You can't extend the 4 Av Line along Fifth Av since 5 Av ends at 95 St. The line, however can be extended down FOURTH Av. The problem is not so much with storage as it is with maintenance and it's doubtful that an efficient maintenance facility could be built in the underground area as you describe it. As I mentioned in other posts, getting an R train from 95 St to CIY for either repairs or inspection requires a revers move on the N/B exp track at 36 St which often interferes with the express service N/O 36 St. Having the car mtce for the R fleet done at Jamaica Yd allows trains to be taken directly off the road at Ctl and sent right into the yard without having to interfere with the mainline.

Actually, 4th Avenue Joins 5th Avenue at 95th Street, and 5th Avenue continues to the water. LION builds a six track 2000' stub which will hold 18 trains. Daily Inspections and cleaning can be done there, and units for weekly inspections can go OSS at 9th Avenue and then bingo to CI.

Had they built a 2nd Avenue subway in the 1950's, the car that would have been in mass production for it would have been the R16.
Be careful what you wish for.

The TA (or B of T) tried Budd with the R11, then got cheap with ACF and st Louis.

Went back to Budd for the R32, then got cheap again, and bought St Loui's rust-buckets, 1,352 of them for the "B" Divsion. All but 113 are gone. 230 R32's still exist.

I live in Bay Ridge and FOURTH Av is what continues to the water and Fifth Av stops at 95 St. It doesn't make sense because Fourth Av actually bears slightly to the right at that point and follows the path of Fifth Av.

Good point, however don't just blame the car contract. Depending on when GE mad the switch from air cooled resistors to blower cooled resistors which were found on all GE contracts from the R-16 through 22 either an earlier R-16 would not have had the "improved" resistor cooling system or a later R-11 type might have suffered from the problem. If the B of T had let an earlier R-16 contract, it may very well have looked like a 60 ft X 10 Ft R-15.

You talking by Wilson Avenue? I'll have a look if I can leave early for work today. I'm surprised more scrapyards are taking old railcars with asbestos anymore unless scrap prices are really through the roof. Naporano gave up on them in the 90s.

I've heard an R-46 sound C-Ab. Nothing like standing on a platform and hearing door chimes a minor second off from the rest of the train. Makes me want run my tongue along my fillings to make sure they're still there.

Still, those PA-1 through -3s were the last to have the "air brake sound" that the R-38 through 42's had when new.

All:

After a lot of digging around, it was discovered that through July 31, 2012 some 60 ("6-0") R-44's have been removed from NYCT property.

Have car numbers but not the corresponding dates as yet. Still working on it.

One "A-B" set is stationed at Coney Island as a "Derailment Training Unit." This is 5244-5245. Perhaps they will survive.

A general question:

As we write these dispositions up for the "Bulletin" in the coming months, is there a preference for both OLD AND NEW numbers or is that too much clutter?

Thanks again to whomever got that random shot of 5417 way back and "Caz from Jersey"!

Regards,

George Chiasson Jr.

If you are going to list both R-44 road car numbers in the disposition stage, I would suggest to have it as first the NEW and OLD in that order, like as an example #5264 (ex-100).

George: I believe that they did publish a list of the R-44 renumbering in the April 1993 issue of The Bulletin. If you are planning to do a post mortem on the fleet it would be nice to have both sets of numbers. Thank you again for all the great information that you have provided over the years.

I had never heard of any NYAB test trains. There was however in addition to the Abex Hydraulic train, a test train with Westcode brakes which may have been the reason why the 46s had Westcode brakes as delivered. Also, just prior to GOH circa 1983, there was a test train with WABCO RT-2 brakes with Cineston controllers. I never saw that train in service but when I was a trainmaster in early 1984, I saw it laid up out of service in 207 St Yd.
