The 40 additional cars would have been a foolish expenditure. It is a shame that Amtrak's mgmt is so incompetent that it took their I.G. to whack them over the head for them to get it.Simply put, Acela is at half life. Bombardier would have taken them to the cleaners for these cars, and they all will be scrapped in 15 years since the 40 cars would have been orphaned and totally incompatible with a Tier III/Acela II. Better investment would have been to invest in 40 Next-Gen Amfleet replacement prototypes, or even Viewliner coaches, to NEC Business Class, and release 40 Business Class Amfleet-1 cars to add capacity to long distance trains to improve their farebox recovery and/or Chicago corridors to put the Horizon cars out of their misery sooner. |

And the idea that hating a fixed group defined by birth (race, national origin, etc) is somehow comparable to hating a fluid group defined by ideology and advocacy, whose membership is strictly voluntary on that basis, is simply ridiculous. |

In 1960, there was an active "Democrats for Nixon" operation in Virginia because JFK was unacceptable to them. At the same time the single VA Republican Congressman was from the suburbs of DC running to the left of the Byrd machine.. Nixon understood the swing of history and devised/exploited a "southern strategy" which ironicly brought us, Amtrak, EPA, Clean Water Act, ConRail, and getting DOD vendors interested in mass transit as another way of looting the Federal Treasury with overpriced junk. Both the Amtrak and Conrail enabling legislation came from outside RR lawyers as packages which were then shopped to find Congressional sponsors. PS, I voted for Lindsay in 69, but I can't imagine him belonging to the GOP today. |
