So then just let ISIS board some trains, blow them up and taa-daa. After all, they would only be blowing up NEC trains to DC, not any trains that run through the heartland to prove "we can get you infidels anywhere we please" ... right? There's reasons for those procedures. OR would you prefer TSA to give you a free feel on the line outside the platform instead? What Amtrak is doing WORKS. |

Even the stupid TSA would be laughing their heads off at what Amtrak is doing. This is not what is keeping them away.A gate usher is not a sniffer dog, nor does glancing at an e-ticket for 2 seconds reveal a forgery. You think ISIS can't photoshop an e-ticket and can't talk in a North American accent ? The be-header certainly does. Don't fall for Amtrak's 9/11 Security Theatre. |

If Amtrak riders would simply boycott Penn Station New York, this would stop on its own without additional regulation. Yes, it is inconvenient, but it is possible and would get the message across. The reason travellers are treated worse than cattle is that they put up with it. It applies to air travel too. |

LION can see it in Chicago (although him likes it not at all) where there are low level platforms and silly gooses could block the tracks, But at NYP with its high level platforms and its ultra high volume, this is not necessary. Better to use as many stairways as possible.Move AMTK waiting across to the old post office and let them wait there, and let commuters use all of the gates in the present terminal. ROAR |

If Amtrak riders would simply boycott Penn Station New York, this would stop on its own without additional regulation.??? If I want to go from downtown NYC to another downtown in the NE Corridor, using NYP takes the least amount of time, even with the ridiculous boarding procedures. Why would I boycott NYP, possibly for years? Would you also recommend that NYC air passengers boycott JFK, LGA, and EWR, and instead use an outlying airport (like Islip, White Plains, or Stewart) that requires a long trip and change of planes just to protest TSA indignities at those airports? |

It actually is simple, though perhaps not inexpensive. Board an NJ Transit or Metro North train at Penn Station New York and take it to a station Amtrak serves. As long as it isn't rush hour, it should be doable. People drag all manner of luggage on LIRR trains to and from Jamaica. If one isn't willing to be inconvenienced even temporarily, the nonsense will continue. Voting with one's feet is effective. |

That will just never happen. Amtrak & the rest of the world knows in a post 9-11 world that we have to live in, they'll put up with the cattle drive situation if it gives the traveler a minimal sense of security. People will always want trains because they don't want to drive, they don't want to take the Hound & they don't want to fly. Penn Station will always be crowded.Lets keep it real here. If a few knuckleheads can get to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge & swap flags without being spotted & another troubled citizen can vault a fence outside the White house & make it all the way to the lobby before being stopped, Amtrak security would not be able to stop an individual determined on destruction, no matter how long the "cattle drive" lines are. In all seriousness though, trains have been a target for ne'er-do-wells across the planet. Just because there isn't a shoe basket or a free government grope doesn't mean that the trains aren't being watched and sniffed for potential ne'er-do-wells here. Plenty of feds riding the trains and watching, just doing it on the down low.All I can point out is that a few potential terrorist incidents were already thwarted, and done so quite quietly. Anyone who's ever ridden Amtrak across a border can tell you how stealthy they can be. :) But yeah, let's do the government grope thing instead. When you get older, it can be fun. :) |

IMO the more important element of the bill is the attempt to separate the NEC's finances fom the rest of the system. It allows anti rail right wingers to slash capital improvement funding from the NEC while simultaneously cutting funds to the long distance trains. |

About 1 month ago I was coming home to NYC after a stay in Virginia. VRE from Manassas was stuck behind a stalled freight and although I had left plenty of time to catch Amtrak 176, I made it to WAS with about 10 minutes to spare. I did not go upstairs and join the long line, I just walked over to 176 told the conductor I was stuck on VRE behind the stalled freight. He just waved me onboard even before the priority ticket holders. BTW the conductor on VRE gave me a free ticket to use on a future trip - a pleasant surprise! |

No isn't. It's YOUR responsibility and problem. You get off at the next stop and head back.Whose problem is it when a New Brunswick train is on Track 14 and a LIRR train is on Track 13 and a Metuchen passenger is headed to Hicksville ? Nobody at LIRR or NJT HQ is the least bit interested. |
