 in the event of an unforeseen service disruption or some other Planned General Order.

The last FasTrack project at the end of the year will have #1 and #2 service end their runs at 34th St Penn Station on the express tracks. In order to accomplish this, the Spur will have to be utilized, that is, it will be possible to ride this section of track.

Now I wonder if the 2's will be running to Dyre again....

As for the operation of the Lo-V's on the shuttle, a test was done some years ago with the set on Track 4.

You probably know that behind the curving wall, at the south end of the GC subway mezzanine, and just down from the shuttle's passageway that there are portions of the original 1904 curving tunnel from Park ave. into GC, complete with trackless roadbeds, tunnel style pillars - the works.

You walk through this remaining structure (well lit) to get to the tower, through a door in the Concourse. I ran into a TA employee in GC around 1992 or so, who was nice enough to take me behind the door and show me what was there. We walked down to the tower and back.

The entire or part of, the actual ramp down from these portions to the 4th ave. tunnel, was destroyed when the large tower was built there (dont' know whether this was done during the '50s or 60s).
From the front window of a NB express, it looked like partt or all of the abandoned S. bound ramp curving down from GC is still there.

David Rogoff told me at a NY Div. meeting during the 60's, that the entire curving tunnel structure (roadbeds etc.) remained from 1918, when the H system was put in service, until 1929, when the original shuttle passage was built.

I wasn't sure I understood him correctly, but I thought he also said, there was some kind of wooden bridge built, over this remaining curving right of way that still existed east of the original GC / shuttle platform, for passengers to walk from the shuttle to the Lex. T also thought he said there were a couple of steps up on one or both sides of this bridge.

I could have misunderstood him and he just meant that the remaining 3 tracks were boarded over, and passengers just walked on them to get to the Lex.

I was told that info. on this existed in the Sprague Library, which has unfortunately, has been put into storage up at Branford.

LarryRedbird or Randy O. have either of you heard anything about the arrangements of temporary wooden structures like this existing back then?

Express Rider: You must have been going to the ERA meetings the same time that I was. Cap Field was the chairman at the time and Gerry Landau was the treasurer.

I know what Dave Rogoff was referring to. Through service on the Lexington Avenue Line began running on August 1, 1918. (That is through service between GCT and 33rd Street.) The shuttle operation was begun on that date between GCT and TS. Passengers were confused by the new arrangement and the shuttle was closed on August 4, 1918 due to overcrowding. The shuttle resumed operation on September 28, 1918. There were two passageways in use at the time both of which were inside the fare control zone. These were made one way in the rush hour and identified by red and green lights in the ceilings. I recall that those lights were still there in the early 60's.

The Contract III construction plan called for the creation of a two track shuttle platform at GCT east of the current platforms.. This platform would have connected to the two north tracks of today's shuttle (3&4). The two south tracks of today's shuttle (1&2) would have have connected to the Queensboro Line which of course never happened. The new platform for the shuttle was built but was never used . The track pits were boarded over and passengers still had to use the upper level passageway. The tracks pits were eventually filled in with concrete and the new passageway was placed in service on March 18, 1946. This is the passageway that we use today.

BTW Dave Rogoff references two passageways in use in 1918. The northernmost of these is still in use but outside the fare control zones. Does anyone know where the other one was?

Some of the best places to catch the Lo-Vs above ground:

Jackson Avenue

Simpson Street

West Farms Square (south end of northbound platform)

West Farms Square (north end of southbound platform)

The nice thing about Simpson Street is that if you have a powerful enough optical zoom, you can also catch shots of 6 trains on the curve north of the Whitlock Avenue station.

Though the only (minor) drawback to these stations is that few of them have a place to cross to the other side once the train passes. One would have to take the following train to Intervale Avenue or West Farms Square, then take a Manhattan-bound train from there.

That may not necessarily be the case although it probably is since certain branch lines opened before the H pattern was completed. The Jerome Line opened between 149 St and Woodlawn before the rest of the Lex Line did and that was equipped with brand new Lo-Vs from the beginning.

Would it be correct to assume that the initial Lo-V's must have been transferred to the Jerome, by running them from 148th shops south, to a point on the Lenox Ave. section, then reversing operating northbound to the Bronx; at 149th St. station, reversing again to wrong rail south on the connecting track from 7th Ave. route to completed East Side tracks (north of 135th St.); then north on the East Side track into 149th St. continuing north onto the Jerome Line.

When I first thought about the Lo-V transfer, I wondered if a provision for the East Side 149th Station, had originally been built as a shell or just an open space below the West Side 149th St. station when it was being built prior to the 1905 opening.

Looking at the Jerome Woodlawn page in nycsubway.org I read the following:

"The contract for the subway portion from 135th to 157th Streets was executed on November 17, 1911..."

Reading the quote from the Woodlawn page, which cites the Nov. 1911 date for the contract, it looks as though the Woodlawn line, including the East side 149th st. station was new construction between 1911-1917. That would have meant the original 149th St. Grand Concourse station, would have had to have been underpinned at some point, when the East side 149th st. station was being constructed

Ah ... so you think they actually used hold bulbs? Come to think of it, you're probably right. The LoV's were an odd-sized bulb compared to the arnines.

Since the west side 149/Mott platform is coming out of the Harlem R tube, that places it UNDER the east side platform, so no underpinning would have been necessary. At the time the original 149/Mott station was built, there was not even a thought of another subway in that area as yet. As for the Lo-V transfers, the assembled cars would likely have been transferred as you describe, 148 Yd to 135/Lenox, change ends to either just N/O 149/Mott or Jackson Av middle, change ends again back through 1A loop S/O 149/Mott lower to 138/Mott middle and back north to 149 upper or even all the way to Mosholu Yd for storage.

Other than "because he can," I can't think of any.

"that places it UNDER the east side platform"

I went back and looked at Dougherty's track map - indeed it is. I even overlooked that when referring to it while writing the post.

What a mistake!!!!!!!!!! How embarrassing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The few times I took the #5 from 149th St./Mott, onto the Lex tracks*, I could have sworn the train descended on that curve to get to the East side tracks. Guess I assumed that he east side station was underneath 149th St./Mott because it was built later.
How wrong I was.

*have not ridden up there in years.

"..,original 149/Mott station was built, ... not even a thought of another subway in that area yet."

the thought about including a provision for another station popped into my head while reading your previous post about the Woodlawn line's original opening. Got me wondering, what if? But I pretty much came to the same conclusion after reading the info. about contract date being Nov. 1911.
Thanks.

The Lo-Vs and non GOH BMT steels had 6 groups of 5 120V bulbs in series so that each bulb was 120V the same as household current. The R-1/9s and GOHed BMT steels had all the bulbs in the car in series and since there were 20 bulbs per car that meant that those bulbs were 30V instead of 120.

Another bit of info. The original 149/Mott lower platform was a bit farther south than it is now. The present south end of the platform was originally the north end. When the bellmouths were cut for the connection to Lex, the platforms were extended north and the south ends of both platforms removed to make room for the new tracks.
