Nope, I didn't get fired. I left on my own accord. NO pressure from them. My own pressure from getting abused. I was a baad employee.

Yeah and supposed they arent single?

FWIW, one could make a similar statement about a lot of other jobs in that pay range, and the difference that the income has whether one is single or married or single with children and living with parents, and it's something that I've seen first hand at my employer. Mind you, I'd feel a bit more sympathy for somebody earning $11/hr (like some of my co-workers) around New York versus somebody earning $25.

I'll quickly note that I'm biased as I'm single and unlikely to get married, and the weird hours that sometimes come with transit are a benefit to lonely people who like to sleep late.

Admittedly the hours can be rather hectic, and one doesn't get their choice of prime shifts, and NYCTA's labour relations seems downright awful from what employees have hinted at online, but again, at the wages that train operators and conductors earn, there's just simply far less sympathy even if they have a wife and two children when compared to an equivalent family earning much lower wages.

as for that other silly comment I can say yer dead wrong on that..

Oh come on, who wouldn't love to work from mid-afternoons into the evening hours or early morning? I worked the 4PM to 12 AM shift at my employer when they I was asked to train some new employees, and it was great given that I could wake up late, and at the time that I returned home, it was still dark outside making falling asleep relatively easy. :-)

Oh certainly not, but certain fields of employment have their perks due to their shifts for certain kinds of people. I'm not saying that everybody who works late shifts are lonely single people, but hell, if you're a loner, then being a train operator isn't a half-bad position. Hell, it's even better at the OPTO systems where you get a full cab and no conductor to work with...

Thank you. :-)

To be honest, the answer is no but with some skillful tax credits and deductions along with some years of savings, it's possible after in the future* for some people. Mind you, not every new C/R is supporting a wife and child(ren). Some have a spouse that works, others don't have children, and others still live at home with their parents.

*Of course, one could simply go to Europe alone leaving the wife and/or children behind, something that I've seen in some relationships.

What do people who make $30-40 an hour, who ride to work for free, want to tell to people who earn minimum wage who pay $4.50 a day about getting a raise?

The difference in salary is due to the different complexities and responsibilities with the jobs. Pushing a broom, asking "Do you want fries with that?" or answering phones ( all honest work in their own right) can NOT compare to the professionalism commensurate with operating a bus in passenger service or rolling a train over the road.
When the MTA cries 'empty pockets' at each and every contract, only to show a surplus even before the ink is dry, leads MANY union brothers and sisters (and apparently TWU Presidents, too) to NOT believe that MTA has no money stashed away for a much better offer that 0's across the board.
When YOUR kid is on MY bus, I am sure you want a highly qualified (CDL and NY State 19A laws) PROFESSIONAL Operator that is compensated fairly for the enormous endeavor that is a simple trip on a crosstown bus.
Remember: you get what you pay for .......... Unless you are talking about management in the MTA, but that's for another post.....

Exactly. I'm sick and tired of the argument "Well, if the folks who ride your trains and buses make less than you guys (transit workers) you should make the same.

Do they say the same thing about their doctors or other professionally people who serve them?

It takes a long time to train an train operator for example. And he is always learnign new things. He is responsible for a lot of lives and the safety of a lot of folks are in his hands. Every passenger is a potential law suit for NYCT. He has to know about the mechanics of a train, third rail, track, signals, so much other stuff. He does not work 9-5 with weekends and holidays off.

Bus operators have the responsibility of a large, half a million dollar vehicle and a load of passengers as well and have to deal with traffic, traffic and traffic. Surly customers too.

And what do I hear time after time? Nobody is forcing you to take the job? I guess we're slaves.

This is why I usually take a hiatus when the talk of contract comes up around here. As long as YOU make money, f** the transit worker.

How were they supposed to live in the meantime?
Unemployment probably helped for 6 months.

You've kindof missed my point though... in the private sector laid off people don't get that first priority for re-hire. They also do not need to take seniority into account for layoffs. I know someone who was laid off and did not get re-hired (after 20 years of service to a private company). I think that leaves a worse taste in your mouth, no?

With exception to wages, working in private industry is generally worse than public employment. That is the trade off that has been present for as long as I can remember. So yes, asking for every employee to get a raise after getting continuous raises during a recession is too much. This money does not grow on trees, it will come in the form of fare hikes, tax hikes or service cuts, none of which is very helpful in restoring economic activity (though it would be nice if it could be entirely covered by reducing O/T opportunities). Much of the public sector in NYS is already in the middle of a 3 year wage freeze, same for federal employees.

While "everyone else is getting screwed over, so should you" isn't much of an argument, it is what makes TWU appear greedy to outsiders. The cost of living did not increase by 10% over the past 3 years (while CPI isn't the best measure it's the easiest one to find at the moment), so consider that raise as an "advance" on the next 3 years of costs of living.

With exception to wages, working in private industry is generally worse than public employment.

I know many many many people who have had substantial experience in both sections and would disagree with that.

The cost of living did not increase by 10% over the past 3 years

It is a little more complicated than that. NYC uses pattern bargaining, which means that the playbook of negotiations, if you will, is based heavily on how things have planned out with other workers. That means that when the TWU and MTA sit down to negotiate a contract they are going to look at the last contracts from 1199, DC37, UFT, etc. and in all likelyhood negotiate a tradeoff between money and work rule changes so that the raises TWU workers get will mirror the raises that other city workers got in the round of contracts.

Sound strange, I know.

And the truth is that this can work out well or poorly for workers depending on the circumstances. In the last contract, the TWU did quite well despite a pitiful economy because the economy was doing well when the first unions in that round of negotiations settled their contracts.

At that same time, there have been many occasions where union workers get far less of a raise than the cost of living increases. Why? Because the economy was doing poorly when the first unions in that round settled their contracts. Thus, when the economy was booming in the 90s and lots of private section workers were getting raises, lots of city unions were taking 0's because that was the pattern.

(Of course, to extrapolate, it is unlikely in this round of bargaining that TWU will do well, as other unions have suffered... and in the end it probably won't make any difference how much extra money the MTA has, just what other unions have negotiated.)

Many unionized private sector employees are laid off by seniority and rehired by seniority but in many industries they have to go through several layoff and rehiring "cycles" before they have any real job security.
