MTA workers' union: We want more money

If the MTA has a spare $30 million to add and restore service on buses and commuter rails, it also has money to pay workers more, the head of its largest workers’ union said today.

”They have enough for raises,” John Samuelsen, president of the Transport Workers Union said today.

”Its time for the MTA to stop screwing its workers. The MTA can pay.”

The TWU - which reps over 34,000 transit workers - is locked in bitter negotiations with the agency over demands for cost of living raises.

Its workers - who famously went on an illegal strike in 2005 - have gone seven months without a contract.

Speaking at a workers’ rally in Lower Manhattan, Samuelsen said he won’t accept a contract of three years with zero wage increases, as other state workers have.

The MTA - which recently increased service on dozens of buses, the Long Island Rail Road and MetroNorth - said its finances have improved because of cost-cutting.

But not enough to dole out raises.

”Our resources are limited and our budget is fragile, but we believe this extra funding is sustainable, and we are investing all of it in service,” said Adam Lisberg, MTA spokesman.

The MTA does not exist to provide perks for it's employees. It exists to provide transit to the taxpayer.

the unions, as entities, are the ones in the way, not him, not the gipper, not me, not the MTA, not the so called 1% (which, news flash, doesn't exist like you think it does).

it's all "Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie" with them. they're the greedy ones. they're the nazis. they're the ones feeding off the working class, and engrain into the workers not to question them.

questions like "why are we giving our dues to a candidate we didn't have a say in picking?" Or "why does the head of the union get a six figure salary, while we get nothing?"

they don't care about the workers, they never have, they only care about themselves. I will bet you anything that Mr. Samulson's car is not something anyone else on his track gang would be afford.

TWU members do dangerous jobs for little pay and are constantly getting vilified by newspapers (that bash all city employees, by the way). A cost of living increase is not unreasonable.

they're the ones feeding off the working class

Unions CREATED the working class and union members ARE working class. We are talking about skilled laborers (people who have gone through months or more of training) who make far less than what the average NYer makes in private industry.

This morning the MTA official presenting the budget stressed that the MTA was willing to give wage increases so long as they're paid for by work rules or other labor givebacks. I think the media is misinterpreting that as no raises.

In exchange for that lower salary is a guaranteed (essentially) pension and protection against loss of work due to downsizing. Private industry doesn't hold a candle to that; I can't name any company I would trust my future in over the long haul. Pensions are fast becoming a thing of the past, and 401Ks are at the will of the economy. Remember it's not their financial standing now, its what it will be 30 years from now. Apple and Google look good now but technology changes at a far faster rate, they can easily find themselves in the dust.

Those higher private industry salaries are necessary since the difference has to go into funding your own retirement... or *should*, people are really stupid with money now and I bet a lot of these six figure 20somethings will be begging for government aid in 10 years, but I digress...

Exactly... it is a tradeoff. Private industry offers substantially higher salaries, substantially better working conditions, and substantially higher risk than public service.

My point is that we're being very selective when we look at the nice parts of union jobs and cry about how anyone who contributes to a pension plan is a freeloader because their benefits are guaranteed (while forgetting that for the 30+ years they work in that field that person earns a salary that makes it difficult to raise a family on and puts up with a working environment those in private industry can't even imagine) or that person is greedy when the union asks for a raise (when we would never say that about a private employee who asks his/her boss for more money).

The issue is *all* employees get that raise. If it were based entirely on merit I think far fewer people would have an issue...

substantially better working conditions
Private industry had me standing on a roof pulling 40lb cinderblocks up 5 flights with nothing but a bucket and rope in the freezing rain. And working 16 hr days for 12 straight days with exactly $0 in overtime, since the tech industry is overtime exempt. This same private industry that fired a manager who had the gall to offer 2 hours comp time for every 4 hours unpaid overtime worked.

The issue is *all* employees get that raise. If it were based entirely on merit I think far fewer people would have an issue...

But in public service, raises for merit simply wouldn't be given. The city would put pressure on the agency to overlook merit in the interest of saving money. In addition, a uniform salary schedule is necessary to ensure that those who speak up about safety issues or contract violations aren't retaliated against (as a teacher, I can't tell you how many times I have seen a principal suddenly start giving teachers unsatisfactory ratings when they speak up or get involved with the union).

Private industry had me standing on a roof pulling 40lb cinderblocks up 5 flights with nothing but a bucket and rope in the freezing rain. And working 16 hr days for 12 straight days with exactly $0 in overtime, since the tech industry is overtime exempt.

That is not the norm in private industry. And if a private employee gets stuck in a situation like that, he or she can look for other employers who offer the same job. A public servant does not have that option.

This same private industry that fired a manager who had the gall to offer 2 hours comp time for every 4 hours unpaid overtime worked.

You are right -- that is a bad situation. And that is exactly why unions are needed...to prevent this kind of exploitation of the workforce.

We as members of the working class should be celebrating when workers are protected from being exploited -- not saying "if some of us can be exploited then we should all be able to be exploited".

Well, no kidding. How is this a surprise!

1) Eliminate Health Care and Retirement

2) Pay the workers enough money so that they can buy their own health care and retirement policies/investments. It is about time that the workers got out from under the thumb of the city/state and their sloppy bookkeeping and lawmaking that steals the funds that workers are entitled to but will likely never get.

But in public service, raises for merit simply wouldn't be given.

Tell that to United University Professionals (UUP). It works nicely because dead weight gets only the COL raises, while those who actually get work done get the merit raises. The end result is someone who's there for 3 years can find themselves making more than someone doing the same job (poorly) for 5 years. Which is how it should be.

And if a private employee gets stuck in a situation like that, he or she can look for other employers who offer the same job. A public servant does not have that option.

A public servant has equal opportunity in working in private industry as another person from private industry; a resume is a resume. The reverse, however, is not possible, since in most cases only entry level positions are available for civil service.

And that is exactly why unions are needed...to prevent this kind of exploitation of the workforce.
I agree. That manager was fired because the highest level wanted 0 hours of comp time for 4 hours unpaid OT. The staff obviously wanted 1:1. He figured 1:2 would be a good compromise, but then the guys regularly pulling 60 hr/wks on their 40 hr/wk paycheck started taking their comp time, and since they're understaffed, no one was around to pick up the slack. The solution wasn't to hire more staff, just get rid of the comp time and those who enabled it.

Not quite true with civil service ... there's plenty of "management confidential" positions available for highly skilled jobs ... only problem there is that there's no civil service protection and they pay maybe $10k a year more than they pay the grunts ... needless to say, they keep getting re-advertised. :)

I am unfamiliar with UUP, but can tell you from experience that I have seen many supervisors who consider "dead weight" to be whomever speaks up when the contract is violated or open questions the supervisor's directives and "good" employees to be those who kiss up.

I have seen many supervisors who consider "dead weight" to be whomever speaks up when the contract is violated or open questions the supervisor's directives and "good" employees to be those who kiss up.

In UUP that is an abuse that can be brought to the union office, and the slighted worker would likely get the raise with retroactive pay. Proving this type of abuse is rather easy in an office environment (documented progress reports, co-workers and student staff as witnesses) so no one dares try that crap.

Conversely, I have seen CSEA (which follows strict "everyone gets equal pay raises" rules) actually screw someone over who deserved a raise. A newly promoted person realized that her job position should have been set at a higher pay grade. If she was UUP, they would have easily been able to bump her salary accordingly, but with CSEA they would have to reclassify the title. She fought and successfully got the position reclassified... except she did not meet the experience requirement for the new title. So in trying to get a raise she managed to reclassify herself out of a job (I think she still had the option to go back to her pre-promotion position... either way it was messed up, she quit in frustration).

Actually not really...
Compare the MC Salary grades to the unionized equivalent... It's across the board 7% lower for the same grade. This is precisely due to lack of union protection, raises have been "administratively witheld" since 2008.

We pay our fair share of taxes, so would should get our fair share to earn a good Pay Check. If you have not notice that every thing is going up and my pay has stayed the same. $3.50 a galleon of gas X21 is a lot of money.

Oh I forgot dose daddy help you out.

The MTA like to negotiate in the media, so this way it look like the union is the bad guys.

This morning the MTA official presenting the budget stressed that the MTA was willing to give wage increases so long as they're paid for by work rules or other labor givebacks. I think the media is misinterpreting that as no raises.

We went over this story before months ago, the Union was informing us, the difference is im not sure the press was involved..

Perks?

They let you take all the winter vacations you want (of course don't try to get one in the summer to do things with your family until you have 20 years.
They may give you a day off for an important family event IF they can get coverage and IF they are not over on the overtime budget.
They allow you to work as many holidays as you want because you'd rather be doing that than being with your family.
If there is an emergency and you have to stay, they'll see that you have fresh water and new batteries for your flashlight.

Yeah, you have lots of perks

Well, the TWU does the same thing. Except they spend your dues in the media on causes that do not benefit the members. Official TWU presence at the OWS crime camp for example or members marching in TWU Tees in support of stopping the NYPD "Stop and Frisk" law. Get your union to work for you and fuck the political shit.
